I have really curly hair and found this place after reading a lot of reviews. I was really pleased with the results and the tips that I got there -- and I like that they practice themselves what they preach!

If you go on a free haircut Monday, ask for Stacia. She cut my hair today and absolutely NAILED IT! she gave me exactly what I asked for only better, I have bangs with long layered hair and she somehow made it mod, wearable, ethereal and cute all at the same time. she also somehow made my stick straight hair wavy with no curling iron... the woman has magic hands. She spent so much time and care on it, I felt like I was in such good hands. I seriously can't stop raving about this girl, she's awesome. Her supervisor, Stevie, kept coming around to check up, and she was also awesome-- so knowledgeable, helpful, and obviously passionate about hairstyling. and to top it all off it was FREE! seriously you must go here. It is gorgeous, friendly, professional, and affordable. LOVED IT!!

Pros: Great location and talented staff

I got the best haircut ever here. I wish I still lived in Chicago. I only went once and then moved. The cut and highlights came out to around $135 but well worth it. The cut made my usually hard to style hair easy and manageable. I loved the type of cut and have tried to explain it to other hairstylists since moving, but nobody ever comes close. I also purchased their styling products.

I went to Sine Qua Non after my sister in law had recommended it. I wanted a long bob. Things started off well, until my stylist started washing my hair. There was no hot water. She made an excuse about the hot water tank being empty at the end of the day. Not a big deal, but things got worse.

Yola started cutting my hair and I noticed how she started cutting my hair very short, much shorter than what I had asked for. While cutting the back of my hair, she opened up my smock to cut near my neck, which left a ton of hair down my back and on my shirt. When she was done cutting, she said her next appointment was here and that the assistant would finish. This is my BIGGEST pet peeve, I HATE when the stylist starts with another customer, leaving her first customer to sort the rest of the hair cut out with an assistant.

The assistant started drying my hair, and was very rough with the brush and she kept grabbing my hair - very unpleasant. Her friend showed up and she yelled to her from across the salon ""I'll be right there, I just have to finish drying this lady's hair."" When she was done, she commented back to the stylist that ""I was all hers"" and abruptly left with her friend.

The stylist left her customer and came back to me. At this point, I looked in the mirror and was not happy with what I saw. My hair was very flat, there was no texture, and it was much shorter than what I wanted. I commented that I wanted more texture, and she said sarcastically, and not in a funny way, ""Oh you don't want a classic bob?"" I said no thanks. She added more texture, and my hair looked ok. I wasn't happy with my bangs, so she cut them some more. The cut was ok.

I would not go back to this salon. I don't care if Yola had a bad day. You should not leave your appointment with hair down your back, with a shorter cut than what you asked for (much much shorter), and most importantly totally annoyed.

Where do I start? I am SOOO pleased with my FIRST Sine Qua Non experience. I recently moved here from Michigan where the same girl had been doing my hair for 20 years so I was VERY nervous about having to find someone I trusted. I was in desperate need of a haircut and color from one that had definitely run it's course, it had been roughly 5 months!!! I read a few reviews, narrowed it down to 5 places, picked up the phone and decided I would go to the first place that could at least get me in for a consultation-today. I gave the receptionist a brief history, explained my apprehension and made one request: a senior or master stylist, and she set up a consultation with Jennifer. I hung up and instantly felt queasy, I was stepping out of my ""comfort zone"" ... I showed up about 10 minutes early and was almost immediately introduced to Jennifer. She sat me down, LISTENED to me and offered ideas, and the best part about it was that I was comfortable with her AND she happened to be free for the next 1 1/2 hours! She did an OUTSTANDING job, the color is fabulous, and the cut was exactly what my hair needed, and it just so happens that she does eyebrows too! I can't believe I lucked out on the first try. I think I may have found the girl who will be doing my hair for the next 20 years. Parking was easy, salon was fun&upbeat, staff was friendly, great selection of product, and they give you a ""welcome"" gift bag with coupons and free samples to boot!!! Thanks again Jennifer! :)

I went to Jamie at their Lakeview location after getting the WORST hair cut I have EVER had at a totally different salon that I will leave nameless. Well, first off Jamie was very kind, and totally knew what she was doing, she had a great plan on how to fix my hair from its mullet into something more appealing and manageable. Also I gave her free control on how my color should be and the type of cut and I walked out with a stylish, color , highlights, toner and cut that I love! The pros: she was not over booked, major to me, was very interested in my concerns, was well educated and knew exactly how to take my idea and turn it into a masterpiece. She was she was happy, energetic, patient and focused. Cons: none. Usually when I get my hair done it takes a while and I get quite a bit done, and at most places the stylist will complain about how long it will take them to do my hair or get bitchy and rude to me, and Jamie did none of that. She was attentive, through, liked what she was doing, and took great pride in her work. Which is how it should be because lets face it ladies, if I could do it myself I would go buy a box of Revlon, but we go to the pros for their experience and expect the best. You wouldn't preform heart surgery on yourself now would you, you would go to a cardiologist! So with that said I truly recomend Jamie for her experience, hard work, and over all patience and great work!

My curly hair has always been something I've been scared to cut, due to the fact most stylists do not know how to manage it. I did research on salons in Chicago that specialized with curly hair and kept coming across this one. I called to schedule my appointment two days before New Years Eve and got in NYE afternoon. The person who answered the phone was very polite and asked questions about my hair. I was set up with Kimberly and absolutely love my haircut! I pretty much left it up to her with what she wanted to do and trusted her. I was right in doing so. She cut off over a foot of hair and added bangs which in 28 years is something I've never had. I was very impressed with this salon. Everyone was friendly and the stylists know what they are doing!

Bad experience at the salon. During my haircut with Stevie, while making small talk she asked how I found out about the salon. I mentioned that I found it through CitySearch. Since the salon was so highly rated I decided to try it out. She then proceed to ask where I lived and I told her, which is about 25 min from the salon. Her response was ?You drove all the way over here for a haircut? There isn't someone local you could go to?? \r
Why would you say that to the client in your chair? Pretty smart business technique; chase a client out of your chair and the owner's salon into someone else's.

I love Tracey, she is an awesome stylist. I just moved to Chicago and have lived in NYC for a while. I am glad I found a salon where I can get a good haircut for a very good price. The only complaint I have is the customer service when you call in. They are extremely rude. So be prepared for rude people on the phone, but great service when you go there. \r

I just moved into the area and I had previously worked in salons elsewhere so I am very picky about my hair. After hearing pleasant comments reguarding the salon I decided to take the chance. I cannot express how pleased I am with the cut I received from Jenna at the Lincoln Park location. She was very professional and friendly right off the bat, and after having several short cuts in the past, this by far is the most flattering and so easy to style! I highly recommend Jenna

After 3+ years of searching for a highly skilled and friendly stylist, I found Jenna. I am a new Mom whose hair had been neglected and butchered in the past year and Jenna gave me a style that was both manageable for my new lifestyle as well as sassy and fun to fit my personality. I felt like a little of my confidence was restored. I walked out of the salon last Saturday feeling wonderful. I have gotten so many compliments in the last week! The entire staff was professional and kind. The decor of the salon was beautiful and clean. I would highly recommend this salon and if you have short/medium hair, book with Jenna.

I had a great experience at Sine Qua Non. From the moment I called, the staff was really helpful and pleasant. When I arrived, I only waited a few minutes and was offered water/coffee/tea. I worked with Jenna and she was great. I told her about my past haircut disasters and that I was not entirely sure of the cut I wanted, but that I was really just looking for a re-shaping and some long bangs. She listened to the few requirements I had and then made some simple suggestions. I felt comfortable that she knew what I wanted and that this experience would not be like my last. During the style and blowdry, Jenna gave me tips on what drying technique I should use to get my bangs to fall the right way. My hair ended up exactly as I had hoped it would! Also, this salon offers fun little perks for referring new clients and for being a first-time client. I highly recommend it.

I just scored the best haircut of my life. \r
My stylist (Stevie) was so amazing and paid attention to every hair on my head. I have long hair and I wanted it to look fabulous without looking short (yuck). I didn't think it was possible, but she pulled it off! \r
She is super personable and even likes the same books as me!\r
Besides Stevie being awesome, the shampoo girl gave a great massage and the front desk peeps were really accomadating. \r
I usually have a hard time spending too much money on my hairs, but after leaving I felt it was completely justified. It's been a couple weeks and I am actually able to style it myself and make it look as grand as she did. \r
I love Sine Qua Non!\r
I love Stevie!\r
\r
p.s. get the tea!

I was hoping to get a great cut here but it was the 2nd worst haircut in my life. My bangs are much too short, much shorter than what I asked for. My hair is cut in a way that it sticks out and I have to spend so much extra time on it to try to make it look decent. A good cut should make you spend LESS time. I should have known better - I read all the reviews here and if you go back one poster shows how some of the reviewers are salon employees, including the owner! She posted a positive review on yelp too, though at least she admits she is the owner there. I have to wonder how many of these positive reviews are under false pretenses. My overall experience at the salon was fine besides the cut, but it's no use going back to try to have someone fix it because I don't want more layers cut into my hair. I had a precision cut elsewhere in the city, it cost more but I now realize it was worth it. I wrote a great review for that salon, was hoping to do the same for this one but hopefully if you go you'll get a better cut than what I did.

I had been going to the same sylist in Michigan City, Indiana for 16 years. Long hair, permed hair, colored hair, short hair, mid-length hair, all of it. I was sooo apprehensive about change, even though I was only happy with my hair one out of every 5 times! I won't name the salon, their good folks. My daughter made me a gift of an appointment at her salon, with her stylist, at the Lincoln at Diversy location, for Mother's Day.\r
My daughter has a lovely thick mane of beautiful hair, and I do not. I had nearly given up looking trendy at my age, especially since I spend a lot of time in the summer on a motorcycle with my husband. Sam listened to my complaints about my hair, and immediately knew what colors I would like, what cut would benefit me the most, and I left the salon feeling like a grateful movie star. It is so worth the expense...and the hour and fifteen minute drive...I'm going to keep coming back to Sine Qua Non, and to Sam!!!

Looking for some much needed anti-winter rejuvenation, I visited Anne at Sine Qua Non for a facial and eyebrow wax. After being offered herbal tea, I was brought into a quiet, clean room and invited to ease onto a warmed bed. Relaxing music and lighting set a peaceful mood. Anne is attentive and therapeutic in her treatment. I have referred several people to her already and will continue to do so! For the facial, she used great products and was sooo relaxing. Wax was quick and painless. I looked and felt great afterward and friends noticed my glow for weeks afterward. This is a truly wonderful treat&retreat! Exactly what I needed!

Hands down the best haircuts in the city of Chicago. My stylist Amie is amazing. Everytime I come in (regardless if it's a cut or a trim) I leave happy! I usually come in after work, exhausted and with a fried brain. So my explanations of how I would like my hair cut are confusing, but Amie always understands my ideas! I'm sure Amie has lots of clients (and sees a handful a day), but you can tell that she sincerely cares about giving great cuts. I have recommended her to tons of firends, all of which loved their cuts and continue to go back, and I recommend her to you!!! Regardless of the type of hair you have or the cut you want I'm sure Amie will do an AMAZING job! Call Sine Qua Non (773) 871-2280 TODAY and schedule an appt. with Amie!!!

I highly recommend this salon...I received hair services from the Andersonville location. The staff was friendly and inviting. My stylist, Stevie, was informative and listened to all my concerns. I must note her precision and attention to detail when putting on my color and cutting my hair as I watched in the mirror. I was not rushed out for the next customer. But above all, I think the greatest part was an amazing hair wash following my color...no...I mean amazing...it was like butter! It was like a great scalp treatment, a suprising added bonus! The boutique setting was relaxing and not intimidating. Well worth every penny! Truly a great experience!

Many of my friends rave about Sine. I have decided to switch between two of their locations over the years. My experience near Lincoln and Roscoe was a lot more comfortable than at the Lincoln and Diversy location. (They are cool without being stuffy) I have always been greeted well at both. The haircuts near Roscoe were way better. (As far as giving me what I want) While I was at Lincoln and Diversey I tried to approach the owner and she totally brushed me off. I guess they're doing so well, it's not important to be nice anymore. That's why I go somewhere else now.

I have been to sooooo many hair salons across the city, and I must to confess that I am obsessed w/ Sin Qua Non!! Not only does it have an intimate atmosphere (hair factory it IS NOT!!), but everytime I have gotten my hair cut and colored, I walked out feeling confident and amazing. I would TOTALLY recommend stylist Libby Sterling. From day one, she listened to my crazy and oftentimes unclear preferences for cut and color- and steered me back on track when needed. Definitely try this place out.

I'm a guy who once had an eyebrow problem. Mainly it was just one brow. After trying a few different places and ending up with majorly femmy brows, a friend of mine suggested Anne at Sine Qua Non. She is magical with actually masculine eyebrows. I can't say enough good things about her. She's great at what she does and she makes you feel comfortable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Best brow waxing and shaping I've ever had. In the past, at different places I've gone, I've never been quite satisfied with my finished look. But Anne, the esthetician at Sine, spent a good deal of time shaping my brows - I almost felt like she was an artist working on a canvas! She was both professional and informative, plus very nice to boot. I've now added facials to my visits and I've never been disappointed in all the times I have been back.

after reading a million reviews on citysearch of various salons and having already had two crappy haircuts since moving to chicago from new york last fall, i was *really* hoping to find a place where i could get a good cut for not a fortune. (nothing worse than throwing down $100 for a cut you don't even like.) having curly hair and erring on the ocd-side of picky in terms of how i like my curls to look, i don't settle easily. but i took the gamble, made an appointment with libby, paid $56 (before tip) for the cut, and am really really happy with the work she did. i can't speak to the horror stories some reviewers are attesting to. everything was fine. i don't really care whether i'm offered coffee or if the person who makes my appointment becomes my best friend after one chat...that said, everyone was friendly and easy-going and i was offered hot beverages and all of that stuff. what matters to me is finding a stylist who listens and knows how to cut curly hair and will work with me to figure out what will look best. libby did that. so, if that is what you are looking for, she's definitely worth the try. good luck!

When I got to the salon, I was greeted immediately and someone took my coat and offered me a cup of herbal tea. The woman who washed my hair gave the best scalp massage. The atmosphere is really hip, but not at all stuffy. Everyone was really nice and all the stylists seem to get along really well. \r
\r
I have really thick and curly hair and every haircut I've gotten hasn't made a difference, I literally couldn't even tell I had my haircut, except for my wallet being a little lighter! But Libby gave me my first ""real"" haircut! She thinned it out, put in some great layers, I have never been happier with my hair! I don't even have to ""do it"" in the morning, just put in a little texturizing cream and go! If you have thick or unruly hair, GO SEE LIBBY!!!

The positive reviews for this salon have to be written by Sine Qua Non employees. They sound really fake, and blown up. \r
My experience here was nothing out of the ordinary. A great salon will offer you a glass ot water or coffee. I didn't get asked if I wanted anything, not even, ""may I take your coat?""\r
My stylist, was a nice guy, but used the dreaded razor on my hair, leaving my hair looking like I got my head stuck in an electric socket. The next day, I had to go to another salon to gt my hair fixed. I paid 45 bucks for the cut, and 60 to get it fixed SOMEWHERE ELSE>Never would I go into this salon to get my hair cut. I even brought a picture to make it easier. I hardly walked out of the salon looking like i got my hair done. It was awful. Sine Qua Non employees have to STOP posting their own reviews-its all advertising. If you go to some of the other salons on Citysearch-ones that have been well established and are good-they dont have nearly as many reviews as this one does. The stylist I saw here needs to go back to haircutting school. \r

Pros: Nice stylist....

Cons: who didn't know how to cut hair.

I've been going to the salon for many years, and have been mostly pleased with my experiences. Here are my recommendations:\r
1) Sheba - Excellent haircut and color every time. On the cutting edge, but knows how to match your style. Good conversationlist (or not, depending on what your mood is...doesn't do uncomfortable chitchat). No BS. Professional. Stylish. Friendly.\r
2) Susan - Only been to her once, but loved my cut. Stylish. Friendly. Listens well.\r
3) Holly - Liked my color, but not my cut. Personality can be a little abrasive, as can her brushing techniques. Good to go to if you just want color, and if you have a thick skin (literally and figuratively). Not a very relaxing experience.\r
4) Glenn - a master!! Perfect every time, and a charming personality.\r
5) Hilda - get her to wash your hair if she's available!! So kind, and the best scalp massage!!

I can't recommend Sine Qua Non enough, all of the staff are very professional and I like the atmosphere at each of the locations- this is seriousl a class act. My personal experience is that Stevie is fantastic. I have a bunch of friends that go to other staff and I have only heard great things so I wouldn't hesitate to go to any of the stylists.

I just got my hair cut this morning at the 2766 address with Amy and she did a great job. My hair is straight and very thick and she took the time to dry it properly and to reshape it after it had been blown. It's one of the best cuts I've had since I moved here from New York five years ago. I wanted to tell her boss she did a fabulous job, but was instead asked to give her kudos here. She was awesome; greet personality, great energy, very talented. It's taken me a long time to find a stylist who understands my hair. I think she's it.

I moved back to Chicago about a year&a half ago. I was ready to try 6 or more salons to find a good fit, as I have extremely high standards and expectations when it comes to my hair. I read the reviews about Sine Qua Non and found them to be spotty - most of the complaints seemed to be centered around ""rude"" or ""snobby"" staff. The positive reviews, however, were all based on what's important - quality of service. I'm not particularly sensitive to what some people perceive to be ""attitude"", so I made an appointment for a cut and color with Stevie and ever since I have been hooked. I found the atmosphere to be quite relaxed (I've been to some very upscale salons and I know snobby when I see it), and Stevie's skills are beyond compare. Since that time I have ONLY gone to Stevie at the Lincoln/Diversey location. I am always thrilled with the outcome and the staff has never been anything less than welcoming and pleasant. To those who say it's expensive I say this: you get what you pay for and you can't put a price on greatness.

I've only been in for a wax so far, but I was very impressed with the whole operation. After looking at the website I thought this place would be a bit too tragically hip; to my relief, everyone was incredibly nice and down to earth (though still very trendy). The waxing services were top-notch and I appreciated the extra time the esthetician took to talk with me before we got started. I will definitely be going back.

I just move from South America, and I dont have a credit card yet.I was desperate to have a haircut,my hair is too long and curly,so I call the salon. They offer me an appointment that same day,i was so happy but then they ask me for a credit card number,I explain my situation and they didn´t care,I even told the lady on the phone that I could go there and wait for my appointment sitting there, but nothing worked.I understand the policies of companies, but I think its not fair that if you are new in this country, just moved and in a desperate need of a haircut they dont care.I was really expecting her to understand my situation,I just hope I dont have the same experience in other places, companies, stores, etc.....just because I´m foreign and I dont have a credit card yet :-(

I even brought a photo and showed it to my stylist, but he just said ""okay"" and turned out to be just different. Okay, it doesn't have to be exactly the same. But doesn't he have to remember at least what I showed less than 5 minutes ago? I wonder what he was thinking while doing my hair. Probably nothing. My hair turned out to be just different from what I showed. And worse, he didn't even style my hair after shampoo because he already started working on other client. Just said ""Oh, it's pretty, this style SHOULD be good as it is."" IT WAS NOT! And I had to go home asap to shower and style my poor hair by myself. If he has no idea what he was working on, don't pretend to be professional. Its atmosphere might be cute, but it doesn't mean that person works for there has the same taste or even has the normal professionalism.

My experience with this salon is so and so. This review apply at lakeview and lincoln park. My experience in the lakeview area was ok, I liked the hairstylist but the front desk staff did not offer if I wanted something to drink, but people who went in after me was asked if they wanted something. So that was not very impressive. I decided to try the lincoln park locations, same experience with the front desk. It was very hot when I came in and it was also hot inside, but they did not offer if I wanted something to drink, and people who came after me was offered something. My hair cut was ok, but I liked the color. For me the front desk staff need to be more customer service oriented, first impression was bad. I decided not to go to this salon anymore.

You hear horor stories about how some salons treat guys as second-class citizens. I decided to try this salon based on the other recommendations on this site. I was welcomed as I walked in the door, and given a much-needed glass of water (and refill). The receptionist was very nice and engaged in conversation with me. Kimberly (on time) gave me a great cut at a price that won't break your back compared to other salons in the city. I will be going back.

Okay, here's the deal. I was just cruising my favorite spots on the web when I came across a couple bad reviews of Sine (BTW, that's what the cool kids are calling it these days). Alright, I can accept a few people that aren't pleased with their service; it's not a science, it's an art, people. I ALWAYS take bad reviews with a grain of salt and see them as isolated incidents. Anyone and his grandfather can post a review on this website and who's to say that they aren't jealous competitors (or, in a positive case, employees)? The fact that no one seems to remember the name of the person that ""ruined"" their hair seems suspect. Beside that point, I have been going to SQN for 3 years and despite the fact that I have no complaints, I know for a fact that if I did, it would be taken care of promptly and without attitude. I, personally, allow my stylist, Ken, to do what he feels is appropriate and I know that if I am not happy with it, for whatever reason, he will make himself available at any time to ammend the situation. I could not be happier. One caviat, however: the name ""Sine Qua Non"" makes them sound a lot more snobby than they actually are. You will not find the stereotypical ""DIVA"" here. If that's what you want, go back downtown.

I have been going to this place for a few years and am always calling last minute for an appointment. because of this i have often had to go with someone new to cut my hair. I have gone to Sam, Susan, and Sheba and they have consistently given me an awesome cut. being a rather hip place i am always impressed with the lack of pretension the employees have, from the friendly reception to the stylists themselves. I hate to give a good review as i don't want it to be any harder to make an appointment! But it's the truth, this place is top notch!

Let me just say that i have been to a great number of salons in Chicago, and i feel that finally i got exactly what i wanted without having to explain it to death! Not only did i get the highlights that no other salon has been able to accomplish in three years, but my cut turned out great too! I get compliments all the time, and i actually like doing my hair in the morning. The whole atmosphere of the salon is hip, fresh, and relaxed, and i am a devoted new client of Sine Qua Non!

I'm pretty disappointed with my experience at Sine Qua Non. After I read so many positive reviews, I felt pretty comfortable going there, but still wanted to play it safe and get a trim only since I have just finished growing my hair out from a nightmare haircut (oh put layers in your hair) experience. I explained this when I went in and the stylist said he would freshen it up only. When I left I had more layers than the awful haircut I had before. My hair is impossible to work with now and is a million different lengths. The stylist was a super nice guy, but absolutely didn't listen to me. I am so upset about my hair. I will not be back.

I'm new to Chicago and I have curly hair. I'd just had a cut at another salon, which didn't turn out very nice at all so I decided to try another salon for colour. I chose to go to Sine Qua Non after reading reviews. I must admit I was 30 minutes late for the appointment as I had mixed up the time (I'm pregnant and I get brain freezes!), but the stylist I was scheduled with said it was no problem. He recommended a demi-permanent colour, which I had had before since it's better for curly hair and it had turned out very nice. I had highlights and grey hair that I wanted covered, and he said that the demi-permanent colour would blend everything in. \r
I didn't see my colour until I got home because the stylist wasn't able to style my hair! I looked as if I had put my fingers up an electrical plug! He sais next time, to go see another stylist as he wasn't good with curly hair, then charged me the full price anyway! When I got to see the colour, it was much darker than what we had discussed. But after each shampoo (and I only shampoo every 3-4 days), it statred fading so much that my grey hair and blonde highlights satrted showing through after only 3 weeks. It's been 5 weeks now and I look as if I never had a colour done.

I got my hair cut by Amie a couple of weeks ago, and she did a fantastic job. I'm always nervous having my curly hair cut by someone new, but she did a great job, and she really knows curls. I'll definitely get my hair cut by her again.

Pros: Great hair cut, Nice staff

Cons: Parking

I always love the cuts I recieve from Sine Qua Non, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the conditioning treatment. when i booked my appointment, the receptionist asked if i'd like to add on an extra treatment and i said ""ok"" without really knowing what it was. well, my formerly dry and brittle hair feels dramatically softer and less damaged (i'm a color junkie). i would recommend it for anyone with dry or chemically treated hair. i hear they have one for scalp issues too. it's only 7 bucks and totally worth it.
