Be very careful with these people and get second opinions often. They will milk your car for many problems and keep suggesting repairs you either do not need or "fixes" that are not typical.

The main concern with my experience is the fact that their customer service is non-existent when trying to communicate with them over the phone. Read Yelp reviews for a more accurate rating of this shop, they are not as favorable.

If you have a quick repair or need an oil change, you can do worse than this place. If you have major or complicated problems, take your vehicle to a shop with more diagnostic experience.

Business Response:

Hi, This is Martin Fay, the owner of Motor Works. We pay a lot of attention to customer reviews and take critical reviews especially seriously. We (being human) occasionally make mistakes. A thoughtful critical review can show us how to improve our business. Indeed, there have been times when I needed to pick up the phone and personally make amends for our failings. However, at this moment I am perplexed by the review from Rob H in Batavia. Rob H makes no mention of what kind of car he had, nor when the problems occurred. This would be a great help to us. Furthermore, he speaks in vague generalities. What repairs did we suggest that the car did not need? He speaks of a lack of "diagnostic experience". What did we fail to diagnose? I simply do not know how to respond or make amends to someone making such broad unsubstantiated accusations. If we can do better Rob H, please help us. If I might be allowed another minute, I would like to tell Rob H about some of Motor Works' positives: 1) We have been in operation since 1984 and are family owned. 2) Martin Fay has won the NAPA/ASE Chicago Division Technician of the Year Award three times. 3) Mark Huff, our head technician has also won the same award. 4) Motor Works has three Master Certified Technicians on staff. 5) Other shops refer complicated diagnostic work to us. 6) Motor Works is BBB Accredited and rated A+. 7) Motor Works is a NAPA AutoCare Service Center. 8) Motor Works is a member of the Automotive Service Association. This is an organization of top shops gathered to promote ethics, good business practices, and technical advancement. Their magazine AutoInc, rated Motor Works' website one of the top ten best automotive websites in the nation during their 2012 competition. 9) Motor Works is an AAA Approved Auto Repair Facility. There are only two such shops in the immediate 25 mile area. We have a 95% customer satisfaction index rating (CSI) as calculated by AAA yearly testing. The average independent shop has a 74% CSI rating. The average dealership has a 59% CSI rating. To sum up, we are humble and attentive to criticism. We do learn from our mistakes and make amends whenever possible. I remain perplexed, but I hope my discussion above puts things in a better perspective for Rob H and for our public. Thanks Ever So Much For Listening, Martin Fay, President Motor Works

Our family has used the team at Motor Works for several years. Mark has repaired all of our vehicles throughout the years and we have always received exceptional service. Leslie always explains the vehicle problems in complete detail so I have a full understanding of the problem. I trust the whole team at Motor Works and will continue to use them for years to come.

I took my car there for a free oil change with a coupon I received. They told me that my car had a blow water pump and timing belt and it shouldn't be driven home. After putting another 600 miles on it, I myself and a friend opened up the engine ourselves to replace the timing belt and water pump. Both were perfect and we found the oil wasn't even changed, just topped off!!! Truly a horrible experience!!! I wouldn't go there to use a bathroom!

Business Response:

Following is a reprint of an earlier response to Joe A's review: Hi, This is Martin Fay, the owner of Motor Works. Joe A's review deeply saddens me. His understanding of what we found wrong with his car is incomplete. While changing the oil we noted green coolant drips on the timing belt cover. This is a clear sign the water pump is starting to leak. It doesn't mean it's "blown" to use Joe's phrase. It means coolant will eventually get on the timing belt and cause it to fail. It may be weeks before this occurs, but failure will occur. And, when it fails the valves can hit the pistons causing catastrophic engine damage. We did not say it shouldn't be driven home. We said it was dangerous to drive in this condition. Joe's comment about not changing the oil is totally incorrect. If he had looked closer he would have seen a brand new oil filter was instaled on his car. I have attempted to contact Joe, explain what happened and make any amends possible. He has not returned my calls. I would like to tell him Motor Works: 1) Has been a family owned shop providing quality repair since 1984 2) We are an AAA Approved Auto Repair Facility 3) Is BBB rated A+ 4) Has two winners of the NAPA/ASE Chicago Division Technician of the Year Award on staff 5) I used to teach automotive classes at Kiswaukee College 6) The list goes on and on It would be my fondest hope that someday I will get a chance to talk to Joe, correct his misunderstandings and invite him back. That would make my week.

Since moving to DeKalb in 2000, I have utilized the Motorworks family (Leslie, Marty, Darren, Mark, etc.) for all of my automotive needs. I was fortunate enough to choose them first, and have been extremely pleased with the quality of service and attentiveness they have given me. I have heard horror stories of other "reputable" businesses in the area and always recommended Motorworks with confidence. I have had some very difficult and work intensive vehicles, and I have always been pleased with the effort and courtesy they extend to me, especially when I have personal deadlines that need to be met, and having me vehicle back is imperative. Leslie has spent hours on the phone for me and Mark has spent a lifetime "under my hood"... and I appreciate it all.??

My car was dying at stop signs. I took it to four different shops, dealers as well as independents. After many repairs including the fuel pump the car continued to have the problem. Finally I took it to Motor Works. They found a sensor was causing the problem and fixed it promptly.I plan on continuing to bring my car to Motor Works for all my automotive needs. They explain automotive problems well and were very friendly, knowledgeable and professional.
