Good food at the right price  4 Star Rating - Very good

By Samantha R.

I recently went here as part of a large group, and the staff was accommodating and friendly. There was a lot to choose from on the menu, all of it reasonably priced. And despite the large number of people in our party, the food was served promptly. The food was very good, and you receive huge portions. I'd definitely go back!

Not as good as I remembered  3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

By D. L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,795

I ate here recently, after not eating here for about 9 years, and found some of what I ate here to very good and some of it to be mediocre; it wasn't as good as I remembered it to be. The Johnny cakes that are served are very good; they look like pancakes but taste similar to a really good cornbread. The fried green tomatoes were steaming hot and good. I ordered the oyster po'boy, which comes with cole slaw and a side, such as greens and mashed sweet potatoes. The oysters on the po'boy were small but quite flavorful. I ate the oysters with the red pepper dip, a creamy dip that comes with the oyster appetizer; it was much better than the remoulade (which basically tasted like mayonnaise) that comes with the po'boy. Despite the nice flavor of the oysters, overall, I found the po'boy to be mediocre and next time I'll order something else. The coleslaw that came with my order was in a sort of vinegar based sauce or something instead of a cream-style dressing; it had practically no flavor. I ordered the side of greens, which were very good. I'd go back--next time I'll order the fried catfish--but I'm not anxious to.

New Orleans Living in the Middle of Chicago  4 Star Rating - Very good

Located in the diverse Hyde Park neighborhood, Dixie Kitchen offers a wonderful southern cuisine in a laid back setting. With everything from blackened catfish to hotwater cornbread, this small eatery is customer friendly, reasonably priced and sure to bring a taste of Louisiana to your neck of the woods.

PROS: Wonderful food, good service, warm environment
CONS: The only fish is catfish and many of the sides are cooked in pork
