We had a reservation to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. The table wasn't ready until 30 minutes after our reservation, but that was okay.

When we sat down the server was rude to us. The food was good, but not worth the $$.

The next day I looked at my bank account and they charged me twice for a $500 dinner! Unbelievable. I called and the person that was going to take the charge off my account wasn't in until Monday.

Monday morning comes and the man, Pat, was extremely rude. No explanation for the double charge, no apology, no recourse. Again, unbelievable.

I will NOT be attending there again and will tell my friends about it.

Definitely is a place to go! Good options including, vegatals and meat. It also give you the possibility of adventuring with some no usual dishes but also if you like safe dishes it could be not the best choise. Nice outdoor dining in the summer!!

The ambiance and French Colonial Decor and combination of colored walls, candle light, white tablecloths, heavy silver and elegant china are complimented by old pre-war photgraphs of another erah in Vietnam. Stunning and tasteful! \r
\r
The food is a fusion of the most delectable exotic sauces and textures topped off with the best of service. An epicurian delight!\r

The bar and lounge is a wonderful place to relax and perhaps meet new people who enjoy the same wonderful experiences as you! Beautiful people meet at Le Colonial Bar! FIVE STARS!

I stopped at Le Colonial recently after several years. Had luinch ouitside on a beautiful Saturday afternoon where the streets were full of people for people watching! The service was excellent - I was seated promptly, water arrived within minutes. I had the baby eggroll appetizer - which was perfect for one - and a very flavorful chicken entree. Prices are not cheap, but it was a great experience, well worth the price!

if you are tired of typical restaurants (the endless debate of Italian or Chinese) this is a great alternative. Good vegetable and meat options with Vietnamese influence. Not 'too' authentic if you want to try a safe dish, but there are also some unique options if you want to be adventurous.\r

Some might say I am crazy, but I enjoyed my dining experience at Le Colonial almost as Charlie Trotters. The food, service and ambiance were all sensational.

When you dine at Le Colonial you truly feel like you have stepped out of the city streets and into French Colonial Vietnam. The food is suberb and quite reasonable for the exceptional dining experience you will receive. It's best to make a reservation on weekend nights and if you do - try sitting outside on the second floor for a truly romatnic evening. This is my favorite place to dine in Chicago and I have taken many of our friends and they always come back.

Cons: Really needs reservations on weekend to get in - not a stop by spontaneously place.

Appetizers were amazing-the beef strips, chicken w/mushrooms, and the beignets were absolutely delicious. We also got the tuna tartare and I felt the tomatoes overpowered the tuna-but still good. My entree, the chicken in a basil chili sauce was spicy, a little sweet and reminded me of more thai food than vietnamese-but very good. Absolutely order one of the signature cocktails-especially the margaritas. The service was prompt and attentive. I'll be going back for sure.

This place is just more proof that you can't get good, finely prepared asian food in Chicago. I'm Singaporean, and I've eaten Asian cuisine prepared by excellect chefs from Hong Kong, China, Shanghai, Thailand, etc. often in fine dining situations. To me it's blatantly clear that the stuff that we got at Le Colonial is food that any self-respecting Chinese restaurant would be ashamed to serve. \r
\r
I ordered the Sea Bass - and while I have to admit that the ingredients were of good quality, the execution was just absolutely uninspired, not to mention lackadaisical. The way they deployed the sauce just lacked any kind of fine touch, and so what should have been a clean, happily savoury dish turned out to be just over-salted and overly rich. An absolute waste of a nice piece of fish and some otherwise lovely tomatoes.\r
\r
My partner ordered a kind of broth with tofu. That was absolutely mystifying. It was basically just a tomato base that tasted like it came from a can, with what seemed to be cooked-from-frozen vegetables (the kind that come pre-cubed etc.), and some otherwise unremarkable tofu. Fine the tofu was egg-ish tofu, so it was smooth and not tough, but the combination of it just made for an over-salted soup that (and I'm not exaggerating) you could have poured out of a can. Whoever let that leave the kitchen, much less get on the menu, must have testicles of pure steel.\r
\r
My appetizer was barbequed pork ribs, which were okay. She got what were supposed to be ""popiah"", which, to be fair, we know has many many variations. But these again were nothing that you couldn't get from a half-way decent takeout place. Basically it's just a not-even-that-fancy spring roll.\r
\r
For dessert I had the fried banana wanton, which to anyone else is a variation on pisang goreng. Not bad, but someone seemed to have found a new toy when it came to the powdered sugar. Still not as good as some of the well made versions back in Singapore.\r
\r
As a last note, the decor is embarassing.

Pros: I could get a reservation on a Friday night

Cons: Mystifying food. Decor put together by a drunken sailor with no taste.

I was very impressed with the service and atmosphere here. They seated our party of 10 on time and the service was great throughout the night. The food was so YUMMY! We all loved it! They really made my birthday last October a meaninful one. Since then I have been back a few times and have continued to be happy with their service level and the food. I highly recommend LC for a nice evening out!

My wife and I just had dinner at Le Colonial. We had a 6:00 PM reservation. Our drinks arrived at 6:05. They insisted on taking our dinner selections at that time. Our appetizer arrived at 6:10. And, our dinner arrived at 6:20, before we had completed our appetizer. While the food was very good, the experience was that of a fast food restaurant. They were obviously more interested in turning the table than making sure we enjoyed our dining experience. We were out of the restaurant by 6:45, never to return again.

If you are lucky enough to get Saada as your waitperson you will be quite lucky eating here. With her help in selecting drinks, appetizers, entrees and desserts we had a memorable meal. We sat upstairs in the enclosed terrace to get away from the smokers in the upstairs lounge. The food was excellent, the evening a complete success.

Excellent. Words cannot begin to describe my experience at this restaurant. l am a very difficult customer to please and l must say l haven't felt like a princess since i arrived in chicago 2yrs ago until l dined at Le colonial with a friend of mine, the service was impeccable, both waiters were extremely attentive, polite, they served our food on time; and talking about the food,l had the red snapper and steamed rice as my main course,it was soooo good. At the end of dinner,we had a chat with the manager and l could see why he had an excellent staff,he was humble, charming, kind and polite. lf you haven't been to this restaturant, i think you would be missing out on the best of chicagos finest. Le colonial is far superior both in service as well as their menu than most restaurants in the gold coast area.l am definitely going back to celebrate my wedding anniversary this year.

Do so love this restaurant. The food is always wonderful. Very flavorful with exciting flavors with every bite. The food and service are consistently of very high quality. The chicken filled ravioli are the best ever. Shrimp salad is awesome, though a bit spicey. The fish is always fresh and yummy. Roasted chicken melts in your mouth. Have never been disappointed after being there many times. Anxious to return.

I joined a couple friends at Le Colonial for lunch. The service was pretty good, though a little slow at the end -- we waited around to order dessert but then ran out of time because they forgot to bring us menus. I asked for more sauce for a certain dish though and they brought it out happily and quickly, so I suspect that the menu issue was an uncommon oversight. The food is a contemporary take on traditional Vietnamese food. The flavors and quality of the ingredients were wonderful though they did mess up some of the basics like the noodles in the bun (totally forgivable though because the pork on top was fantastic!) The signature cocktails are light and refreshing. The ambiance is trendy and great for people watching. This is the perfect place to grab a healthy and tasty lunch with friends in between some shopping.

After a nice dinner, we went upstairs to the bar. I ordered a glass of wine ($10) and gave the bartender a $20 bill (I only had $20s since I had gone to a Cash Station before dinner). Bartender never came back, I chased her down 15 min later and was told I was owed no change since I only gave her a $10. I asked to speak to a manager. Manager told me nothing he could or would do, said bartenders are bonded and they don't make mistakes on bills. Manager even refused to check the register for being $10 over at night end. I said you must be kidding, and the manager told me to leave if I didn't like it. I protested and was told leave immediately or security will remove me. This is how management deals with problems? Watch out.

I was at Le Colonial May 26th and was disappointed. First, I must say that the food was very good. The seating was an issue. I took the editorial reviews recommendation to be seated upstairs. What a mistake. They pack you in like sardines in a can. The interior tables have no business being there. There is constant waitstaff and customers passing your table. Nothing like taking a bite of food with a waiters backside in your face. This is just greed on the part of the owner. If you are looking for a quiet and romantic restaurant, go elsewhere.

We took all of the waitress's suggestions and were very impressed. The scallops and monkfish were truly amazing. Although it's situated near the loud and busy Rush St area, it provides a nice intimate atmosphere inside. The service and food were flawless.

The ambience was romantic and beautiful......I was unsure on what to order from the menu (the descriptions weren't that detailed) so I asked our waiter what he recommended between the sea bass and red snapper. When my whole red snapper arrived, I was in heaven....it was savory and sweet, with a little crunch on the outside of it.....it was truly satisfied.

We had reservations for two, but had to wait for an additional 15-20min. At least they offered us some boh biah. I had a a chicken dish with mango and nuts while my boyfriend had an appetizer , some noodle dish. They were both good, but certainly nothing spectacular. We also ordered a lychee cocktail which had way too much alcohol. I couldn't even taste the lychee. \r
\r
Although the ambience is nice (a bit too dark for my taste), this place is way over rated and one can get better and less expensive food elsewhere. How I miss getting cheap good food in Asia!

We loved everthing about this resturant! The service was professional, helpful and efficient. The menu was simply wonderful with many unique dishes to choose from. Dishes are perfect for sharing, although one might not want to share because everything is just delicious. The dining room is beautiful, making you feel like you are in an exotic oriental plantation house. This is a must in Chicago!!

I've been here several times: dates, family dinners, business meetings, and each has been outstanding. The menu allows for sharing of dishes or you can order per person. The decor is beautiful and the waitstaff are pleasant and unintrusive. Lots of options for non meat eaters and entrees are portioned well.

Food was average to good, ambience was the same. Wine list...... big thumbs down. Last but now the least, staff..... big thumbs down. while they were pretty nice and polite, they has no clue of what was going on on the menu/wine list. I usually like people who know about the food and wine; maybe I'm spoilt by these European trips. But anyway, it is not acceptable when a waiter/waitress goes, ""it is the most popular wine"", "" it is the most popular dish"". I would rather they describe it to me and tell me what they think about the wine/entree rather than what others are thinking about it. I had an okay(nothing spectacular) sea bass and my girlfrend had the worst dish possible 'mi xao do bien'. I asked my server what she thought of 3 wines I chose, obviously she had no clue, so she deferred us to the resident sommelier or should I say ""I go to a lot of tastings"" (that's what the guy claims when he came to our table. I mean, I go to a lot of tasting, which doesn't make me a sommelier? Anyway, real bad wine list. If you are on corporate expense, I would say go for Le Colonial, otherwise go to Le Lan and you'll be guaranteed a better experience. The lounge upstairs in not for eating, it is too loud.

I am in Chicago on business. My colleague somehow found this place on the internet. I called at 6 on Saturday night and got a reservation for 6:30 for the two of us. We got a wonderful table on the 2nd level (lounge) on the indoor patio with a window looking down onto Rush Street. The hostesses and wait staff were welcoming with smiles and very helpful with food recommendations. The spring rolls appetizer was very tasty. I had the Chilean sea bass entree. The combination of fish, mushrooms, sauce and pasta was so good. My colleague had the diced filet and yams meal, and he enjoyed it very much. I was impressed and I would go back again.
If I were to take my significant other, I would request a window seat on the patio upstairs or in the lounge which is dark and romantic.

Le Colonial does a great job of presenting Vietnamese food with a subtle French touch. Soups have flavorful broth with just prepared ingredients sitting below. Spring rolls were light and crunchy and the dipping sauce was smooth and not overpowering. Shrimp grilled on sugar cane skewers were plump and juicy. Very cool idea.

Wine list is okay. We ate at the lounge upstairs which looked more inviting than the overly formal dining room down stairs. The Vietnamese barroom look was kind of cheesy but it was fun.

This place looks like you stepped back into time. Its very trendy and its a great place to take your loved ones . The food was good, I liked it a lot but I had better and small neighborhood restaurants in LA and NYC. But you're paying for atmosphere and I definitely enjoyed myself here. You shouldn't think twice about walking in when you pass by.

Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Food

.

This place has the best Vietnamese / French cuisine. I've been to lot of euro-Asian restaurants and so far, this is the best in Chicago. Le Colonial has the right ambiance with the top-notch service. I've really enjoyed the details, i.e. chocolate served with coffee. Price is very reasonable and dessert, coconut macaroon with vanilla ice cream is to die for.

The atmosphere at Le Colonial is clearly one of its main attractions (1920s french-colonial-vietnam dining room or the chic and sexy upstairs lounge) - the lounge is dark and mysterious, the dining room crowded yet still with a private atmosphere at individual tables. The food and service are also stellar. Amazing combinations of flavors and incredibly romantic. The teas are great and their specialty cocktail list is wooonnnnderful - try the ginger martini!

Cons: crowded, parking

Food is great. The creme brulee is one of the best I've ever had. And the food is definitely authentic.
While this place is not the cheapest in town, you can have a good meal for about $40 per person.
And like one reviewer said, you'll be transported back into time. The fans, the paneling, the staff - everything reeks of the colonial times.
I recommend this place!

Pros: Great food, Nice ambience

Cons: Not the best service

.

The food, I feel is beyond reproach. The service, on the other hand, needs work. The waitstaff was not well trained or friendly, and the bussstaff was cumbersome and not reflective of a restaurant of this nature. The atmosphere is good, a nice Gold Coast crowd. All in all, the food is on par with the best in Chicago while the other facets of this Le Colonial are less than perfect, much less.

The hostess is SO rude! We arrived, she was sitting at the bar talking so a waitress came over. We said we wanted a drink. The hostess finished talking and went and stood in front of the waitress and stared at us. As though we should know we should be talking to her. We repeated ourselves and without saying anything she pointed to the couch and looked at us like we were stupid. It was hot so we asked if we could have the air on. The hostess rolled her eyes as our waitress pointed at us. Our waitress then told us there was nothing she could do. Later, I went to the bathroom and the hostess came in there and told our waitress she likes it hot and ""too bad"" for us. We felt angry at the reception we received so we left and will not return.

Upstairs bar area a bit dark but the balcony transports you to another time and place. You forget you're in downtown Chicago. Try the midnight martini--to die for!!

Pros: Great drinks

Cons: Must like seafood

Brought back memories of the Continental Hotel in downtown Saigon (1968). The only thing out of place is that the servers wear Chinese style jackets. Would be a whole lot better and authentic if the women could wear the traditional Vietnamese dress.

Pros: Great menu/food, cheap valet parking, excellent service

I have been craving it ever since I came home! I made sure I took the delivery menu in case I couldn't wait until I went back.

The mango margaritas are great. The spring rolls have no taste - portions are MINIATURE. The $20 filet was about 4 mini-bites (the 4 bites tasted great), shrimp entree was smaller than an appetizer at other restaurants, entrees do not come with vegetables or anything to fill a human up. The Ketel One & cranberry was nearly ALL cranberry, a pure red drink. We ordered three appetizers and another appetizer AFTER dinner because we weren't full (we are not large). The server told us it's a ""family style"" restaurant and most people order ""several"" dishes apiece (@ $20). We frequently drop large amounts of cash at great restaurants and this place is a joke. We tastefully spoke with the manager, she was very clueless & dopey, didn't have much to say, no service skills. Don't go here.
