Great homey place

by Christopher M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,869

A great local establishment, a real hometown brew of a bookstore that carrys plenty of selection with decent pricing, not enough to compete with the big boys though. You can always find plenty of affluent types at this store as it a see and be seen sort of establishment. I have always enjoyed the great friendly atmosphere and their huge rare book collection which is the best ive seen in the midwest. You can get gift certificates, the accept all credit cards, and are open fairly late on weekend nights.

Excellent little store

by Margaret C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,690

I come here to get lost in books. You can go in and browse books, and the sales people will not bother you. Unlike chain stores, they don't seem to mind if you borrow the books for a few minutes. They are open late, which is a really convience. Parking is horrible though, you can never find anywhere to park.

Good selection!

by Phil L. | insider Insider | Rank: 22,101

Barbara's has a great selection of books, many that you will not find in the other chain bookstores. They have a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and lifestyle books. I found a great book by Dick Marooney I could not find elsewhere.

great neighborhood store

by Courtney B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,382

This store has alot of events and fun activities in general. They have a selective group of books, but are always willing to order. In addition, they have a good periodicals section wtih journals like Granta and McSweeney. This is a great place to support with a very friendly staff and they are open until 10 pm.

Super Book Store for Book Browsers

by Calissa H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,762

If you're looking for a place without pushy sales people, people who don't mind if you just sit and browse for a while, you should visit Barbaras Bookstore. Parking may be packed, but Barbara's more cozy than a B&N any day.

PROS: Better To Browse
CONS: Good luck finding parking!

Better than the big chains

by Rob G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,037

I like stopping in at Barbara's every once in a while as a change of pace from the bookstore giants like B&N and Borders. Barbara's also features local authors a lot, so that's cool too. One bad thing is that parking can be a pain if the lots are full, like on weekends.
