Mgmt needs to intervene and supervise the behavior of the trainers especially during the late afternoon and evening hours. The trainers behave like adolescent punks with impunity toward clients. I am tired of observing it and over hearing it.

Pros: great equipment

Cons: trainers

last yr i decide to use a trainer at EAC. a psyd was my trainer. it was the goofiest experience i ever had learning any thing. he was inattentive, constantly distracted and jittery. the topics he spoke of like drumming and hypnosis were odd and not related to my athletic goals. it seemed like he was trying to enlist me as a client elsewhere. it was plain weird. once in his distracted speaking i had to ask him if he was feeling alright. that question brought him back to my goals. i will never pay that amt of money again unless i get acclimated to a trainer first.

Pros: good equipment

i had the oddest training sessions at EAC. there was some kind of disconnection. i could not get the trainer to listen to me. he kept going off on his job as a psychologist and hypnotist. he was encouraging me to go to downtown sessions. instead of feeling better i felt like there was something wrong with me. i expected a dialogue between myself and the trainer about my goals and how i wanted to achieve them. instead i felt like he was scrambling all over the gym without regard to my goals. it was really odd. the equipment is good and the rates are good.

I was a member here for several months when I moved to the South Loop. I went into the club during my lunch break and asked them to put my account on hold, I was told that this was fine and it would be done. 7 months later I find that they are still charging my account and refuse to refund any of my money even though they have on record that I had not been in the gym for 8 months and that I had in fact come in to request this. I was told that this was my own fault more specifically the person I spoke with said ""You have an excuse for everything"" and ""Its your own fault for not catching this sooner."" While I will agree that I should have caught this sooner as it is my financial record, the fact that they did not close my account is there fault. I explained to them that I had lost my job due to the economy and I needed the money for my rent to which they responded with ""Tough"". Well EAC THANKS

-soon to be evicted from his apartment

Join this club, if you are very sure about your future. What I mean is...these people lock you in contract for 1 year..and if u cancel your contract u have to pay all the balance for the remaining year. They say that you can transfer the contract to another person..Put practically it's impossible..\r
If it is good athletic club and if they are really confident about themselves, why lock the person...Doesn't it sound fishy..They create more trouble than T-mobile or AT&T when you try to cancel the contract...\r
My suggestion is there are many health clubs in Evanston Neighborhood...try all of them...and if there is no other option join here....why take chances and pay huge money or ..paying to collection agency....(yes they easily refer to collection agency)

a.This is a great locally owned gym that has a good mix of machines, a nice pool, and some good classes. I admit that I didn?t find THE class for me at EAC, but they did have a good selection of classes. The one big downside for me was the lack of parking ? you had to find metered street parking or park in the garage 1.5 blocks away. Having to pay to park when I was paying to go to the club just rubbed me the wrong way.

This gym is great for those who like an independent workout (lots of weight and cardio equipment), and those who like classes (almost all of which are included in dues, the exceptions include tennis lessons and rock climbing courses). The only downside? The steakhouse next door! When you get out of a cardio class in the evening, all you smell is roasting meat.

Evanston Athletic Club isn't cheap, but considering what you get, it's a great value. Great location in downtown Evanston, roomy facilities considering the cost of real estate here.

EAC offers numerous free classes to members, including rock-climbing (they have their own climbing wall and offer free open-climb sessions) and the usual pilates, yoga, martial arts, etc. They also offer more advanced and one-on-one classes, which are not free, but the free offerings are great considering most gyms charge for all classes.

The gym facilities are great - clean, new equipment, many workout machines and free weights. It's even aesthetically pleasing - high ceilings, exposed brick.

In the upstairs cardio room, half the cardio machines have their own LCD tv screens! That alone makes it worth the membership - catch up on TV while at the gym :)

The staff is great, free towels, nice locker room which is always clean, and a relatively quiet environment so you can focus on your workout.

Overall if you're serious about going to the gym regularly, EAC is a great choice that offers remarkable value.

PROS: great facilities, lots of equipment
CONS: pricey, but worth it

Nice, little health club, in downtown Evanston. They have great swimming classes for moms and babies (They do have a very nice pool). Very nice child care. It is overall a nice club and it is larger inside than it seems to be when seen from outside. Clean. A nice experience.

PROS: nice
CONS: a litlle on the pricey side

Evanston Athletic Club is a great place to workout or attend various classes. It is very clean and nice and offers lots of oppurtunities for people with different tastes. For a flat fee you can choose among many many different types of classes. I went there for Yoga and group classes and was very happy with the facilities and the instructors. They have good specials for students also. Worth a try if you live in the neighborhood.

EAC is a cut above all the chain health clubs. The staff is friendly and helpful, the club is super clean and well-stocked with towels, lotion etc. There are always plenty of lockers and hair dryers to use.

The equipment is kept up-to-date and in working order. They have TVs attached to all the cardio equipment, which is a nice distraction while you are working out. There are plenty of classes at all times a day too. EAC is worth paying more for.

If you are a casual gym goer, I would definitely suggest the EAC. Aside from the excellent location, the gym itself is superbly clean. The equipment is in great shape and there is also a whole array of workout machines ranging from treadmills to stairmasters and weights. The locker rooms are clean and neat. Another great plus is that they have a climbing wall and basketball court. Both of these are excellent for kids parties. The staff tend to be somewhat friendly. Sometimes you will get the odd person who is a little snooty but overall a great place to work out at. You need to watch your workout time carefully because finding parking can be a real drag and the ticket guys are every ready and willing to hand out tickets to the late gym goer. The membership fee is somewhat reasonable with the drawback being that many times you will have to pay extra for some classes.

PROS: Great range of facilities
CONS: Hard to find parking, Not all classes are free

Evanston Athletic Club offers an alternative to impersonal chain fitness centers, and is a neighborhood gem worth seeking out. While a bit more pricey than some of the larger competitors, they offer many flexible options--you can even buy a 10-workout pass. This club goes above and beyond the usual workout options. Different workout areas are separted by floors and caverenous rooms, giving it a more inviting look and feel than working out in one big gymnaseum-room layout. There is a pool with swimming lessons available, a climbing wall scaling the gym's three stories, state-of-the art equipment and a variety of interesting classes, from hip-hop to ballet to meditation. Cardio equipment has individual monitors for watching television with headphones while you work out without disburbing other guests. Friendly and inviting staff. Day-care and youth programs available, and personal training. Downside is parking, it can be difficult to find a close spot in the club's downtown Evanston location, but a garage is available down the street for just a buck or two.

Editorial from

In Short
No need to be intimidated--this is not a stomping ground for six-packs, but a gym for all body types, rolls and all. The casual, exposed brick space is also bigger than it looks, but its four levels have just about every…
