They have been upgrading the cardio machines by adding new ellipticals & replacing the treadmills. They are currently installing personal TV's on 4 out of the 6 treadmills. There is a wide variety of cardio machines to choose from. The free weight section is perfect & easily done by an individual or with a partner. The classes offered are a great variety & they have been adding member incentive programs to get you further integrated into effectively using all areas of the gym. While the gym does have limited space, they've been able to effectively use every possible inch of it without it feeling crowded or cluttered. The trainers fees are very reasonable & worth it. If you need a little extra motivation, they'll be sure to help push you to give it your all. If you can push yourself hard, they'll help you push even harder. The women?s locker room is good sized and always stocked with hair & body needs. If you like a steam after a workout, there is a sauna available. Before or after work, the gym is not very busy & you'll normally be able to get any machine that you wish to use. Lunch time is a little busier, so be sure to have the mind set that you may not get the machine that you want, but you'll at least get a machine. The It's also an added bonus that the assessments & body fat testing are available. The staff is very friendly and always there to help; all you need to do is let them know what you?re thinking or need help with. I like a no no-nonsense gym where I can get in and get out, with very little chit chat in between. But the staff and members are very friendly, so the atmosphere is far from antisocial but still allowing you to zone out & focus on your workout.

Cons: lunch time is busy

A few months ago, I joined the club and signed a contract (of which I received no copy). I did not receive a tour or any explanation about the club (I wasn't even given a code to the locker room and had to hunt someone down when I wanted to enter). I joined primarily for the yoga/pilates classes during lunchtime and to run after work and the only reason why I joined without requiring a tour is because of the information I read about they gym on their web-site:

"Walk into any LifeStart Center and you'll find only the top name, latest, most popular and effective workout equipment and machines."

"While each LifeStart Fitness Center has its own personality, our "only the best" standard is maintained across the board, at every location."

"Whether it's state-of-the-art fitness equipment...this club has it all." (regarding the 77 W. Wacker location)

First of all, the treadmills at this location are simply archaic. Never mind the fact that there are not personal TV's or fans, but they are by no means "latest", "most popular" or "...the best". They are hands-down absolutely terrible. There is no space for a water bottle, iPod, etc., unless you are lucky enough to get one of the two "newer" models, which could hardly be called that. I never got the chance.

Second, the locker rooms are not clean, the towels are threadbear, the yoga/pilates equipment was dirty & old (there are no pilates mats at all), and the staff is never around.

The third issue I had was with the classes. Beginning on February 5th, almost every class that I joined to take at lunchtime is now longer, which is great if you aren't trying to take them during a lunch hour.

Basically, all of the reasons why I joined were either untrue or eliminated. I entered this gym a total of four times before being completely fed up and I have not returned since.

I joined Equinox. Worth the extra few bucks a month.
