When I called the salon a female answered and explained that she would be more than happy to book me, but then proceeded to tell me that she also does hair and charges less than Ajes and has an available appointment that would get me in, prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, and there was no guarantee that Ajes would be available. So I decided to book my appointment with the stylist (on the phone) named Soroya, since I have a big event with press coming up on the 1st of December and also because I would think that a stylist with a celebrity salon would be just as good. It was the worst mistake that I have ever made. I had a 5:00 appointment and arrived at 4:50 and she informed me that she didn't remember making my appointment. I explained to her that I spoke to her on the phone and then she was like oh yes I remember. She told me to wait and I waited until 5:25 and then she came and got me (I was about to leave but decided against it since I had traveled so far). First she didn't take the time to base my hair and scalp appropriately (She only combed my hair out) She didn't place any oil or vaseline around my scalp! While she was applying my touch up (relaxer), I kept telling her that I was feeling burning in certain areas of my scalp. She kept telling me that it was nothing since it was a mild all natural relaxer that she was using and she told me that she will place some oil on those areas. Finally she rinsed the relaxer out and I kept telling her that my scalp was hurting with the touch of the water and felt really bad. Then she applied a rinse to my hair and that was even more painful. Soroya kept reassuring me that the relaxer didn't burn me at all because it was natural. At 8:20 p.m. I told her that I needed to leave the salon because I needed to get home. She finally styled my hair and I left at around 8:35 p.m. It took her 3 hours to do my hair and the salon wasn't even that busy! When I left the salon and woke up the next morning, I had a very red scalp and burned areas in the entire front hair line of my face. I called up Ajes later that day thinking that I would be able to drive down there, but decided that given that it was 11/ 25/09 it would take me 2 to 3 hours to get into the city coming from the far north suburb (by the border of Wisconsin). Ajes told me to apply Neosporin and call him on Saturday after the holiday when the shop reopened. I called him on Saturday and told him that I would stop by so that he could see the damage, because on the phone he informed me that I could just wear bangs. I drove with my 2 year old son into the city. Ajes looked at the scalp which had crusted over in certain spots and still looks horrible! He just looked at it and said it would be fine just put some Neosporin on it. I explained to him that I had never in my life been burnt by someone applying a touch up. I said that this shouldn't happen again. He told me that it wouldn't then went and got Soroya who came out and looked at my scalp and just said you must have sensitive scalp and said I based your scalp. I said to her that I kept telling you that my scalp was burning. She didn't even offer to reimburse me for the Neosporin. If I didn't have a big event coming up, I would have filed a smalls claim court and sued her for the 125.00 that I spent for my hair in which she instead burnt my scalp and then sent me on my way. My advice to everyone who has ethnic hair in Chicago, stay away from going to this salon, as Soroya indicated to me during my appointment she recently became a beautician, so I would advise everyone to go to a salon that cares about its customers and reputation and find a salon and stylist that won't burn your scalp and then send you on your way without even an apology or a refund. My scalp is still in pain. I wish I had read the previous reviews before going to this salon. It was a big mistake!!!!! I

Pros: NONE!!!!!

Cons: Bad Hair stylist

.

I had a consulation at this place and really liked the stylist. However, when I showed up for my appointment, she made me wait for 2 hours. I finally told her that it was late and I needed her to start. She quickly washed my hair and blowdried it bone straight and didn't bother to even curl it. It was so straight and limp that I couldnt wear headbands or hair ties. And I'd gone in for color and a straw set, not flatironing. I wound up going to a different salon two days later to have my hair fixed. Turns out my hair was burnt and sections of it wouldn't revert back to natural. When I complained they offered to just cut it off. How is that a solution for my ruined hair! The most awful hair experience I've ever had. It's going to take months to get my hair back to normal.

Do I HAVE to give a star? I SO agree with anonymous 63. I am a client of one of his "stylists" and EVERYTHNG anonymous 63 says I co-sign on! It has deteriorated over the past few years, and YES there is illegal herbals and powder use going on, "designer" dogs running around, and WAY too much drama for a supposed to be "upscale" salon. AJ charges way too much for what little he provides, and if you don't fit into his superstar mold you get treated like a peasant. PLEASE go somewhere else. Little hair consultation is provided, and his syling is mediocre unless he feels you fit his standard of beauty. I have heard it come out of his mouth. Also- if you are happy to be nappy you won't be able to sit in his chair, I have heard him make comments that he does not "like" doing nappy hair and will give you to another stylist. My dedication to my stylist keeps me going, but trust me, it can be stressful.

Pros: west loop

Cons: everything else

I went to Ajes for the first time on a Thursday night. I found the salon on a site for curly hair. AJ himself was my stylist. For starters he was extremely short with me while I thought it was suppose to be a consult. Then he rushed me off to his assistant whom did nothing but huff and puff the whole time! After sitting under the dryer for over 2 hrs, AJ returned to finish my hair smelling like illegal smoke! (this siite does not allow the real word) Meanwhile his 2 so called designer dogs ran through the salon. To conclude if you are looking for a upscale experience....it won't be at Ajes the Salon. Oh my hair was ok just ok...but for the price and the experience...NEVER AGAIN
