I just moved here from New York City. There are SOOooo many great vegetarian restaurants there. Here in Chicago, the choices are not so good. The fact that there are so very few choices, I think, reflects in the service there. I've gone there many times and felt completely ignored. We'd get seated, and wait...and wait. Most of the food is fairly good. I love the dagwood sandwich, myself, but there's a lot of good food on the menu. Still, make sure you have a lot of time on your hands and a patient disposition or you'll be mad.

The best vegan restaurant in the city. Vegan diners are scarce, so most vegans would be happy enough just to eat here, however, the food is delicious, and exquisitely prepared. The menu is abundant - the staff is friendly. Best chocolate cake.

We just ate there yesterday and our brains began hemorrhaging when we saw how much food we had to choose from! We ended up getting the nachos with black beans, vegan cheeze and veggie chorizo. They were some of the best nachos I've ever had!

My wife got the American sliders (three different burgers) and loved it. I got the Dagwood and OMG!! So amazing.

The only thing that could have been improved was the service. I think our server was the only one serving tables though there was a host and another worker helping out (minimally). And we had two little kids, so waiting a long time isn't allows a good thing. He also forgot to bring us a few things.

Anyways, it was SO worth it. I can't wait to go back. Maybe this weekend for Father's Day!

Cons: Service was kinda slow (1 server)

This place is amazing. Their food is so good. You can get your food just how you like it. No matter if you want veggie, vegan, or what...you will get it. I ordered the all vegetarian and vegan sweet potato quesadilla and it was amazing. Then for dessert we all shared a vegan peanut butter shake and that was amazing. This is a must have place. The prices are great too. Fun atmosphere!

This is a great place to dine for casual vegan/vegetarian food. The have some fantastic organic red wines which go well with any one of their deserts. The evening gets a little busy especially on the weekends and you can expect a 10-15 minute wait for a table but once you sit down it's all worth it. Best vegan cheesecake ever!

I went on a Saturday night for take out. I got the gyro entree and the much talked about green machine salad. The gyro was quite tasty. A lot better than the gyro I had at Soul Vegetarian East. It came with some old and tasteless spanish rice and a pickle ( I know, right ?)The green machine salad however was totally disappointing. From the thick unappealing dairy cheese to the watery vinegar dressing, I definitely should have passed this entree up. I would not have even known it was a cilantro dressing except for the fact it had a green tint. So will I go again? Perhaps. But next time I'll definitely make sure the Halsted Street festival is not going on!

The meal came to about 19 bucks. I recommend any veggie to try this place out at least once.

This place is all about the Vegetarian if you are looking for something different. I am not a Vegetarian but I really enjoyed the food. The potato soup is awesome. The place is cramped but the food makes it worth while. Service was good and prices were OK.

I've eaten at this restaurant so many times, and it never disappoints. The service is usually great, and the menu offers a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan adaptations of favorite comfort foods. The vegan milkshakes (especially the peanut butter-chocolate chip cookie dough, mmm) are simply heavenly, and the mocha-raspberry cheesecake is incredible: pefect texture, great balance of flavors, even nice to look at.

I recommend the brunch options, especially the tempeh-potato hash with biscuits and gravy. The food was so good I ate too much. The plate was huge! I just can't say enough good things about this place, and I would recommend it to any vegetarian or meat-eater.

After reading the reviews I had to try it. I now own the cookbook they sell. Wish I had the cook too!!! Yes, it is a bit small and crowded. I am glad, otherwise I would have to wait too long to get in and do what I want to do most....EAT EVERTHING ON THE MENU!!! If we could have more Chicago Diners everywhere I would be so happy!

During a quick trip through Chicago I stopped here. The food was very good and there was a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options. Unfortunately we had some problems with our food, which I'm sure was a rareity, but the service was great and due to the problem with our meal we recieved a complimentary dessert of raw apple pie which was delicious. I would highly recommend visiting this spot if you're in the mood for healthy vegetarian cuisine and fun atmosphere.

I decided to go to Chicag Diner with some good friends. I've lived in the neighborhood for years, had passed it many times. We ordered the vegetable potstickers as an appetizer and they were great. My friends' entrees arrived and I was told my entree would be right out. I waited - thankful for the potstickers - my friends had finished their meals when mine finally arrived. No overt apologies, no comp of anything on the check, nothing. Not going back.

This place is great. The staff is super nice and friendly. The menu is amazing - they have so many choices and the food is so great that it doesn't even matter if it's vegetarian. Every meat eater I have ever brought there has been converted (at least for the time being). I also love that they know to ask, "soy cheese or milk based cheese" whenever you order something with cheese on it. My suggestion - the "reuben"!!! Or go sit outside on their back veranda with a big margarita on a hot day!

Pros: food, service, food

Cons: i can't even think of one

.

Place is crowded, tables too close, service bad, Bloody Mary disgracefully spiced, they changed it with the worst Mojito I've ever had.
Last but not least: food was really bad, out of 4 people nobody liked it, and we went home feeling bloated.
My wife, who is a pasionate peanut butter cookies eater, left the cookie without eating it.
I really can't understand what to like. I've eaten in thousands of places better than this. Among the worst 40$ spent for food in Chicago.
You bet they won't see us again.

Everything was wonderful, the food was exceptionally delicious. Our server was an absolute delight. He was also very well informed about all of the food. The atmosphere was casual yet fun. This is now one of my new favorite restaurants in Chicago.

Well, great for the non bigoted meat eaters. Fantastic and novel vegan cuisine, and even beers. Desserts tempt from the freezer case like the Sirens to doomed sailors.

The Chicago Diner puts the misconception that vegeterian & vegan food is bland & boring, to rest! Their food is very flavorful & hearty. With their vast menu, even meat eaters will not feel left out, most of them wind up liking dishes they may not have tried otherwise. The Diner is small & can get very busy at times, (I avoid it on weekends when it gets loud & cramped). The downfall is the service. I wish the servers were more attentive, I have often felt ignored waiting to be seated, & for the food can take awhile too. But the food is worth it, & they also have great drinks. I love the blueberry margaritas, which are sweet & refreshing. Aside from the service, the food is delicious & always hits the spot. There is something for everyone to eat there!

It's too bad that most meat eaters aren't open to trying out vegan food. Chicago Diner does it right. I always get the loaded nachoes-soy style and a chocolate soy-milkshake. I leave stuffed and with leftovers. The place isn't very big. In the summer there is a back yard to dine in, but in the winter everyone packs into the tiny front. Once your food comes, you forget that you are eating in a strangers lap.

meat free since '83 is their slogan/motto!

this place is very popular and always bustling with business!
sometimes i feel it is too crowded and, with their popularity, they should look into a different-larger venue, just my opinion, though
the food is fantastic and be sure to pick up a cookbook of your own to recreate some masterpieces!

I ordered the bayou tofish and it was excellent. The prices are very very reasonable and the desserts are delicious. the staff was very friendly and made you seem right at home. it's a little far from downtown though if you are just looking for a quick place to grab lunch. (about 3.5 miles: 15-20 minutes travel time)

Compared to other Vegetarian/Vegan restaurants. Chicago Diner gives you an awesome Homestyle taste. The portions are large for the price you pay. Service is a little slow, but it's worth the wait. I highly recommend the Philly (soy) cheese steak sandwich.

With many vegetarian/vegan resturants leaning towards Asian dishes/resturants -The Chicago Diner is great for classic homemade meals that many vegetarians miss -Due to their usual meat ingredient. Nice atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff and excellent food. I've never had a bad meal there. I strongly recommend their weekly specials -Especially their [almost weekly] various bean skillet specials. Weekends are usually packed but their turnover rate is fast. I've never waited for more than 10-15 mins. Non-vegetarians won't miss the meat.

The best thing from this restaurant is the food; it is simply awesome! The only flaw that my companion and I noticed, was the service; these guys are very young and they seem to have no experience! jajaja!
But don't worry about it! I bet you can handle that. Besides, you go to a restaurant to enjoy the meals, not the service!

I absolutely love the chicago diner. It's my favorite veggie restaurant I have visited so far. The people are great. They offer a cook book and they sell t-shirts. The waiters and waitresses are always great and interesting to talk to. Order a smoothie! I highly recommend Solar Flares and the giant nachos appetizer.

I've been a veggie for over ten years, but the Chicago Diner is just not my type of restaurant. The food is a bit too natural and earthy for my taste, but it might be right up your alley. I've eaten there twice and both times have been very disappointing. But I have to give them credit for dedication to vegetarians...thanks for trying.

Being a vegetarian it is nice to go to a restaurant and have so many options. However, not all of those options are beyond mediocre in taste. A few things, like the portabello mushroom sandwich and the shepherd's pie, are really tasty, but others I've tried are so-so. But most important of all I have had only one experience at the Chicago Diner when the service surpassed "horrible" to "satisfactory". So go a couple of times, don't expect good service, and then you'll be done with the place.

Not only was the food great, especially for the price, but I found the atmosphere at Chicago Diner to be relaxed and hip. With The Onion at the front door, Ben Kweller and Weezer on the soundsystem, and a choice of dairy or soy cheese on my salad, I was wishing I lived right around the corner. Hopefully one day Chicago Diner will be my local hangout. Meat free since 1983, I found all 3 courses of my meal to be light, healthy and refreshing. I recommend the pesto bruchetta and the salad with greens, pecans, oranges, your choice of cheese and citrus vinegarette.

The burgers are grain-burgers and the Reuben sandwich is made with grilled tempeh, onion, zucchini, peppers, sauerkraut and Russian dressing. The chili is chock-full of beans and veggies. That's the way it goes at this casual, laid-back…
