They're a bit pricy, but their food is good. I've gotten a bagel there twice and have not been disappointed. Their veggie cream cheese is amazing. I wouldn't go very often because of the price, but its worth it for a once and awhile thing.

Hey Guys-\nI've been going there for years --the FREE parking is huge in this neighborhood!--If they did not control it the abusers would be using my (& other real customers) space. Whenever I have asked the management if I could make another short stop after eating --they said OK no problem as long as I had dined first.\nGreat food and a loong history in Chicago make this a favorite. Just use common sense and appreciate the parkling lot freebie.

I am very pleased to have a Jewish deli in my neighborhood, but please folks, improve the food and I'll be there all the time! \r\n\r\nMy main complaint is whitefish salad, way way too much mayonnaise. The whitefish should be in chunks, lightly covered with mayo, so you can actually taste the fish. Anywhere else in Chicago to get it without making it myself? \r\n\r\nMeat filled blintzes are good, not great. The filling is a bit too dry. Add some broth to the filling when you make it!\r\n\r\nThe apple strudel is wonderful -- lots of apple, great texture, a keeper!!!\r\n

Pros: apple strudel, decor feels just right

Cons: some items not good (whitefish salad), service either not attentive, or bugging you with ""are you done"" questions

When visiting Chicago from San Diego, I was lucky enough to have my friend, and business colleague, William, take me to his favorite deli.\r\n\r\nI ordered the Salmon Salad Sandwich and asked the best bread to eat it on. The owner suggested Halla bread. I was so pleasantly surprised - this was the most amazing sandwich that I've ever eaten. There was not a lot of ""filling"" or mayo, mostly fresh salmon, and it was such an experience. I even told the manager that he had to open a shop in San Diego, to which he replied, "" I can send you the Salmon Salad on dry ice.""!! OMG. \r\n\r\nThey are friendly, family oriented and the food kept me going back for the three weeks I was there. The best food ever from a deli.

Pros: Only good things to say. It's a very casual dining experience with everyone very friendly.

Cons: None except that I live in San Diego!

i am sure some people may be fooled but this southern boy was not. I was convinced to order the southern fried chicken after listening to the manager go on and on about the best ever southern fried chicken fresh never frozen and just finished cooking. Upon arrival the 1/2 chicken looked good, in fact there was nothing wrong with the chicken, except it was not fried . the skin was not even crisp. i would dare to say this chicen was made with shake and bake, maybe the southern style. a huge disappointment and false advertisement. next time i will ask him a question or two such as ,what type of oil is the chicken fried in? is there a cast iron skillet involved? what makes this chicken southern? hmm. i wonder.

Pros: 1000 island dressing

A favorite spot when I'm in the area, The Bagel serves up delicious soups and sandwiches. While I'll usually get any of their deli sandwiches and some matzo ball soup, the server recommended that I try the kreplach soup to compliment my patty melt. Outstanding! Bring an appetite as you definitely get fed - pickles and bread come free. Yum!

Pros: Soups, Sandwiches, Service, Ambience

I like the food at the Bagel, but year after year the service gets worse. They may or may not bring bread and butter to the table. The ice tea tastes like soap BTW. At least it is clean. They say they deliver but do not always want to. When the do they do not want to bring it to the apartment. They want you to go to the lobby. Delivery to me means to the door. At the restaurant you have to order ""to go"" at the deli not the table. So if after a meal you want to order something extra you have to stand in line. I would rather sit at the table and enjoy the coffee while i am waiting. All in all I do not think it is worth it. There are so many places to go in the Lakeview area. I hope they get it together and maybe I will go back.

We went here on the recommendation of a colleague of mine and were not disappointed. The service was fast and friendly (they even gave us extra bread to take home since we devoured the delicious selection of challah, muesli, and bagel chips that were placed on our table). The kreplach soup was delicious, as was the rueben and skirt steak sandwich. The atmosphere was also great, lots of families and friends. A large place, but it realyl felt homey.\r\nAfter reading the reviews on here, we decided to forgo parking in the lot and found a spot on Broadway (and this was 7 p.m. on Friday). Please don't let the parking reviews deter you from a delicious meal!

This place is an excellent source for corned beef, pastrami, kugel, rugelach, and the like. They have a nice sit-down restaurant as well as a bakery counter where you can buy lots of knishes, pastries, and, of course, bagels. The fish platters aren't a good deal, so I would skip them. The ruebens, however, are well worth it.

PROS: Great food, nice decor
CONS: Often crowded, lousy coffee.

This restaurant is very aggresive about your parking. If you visit nearby Gap or a coffee store after your breakfast (even for a couple of mins), they will boot your car and charge you $100. The service and taste are not worth a risk and a cost.

The bagel has the yummiest chicken soup, matza balls, cabbage soup, challah, and the chopped liver is out of this world!

Everyone knows when you are sick to get matzo ball soup. The Bagel does not start delivery until 4P! That's just not right....even my grammie said so.

This place has fabulous food--I've never had anything I didn't love. The challah french toast is absolutely out of this world. The Bagel is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Chicago.

The Bagel serves up good old fashioned Jewish favorites the way Bobbeh always did . . . pickled herring, matzoh balls as big as your head, sweet and sour meatballs, and fried matzoh. Yum! The servings are enormous and the prices are great.

In a world of foo-foo fusion cuisne, the art of honest, traditional home-style food is lost. Not at The Bagel. Everyone who knows their deli know its the only game in town. Best meats(sliced to order), soups, and old world deli favorites, that will never be found at the fly-by-night fad sandwich shops. Over 50 years and run by the same family, it's a Chicago institution. Have a hot pastrami and a matza ball soup. Fanstastic.

The food is consistently good, especially the soups!\nThe service is always friendly and competent. There may be a wait during peak week-end times, but never too long. I go whenever I get the chance.

The stale bagels are inexpensive. The $100 parking, however, is extremely expensive. I parked my vehicle in the Bagel's parking lot, walked down one block to pick up a City Guide, and then I bought a hard old bagel. I was gone less than 10 minutes, however, my car already had a boot on it. I was told that it was the Bagel's policy to boot any car that violated their strict parking rules. Removing the boot costed me $100. When I explained to the manager that it was unfair to boot a paying customer, he ignored me. I then threw my brick of a bagel on the counter, to which he refunded me a dollar. There is an article about the Bagel's infamous practice on news-journalonline. The Bagel's food is so bad, that they've decided to make their money in the parking lot. Do not go.

The sandwiches at The Bagel should be avoided, unless you are prepared for an awful experience. The rye bread was stale, the corned beef was fatty even though I asked for it lean, and the potato salad had a strange slimy consistency. The fried potatoes weren't an improvement on the salad because they were soggy with oil. I've had better sandwiches at home. I went to The Bagel because it was an editorial pick, but they must have received preferred treatment. What I received was bad food, and even the bagel I took home to my wife was stale. We will never return, because we now know better.

I stopped by The Bagel Restaurant yesterday, hoping for a real New York style bagel. But, what I got was a tooth ache. The bagel seemed like yesterday's news. Hard and stale! The Bagel Restaurant strike's out on bagels, not a good start. So, then I tried one of their ""famous omelettes"". The western omelette fell short of even denny's low standards. Where's the ""fresh"" tomato's? Are they out of season? So to sum it up save your teeth and avoid The Bagel Restaurant. I'm not crazy about Einstein Brothers Bagels, but at least you won't lose a tooth. Real New York style I don't think so!
