This is an amazing bookstore. It has huge travel sections, childrens, literature and sale sections (great- deals here) but what I love best is that the staff, a group of devoted readers, writes reviews of their favorite books, which makes hunting and picking out a book much easier. The staff oviously love books, so they can point out that perfect book (they also are dog friendly and always give my dog a biscuit).
This is, in my opinion, the best independent bookstore in Chicago, if not in the entire mid-west. It is great fun to wander through and find that really special book that you would not find in other places and then sit in one of the neat lakeview cafes and read the afternoon away.

Otherwise, this is a very cool bookstore. All new booksnot used or remaindered. They have an excellent selection of literature and non-fiction books and an extensive collection of gay-themed literature. The background music is very good (for instance, the incredible Emmylou Harris) and you can browse at your leisure without anyone bothering you. Their selection of science fiction and horror books is limited, however, and they really do need to add some chairs.

PROS: Laidback atmosphere, good background music.
CONS: No chairs.

If you live in Wrigleyville/Lakeview and believe in supporting locally owned businesses, then you can't afford to miss Unabridged Books. This longtime Lakeview business has a terrific selection of fiction and non-fiction books (including a sizable gay and lesbian selection). Unabridged Books has a great reputation in the literary community, and well-known authors frequently make it a stop on their book tours for readings and signings. I particularly appreciate the handwritten notecards taped to the shelves adjacent to many books, describing books that a particular staff member recommends. Don't be deceived by the relatively small storefront appearance -- the selection also extends into the basement.

This place has shelves and shelves of books -- all really hastily organized. The books are a bit cluttered, but there's some really great books to be found among the clutter. Take a look and you'll be bound to find some really great books for reading!

OK, so its not exactly an impressive looking bookstore, but where Unabridged misses on style, they make up for in substance. There is a great deal of quality, reasonably priced literature on their shelves.

Sometimes the organization is a bit lacking, but if you don't enjoy spending a few extra minutes browsing, you will almost always be pleasantly surprised with something you find here.

Try patronizing this local joint in the heart of boystown. Stop by to find the latest non-fiction or buy a new copy of their large selection of magazines. Their specialties seem to be beautiful photography books and gay themed literature.

PROS: Not Borders
CONS: No coupons

Hole in the wall bookstores are the reason why shopping for books is fun. Forget the cheesy house cafes and poorly selected music playing over the intercom. Unabridged books is just one of those places you have to go and support. With their excellent selection of all the newest releases, classics, and plenty of gay culture--it is a must go to for any Northside visitor. The staff is helpful, the books are everywhere and they are always willing to order any out-of-stock copies. There is no cafe in this book store, but the extra room for the hard to find copies of your must have book make up for that.

PROS: Selection, friendliness, Independently owned
CONS: The atmosphere could use a little sprucing up

This is one of those increasingly rare shops in the era of Borders and BN. Unabridged is a great independent store. Since it's in boystown, it has a large collection of lesbigay literature, but a wide variety of other books as well. There is a good travel section, and I've bought a number of cook books. This is not a coffee house book store, and not a carry-all store like the mega-Borders, but it's a great place to browse and find great treasures that would get lost at the bigger stores.

This is a fantastic local bookstore. The staff offer many of their own candid and honest book reviews, there is a huge selection, there's a lovely atmosphere and its in a great neighborhood. I would recommend this place to anybody. Its in a good shopping spot that doesn't get as crowded as downtown and includes some lovely stores.

Love this bookstore. It's got a nice mom-and-pop feel to it, with the best selection of gay and lesbian books in the 'hood. And what a sale rack! You can find great hardbacks for five bucks. Can't beat it. Open late, too.
