Featured Room & Board Products

We are influenced by the great design movements of the past, particularly Shaker, Arts and Crafts, Bauhaus, Scandinavian and Mid-century Modern. These movements share principles that we consider fundamental to good design, like honoring natural materials, working with simple, organic forms and making the functional beautiful. To us, modern means taking the best of the past and reinterpreting it for life today.

Great furniture store in Near North Side neighborhood of downtown Chicago. The sales associates are attentive and friendly. Modern and well-made pieces of furniture.

I have bought the majority of my furniture from Room and Board. I am surprised about the negative reviews. To be honest, the employees do not work on commission and they are extremely helpful and friendly whenever you walk into their store. I love my couch. It is the most comfortable couch I have ever owned. I also own a bed and a dresser and they are both great quality.

They accidentally delivered the wrong dresser but immediately rectified the problem and I was very impressed with the delivery drivers as well.

    Thanks R&B!

    Pros: Great quality

Cons: A bit expensive but worth the price. You get what you pay for!

Room & Board is extremely inflexible on their shipping dates. You have little say when your furniture will be delivered to you. They ship their furniture from their Minneapolis warehouse - they don't have regional distribution centers - and only use their own drivers. They claim this is because their drivers "know" how to assemble their furniture. However this means they call you and TELL you what day your delivery is - you have NO say as to when you receive your furniture. If you can't receive the furniture the day they tell you, the driver just takes the furniture back to Minnesota and you have to wait another week, only to be given yet another delivery date, which may or may not be convenient to you. Despite their "Service Guarantee" they do little to try and work with you. If you want anything from them, you better hope it can be delivered via UPS. Better yet, go with Crate and Barrel or DWR

Pros: Nice selection of modern furniture

Cons: Poor shipping and customer service

I went in there having done tons of research and ready to buy my sofa. All i wanted was a sample of the fabric to bring home. I asked very nicely if i could have something just a little bigger than the regular sample size, so i could really get a feel for the color. All he had to do was offer me a couple of the samples, i even would have brought them back if he really wanted. Instead, the salesman got super snotty, informing me that this was very expensive fabric and if they were to give out "sheets of fabric" to every customer it would be almost "$50 a customer!" I stared at him as if he was crazy and said that i didn't want a "sheet" of fabric, just something slightly bigger so i could really make sure. It was a very expensive couch and II was already set on buying the couch. He refused. So i left. I really don't understand people.

Also, I'd like to say this was an isolated incident. Unfortuneately, another time i was in there (when i first saw my couch) i overheard an argument a customer was having with another surly salesperson. the salesperson was blaming the customer for the damaged (and incorrect!) product she received. I am no longer buying my couch from there and i'd recommend everyone who goes in there be prepared for very bad customer service.

    Pros: nice stuff

Cons: bad, bad, bad customer service. Not worth it. Who wants to fight when you're paying thousands of dollars?

i've bought many pieces from here in the past. avoid the custom made pieces - i've had horrible luck with them. the rest of the furniture is average quality. this place can be completely hit or miss. the same can be said of the customer service - it depends on who you talk to once you're there. pricing is okay for what you get. you'd be better off going to a sample sale at the mart or a real showroom - you'd pay the same or more, but the quality is so much better. i still don't see why people think so highly of this place...

Order as much as you want and, in the City, it's $50 to deliver everything. Great stuff, comfortable, beats the heck out of Crate & Barrel. Great optional fabrics. Check out Retrospect downstairs for more traditional items.
