My favorite restaurant of all times. I come here whenever I go to the city. Amazing prime rib. The spinning salad is awesome. Very expensive, but worth it.

A friend suggested we try Lawry's for dinner when visiting Chicago and we were so happy with our decision! The prime rib was fantastic, cut and served tableside. The horseradish was excellent, definite sinus clearer! Our dessert that night was absolutely amazing - a "chocolate box" with a white chocolate mousse and fresh berries. One of the best meals I have ever eaten!

Lawry's steakhouse is the place to go if you love prime rib... The menu offers different cuts, but their name says it all. Their wine selection is good.

On 3/30/11 we went to Lawry's for dinner and a close to our four day trip to Chicago for my daughter's birthday. The evening started well enough with a warm greeting by the host and prompt - courteous service in the lounge.

Our experience in one word ~ bad! \r
Upon arrival, the host seemed annoyed that we were approximately 15 minutes early for our reservation. Comments were exchanged as we were being directed to our table. I thought being a bit early

Best prime rib in the city without a doubt, been going there off and on for years (due to the price). I have no idea how people could give this place a bad review, its simply fantastic.

Go there during Christmas time and you'll never forget it!

Pros: Best prime rib in the city... World?

Cons: Very old-timey feel... Little outdated maybe...

I saw lawry's on the food network and i've wanted to go there for the prime rib for the longest time. i open the menu and you pretty much have no choice but to order the prime rib. we get the California cut knowing it would be the smallest cut but i figured for $34 it can't be that bad (they don't show you or describe what you are getting btw). I get a prime rib as thin as my pinky and mashed potato's that taste like it came from a box. i didn't even get a choice on the salad dressing they just bring you the spinning salad which is just a bowl in a bowl of ice. we were all so upset and eating our dinner feeling ripped off because we know we could have gotten a better steak anywhere else in chicago. in short WASTE OF YOUR TIME AND MONEY GO SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR A REAL STEAK

I've been to a lot of steak places but I have to say never one like this. It's well lit, very elegant, not loud at all, and comfortable. While you might assume that a restaurant located inside a mansion with such elegant decor would have stuffy service it most certainly did not. Our waitress was friendly, out going, playful, but also knew her stuff and did her best to please all of us. Their uniforms are also fun. The spinning bowl salad was not only tasty but fun to watch them make, and while they do put a lot of dressing on it, it still tastes really good. The Prime rib was also wonderful and I love the fact that you have so many choices in size. Four of us went and we all got different sizes and everyone was happy with there's. I have the 5 oz and was impressed not only with the taste but with the fact that they offer such a reasonable size. My husband and I split the mixed mushrooms as a side and were very pleased. The mashed potato's were very good as well. And there signature desert of a chocolate hand bag with cream and berry's was so creative and different. All in all a wonderful experience, we'll definitely be going back.

ME AND MY BEST FRIEND TOOK OUR GIRLS FRIENDS OUT HERE, FOR V-DAY FOR A NICE DINING EXPERIENCE. Well when we got there we waited for a hour and 15 min. I thought the wait was to be expected since i heard it was a good place to eat and it was v-day after all. Let me tell u the place need to go out of business, for the terrible food i had to endour for the prices they have. the entry was the best..lol. the hard breadi ate that i had to put lots, and lots of butter to get it down. The salad was medicore i had better from the ready made salad you get from the grocery store. Then the mashed pudding they serve was like grawl they give prisoner. then the master chef came around with our steak. i just knew this would make up for everything else. Maybe he didnt like me or something but it was fatty steak i ever had no real lean meat. the taste was sorry for a restaurant that called themselves lawry the same people the make seasoning salt. they actually dont put any seasoning on there meat out all. The four of us left the place TICKED OFF. and ended up grabbing sum real food somewhere else to make up for the sorry excuse of a meal they attempt to make.AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST, DONT EVEN WASTE UR TIME,MONEY, OR PATIENT. Listen to the other reviews this place needs a major overall in the kitchen.

We wanted to celebrate our 10th anniversary with great food at a nice place. We absolutely chose the WRONG restaurant. Lawry's was a waste of our time, taste buds, and money. The prime rib was at best, average. The service was just pathetic. It took forever for the master chef to come to our table. Other tables were seated after us, but served and left before us. For a place that has prime rib as their specialty, they definately need help. You would be much better off going to any steakhouse and get the same quality prime rib for a whole lot less AND walk out with a full stomach (and were not big people so it doesn't take much to make us full). I agree with the other post that said the sides are like school cafateria food - plus it is $5 extra! The pre-dinner bread WAS the best part. If you truly want great prime rib, then you need to go to The Captain's Table in Custer, South Dakota. We were there 9 years ago and still remember every succulant bite. But, if you don't want to go that far, then go to Glenwood Oaks in Glenwood, IL. They are a very classy restaurant that has very good prime rib and it's a lot more reasonably priced. Bottom line - DON'T GO TO LAWRY"S! High prices DO NOT mean great food! There has to be a better place in Chicago for prime rib!!!

I lived in Chicago just a few yrs back and have gone to many upscale and pricey steakhouses there. Recently, I was back in Chicago on business and was taken to Lawry's. I'd never been there before, as we have other favorites we always patron. The steaks there were fatty and flavorless. --and the sides were absolutely disgusting. I hate leaving such a bad review of any restaurant. But, there's no way I could give it anything but a "ONE". The food was just gross. The service was nothing exciting. The "ambience" was nothing worth writing about and even worse three people from our party of 8 had "intestinal problems" that night!! Go to Kinzie's Chophouse or Gibsons...or Sullivan's....go anywhere but here.

My wife and I were in the Chicago?s Schaumburg area for four days for a business conference. We had decided to stay over the week end in the Magnificent Mile area to enjoy the ambience of Chicago. We?d tried to get reservations to Harry Caray?s, but found they were totally booked.
I found Lawry?s website and did find an opening for dinner. Great choice!.

We arrived at Lawry?s 20 minutes before our reservation. After identifying ourselves, we were immediately whisked to a table...no waiting at all, even with a crowded saturday evening.
The food [we both had Lawry?s original prime rib] was excellent, as was the service, and atmosphere.

We highly recommend this establishment whenever one is in this area of Chicago.

I was most recently there 6 weeks ago for my freinds birthday. The atmosphere is great, the restaurant is in an old mansion, it has a nice elegant feel. The dinner is like a little show. The server spins the salad, and the carver slices your Prime Rib to order. The creamed spinach and creamed corn are wonderful. I'm usually disappointed when I order Lobster, but theirs is some of the best I've had anywhere. For my friends birthday they came with a piece of cake with a candle and sang. Once in awhile you have to wait a bit past your reservation time, but not too long.

My boyfriend and I recently visited Lawry's for our Valentine's Day dinner. We both felt that the experience was below average. Although, we had reservations, when we arrived, we waited 30 minutes prior to being seated. The ambiance of the restaurant was great, so if that matters to you, more than the quality of the service and the food, you would love it. My boyfriend?s prime rib was extremely tough. He worked up a sweat while attempting to cut it. The best part of the actual meal was desert. We had the key lime cheesecake, we both loved it. This was the first time either of us had been to Lawry?s, which we expressed to our server upon arrival. We were both surprised by his unenthusiastic description of the menu and the restaurant. Prior to visiting Lawry?s, my boyfriend called the restaurant to ensure that my food allergies would be accommodated upon arrival. However, when we arrived they were not, which limited my options on the menu. If we would have known my allergies were not going to be accommodated, we would have selected a different restaurant. Lastly, the valet parking service was the worst we have ever experienced; extremely disorganized and rude. We both felt that the overall experience was one we could have gone without. I do not recommend this restaurant.

Clearly a tourist trap because they can't possibly expect anyone to come back. The meat was fatty and not very tasty. The sides tasted like they were made for a school cafeteria. The waitress was very nice, but in general the service was cheesy. That was particularly unfortunate since they could have fantastic ambiance considering what a beautiful space they are working with. I went to the low end las tablas the night before and had better meat. If you're near mag mile and in the mood for good meat try Capital Grill or Keefers. If you really want prime rib the Chop House does a charred version that is MUCH better. Also had to wait for about 30 minutes despite having a reservation.

It takes a special Yorkshire Pudding to make an Englishman smile, so I was pleased to find that the YP which comes with each dinner at Lawry's is a good one. The dining room is huge and busy, even on a Tuesday, so consider making a reservation. I was on business and alone so it didn't bother me much, but I imagine it's probably better for groups and talking shop than it is for special occasions, especially romantic ones. The Famous Spinning Bowl Salad was decent. The beef was flavorful and uncannily tender, but the potatoes and gravy were humdrum, while the $6.50 asparagus was slightly woody and close to the end of its time. I'd still recommend it though, as a good alternative for people who enjoy beef but balk at the eye-watering prices at the usual Chicago steakhouse.

Cons: very close to being too expensive

Loved the atmosphere and food. We went for lunch which was super inexpensive @15 a person including drink. We went back for a busiess dinner and it was great. The atmosphere is somewhere between romantic and an old mens club. There was 12 of us and we had a reservation so we were seated within 10 minutes. Just enough time for a quick cocktail. One note, when you go to an upscale restaraunt - pay for a babysitter. We kept our conversation down low but were not amused to have to hear a baby crying. Well mannered, trained children are fine. Babies don't eat prime rib and as the person who shelled out literally hundreds of dollars for the meal... I did not want to hear crying. Children belong at Dennys and Chuckie Cheese's not Lawry's.
I recommend a baked potato, creamed spinach and that you skip dessert altogether... you will be too full. For the small eaters... food is ala cart and the servings are more than enough for 2. We ordered prime rib, no bone, and shared a potato, salad, and peas. We walked it off and managed to split a cheesecake at the cheesecake factory later. Chicago downtown - mag mile is very nice in the summer.

I have eaten all over the world and Lawry's The Prime Rib has the best prime rib.

First of all, there is valet parking and a coat check room. The bar very is nice and the waiting area is huge and very comfortable. I always get the prime rib. Sometimes I'll add the lobster tales, but usually I'll have the Traditional cut of prime rib. They have a lovely salad with sherry french dressing which is a house dressing. You have a choice of mashed potatoes or a baked potato which is ala carte. There are a few vegetables to chose from. I like the creamed spinach. Yorkshire pudding is also served with dinner which is customary with prime rib. English trifle is wonderful for dessert, but I usually get the banana coconut cream pie. I always end up carrying my dessert home, because I am so full.

We celebrated my mother's 80th birthday here and there were nine people for dinner. My niece was here from Atlanta and she had just had a baby six months prior. My father had passed away three months before this and my parents were married 59 years. During dinner my nieces baby was a bit fretful. We didn't know it at the time, but she had an ear infection. My niece took her out of the dining room several times to try and quiet her and she couldn't even eat her dinner. Well, the waitress came over and told us to take the baby out and that other people had paid "good money" to eat dinner here. Didn't we pay good money, too? I was appalled! The baby was not that loud. We all wrote to the President and explained everything. The Lawry's Corporation apologized and gave us a letter to take to the restaurant that gave us dinner for nine people FREE! Yes they did! We went back Mother's Day and we only had to pay gratuity and tax. We REALLY enjoyed dinner that time.

All in all it's still a wonderful experience and I was just there in Febuary 2006. You won't be disappointed. Have fun!

Cons: May be too pricey for some, not good for kids

My husband & I have been going here for 5 years - every birthday & anniversary. He's been going since he was younger. We have taken our kids here, but it's much better just dining for 2 (or with a group of adults). It's romantic, the food is OUTSTANDING, the portion sizes are plentiful, the service is always OUTSTANDING, you don't have to wait very long to be seated (make sure to call for a reservation). When you do need to wait a few minutes, they have a nice, cozy waiting area, where there are plenty of tables/seats. If you're visiting, definitely eat here. If you live here, definitely plan an evening out here. There's a Garret's popcorn within walking distance too!

When you do need to wait a few minutes, they have a nice, cozy waiting area, where there are plenty of tables/seats. If you're visiting, definitely eat here. If you live here, definitely plan an evening out here. There's a Garret's popcorn within walking distance too!

Pros: Food, service, ambience

Cons: parking??? But they have valet service.

Lawry's is the best place for prime rib and a very relaxed atmosphere, not slow, but nicely paced. The wait staff were friendly and accomodating with any of our questions. We celebrated our anniversary and dessert was complimentary. Everything was done to our tastes from the prime rib to the side dishes to wine and the dessert.

Remember to leave the kids at home, it is not chuck-e-cheese. Many couples enjoying themselves and it is a very romantic place to sit back and enjoy!

I love this place. Everytime I come to Chicago, I eat here. Request the club room if available. Micahel Jordan was signed in this place, so it must be good!

I was taken there for my birthday. I didn't know they had asked the manager not to announce they were going to sing which the waitress mentioned as soon as she walked up to the table. She forgot my drink 2 times and she seemed very rushed whenever she was at our table. I have paid far less and gotten far better service.

I have experienced worst service ever from this restaurant. I have made a reservation and arrived on time. However, I had to wait 40 minutes extra. The manager, who showed very cocky attitude did not seem to understand the definition of reservation. The manager did not seem to understand how the exceptional service is important in restaurant business. If you are looking for some great service, then I highly recommend not go to this one. The service that this restaurant provides is worse than Apple Bee's.

My husband and were in Chicago on vacation during our anniversary so I wanted a nice place to go to. I found Lawry's and made reservations at which time they I asked if it was for a special occasion and I said yes. The whole atmostphere at the restaurant was great and even when checking in we were wished a happy anniversay. All the food was fantastic from the spinning salad to the prime rib to the desserts. We received a complimentary dessert becuase of our anniversary but being a chocolate fan and hearing so much about their chocolate bag I had to try it. I can't even put into words how good that was. I couldn't have asked for a better restaurant and once we move to the area I look forward to being able to make more trips back!

This was a dining experiance fit for royality!! The food was melt in your mouth with every bite! And the service beyond belief, you never needed for anything! Our server was "like having a little English mum" to care for everything to perfection!! Not for little ones, unless they like to still and quite!

I am not usually a fan of any type of steak, but Lawry's convinced me other wise. We lucked out by picking it out of the phonebook, and we couldn't have asked for a better place for prime rib. If you are a fan of meat, this is the place to go. The servings are huge, and the place has an amazing atmosphere.

First off, I can't believe some of the other reviews, especially about service. Maybe I just got lucky on my trip into the lowlit temple to prime rib, because we got a server that couldn't have been beat by anyone. She was constantly in view outside of the few kitchen runs she made, made sure we were taken care of, and made out visit one to remember. And then there was the steak, and the corn I had on the side. Both were the best I've EVER had. Maybe it was just because I got the beef bowl, and ate it all, though.

Lawry's certainly deserves a lot of credit, but people have talked it up to such an extent that it did not live up to those expectations. It is all about Prime Rib, and that is just about it. The ambience exceeded my expectations, but the big cut of Prime Rib did not meet all the hype. However, Salad was excellent. Overall I agree with the 7 rating.

We finally went to Lawrys, wow, Best Prime Rib i ever had and the staff was great. Maureen, our waitress was great. I do not order Prime Rib ussually because it is a hit or miss at most places. It was a HIT. (Lawrys is known for its Prime Rib) order nothing else! Wife does mot eat steak so she had the salmon, also great. Price was really no different than any other down town restaurant .

It's dark and smoky. Quiet and secluded. And then that bright, shiny wait staff (both male and female I've had) shows up and tries to make you eat more than you weigh. I almost always try to eat until my back hurts! I have never had a bad dining experience here. Though I must say if you go to a steak house and don't order steak...what you get is your fault. What more can I say....they have a spinning salad, a tiny flag saying where the potato is from, and they kissed me before they took all my money :)

This restaurant is outstanding -- and a bargain. For less than $30, you get the best prime rib in the world (Lawry Cut), a great salad, and potatoes. The wine list is very good by the glass, and the portions of the wine are very generous. The waitresses are all very gracious. You just can't beat Lawry's. (And the Beef Bowl cut of prime rib is unbelievable.)

This classic house of prime rib has slipped a bit, but we wish for improvements, because when it comes to prime rib no one does it better. And when the aged beef is sliced to order from the cart tableside, so sweet tasting, we forgiveā€¦
