The Scene
When Natalie Tessler couldn't find a decent manicure in the Loop, she opened her own body-boosting, soul-soothing spa downtown. The result: a clean, comfortable place to trade in business-casual for plush white robes and slippers. Unwind in the New-Age-y "relaxation room" until an amiable escort leads you to your treatment room.

The Services
Dry skin loves the "Buff and Drench," a rejuvenating body wrap that exfoliates and moisturizes you inside a warm paraffin cocoon. An upper-body massage makes you melt as your skin is lavished with scented oils and lotions. The luxurious signature facial takes a corrective approach to skin care; customized to your skin type, it purifies pores while you enjoy a hand/foot massage. Other treatments include manicures, pedicures, waxing and microdermabrasion. Rinse off in a rain shower before heading back to the office.

The Details
Massage, body treatments, facials, hair removal, sunless tanning, manicure/pedicure.

Reviews for Spa Space

Ratings_icons Excellent Services!

Kerstin S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,683

Spa Space is my favorite spa in Chicago. It's reasonably priced and has a very relaxing atmosphere. I routinely recommend it to others and love giving gift certificates because you can buy them online and they will email them to the recipient for you. I went for my first bikini wax here and my esthetician put me right at ease--I wouldn't consider going anywhere else.

I was given a gift certificate to Spa Space for my birthday. I had never been, but figured, ok, I'll try it out. I am so glad that I did. I've had a few different facials there and love them all. Deep cleansing (with pore cleansing) and the Vitamin C Booster are my fav's. Afterwards your skin feels very clean, fresh and invigorated. The estheticians are wonderful.

PROS: great facials
CONS: nothing

Ratings_icons Nice Day Spa

Erin S. | insider Insider | Rank: 26,112

Spa Space is a wonderful day spa that is on one end of the Loop near all the train stations. Even though it is on the small side, the staff is very professional and the place (including the dressing rooms) are clean. I've received the best massages I've ever received at this spa, and they are fairly affordable for the location. I recommended this business to someone who was looking to buy a massage as a gift for someone, and the gift recipient said it was the best massage she had ever received.

Ratings_icons Better than ever

andreatom

I had been to Spa Space about a year ago and had a fantastic experience, and when I learned that they do group events, I decided to host my future sister-in-law's bachelorette party here. Upon return, they had expanded their space and made it much larger and even better than before. The service was professional and attentive through the planning phases, and the actual event was beautifully executed. We had a private party room (which we had to rent, but it was worth it to be able to bring in our own champagne and snacks) - and how often do you get a group of 15 women where every single one LOVED her services??? Everyone was raving about the atmosphere, the staff, the quality of their treatments, etc. If you are looking for a place to have a party - this is it! And I can attest to the fact that it's also great if you're looking for a quiet escape on your own. The Indian Head massage is a must-try. I did it in combination with a Stone massage and it was phenomenal. Enjoy the good life!

Pros: setting, quality of treatments, steam rooms

Cons: can't think of any!

Spa Space is fabulous! The staff is extremely nice and professional, and my therapist (Erin) was so good. This is by the far the best massage I have had in the City. The atmosphere is very enviting and I left feeling totally relaxed. The products they have for sale are also terrific. I will definitely be back!

Pros: staff, atmosphere, skill

Cons: location

Ratings_icons Great day at the Spa, with a few downers

hilj

I recently took myself to Spa Space for the day as a birthday gift to myself. Overall, it was a great day. The Body Buff and Drench was to die for! It was a fabulous day. Yes, the dressing rooms are a bit "open" for all to see, but really, people shouldn't be so self conscious. Nobody's looking! The robes are fabulous also, you could live in one. Look, I'm raving about a robe, that's how fabulous this place is! The only negatives are the parking (which is HORRIBLE!) and honestly Shaun needs to get over himself. But if anybody wants a day of relaxation they should definitely go here! I'm already anticipating my next birthday!

Pros: The services, the robes, the atmosphere

Cons: Some of the staff, parking

I loved my Spa Space experience... The indian head massage and the sweedish were to die for, but for mani & pedi, save yourselves a few bucks and just go to your neighborhood vietnamese gals...

Ratings_icons Nice place to unwind!

effex0r

The waiting area is awesome! It is very relaxing. I just adore the cucumber water. I had a very decent massage when I was here. The nail services could be much improved. I hear they have very awesome pedicures but I havent experienced it myself. The facial seemed good, the room was very nice and relaxing but it didnt agree with my skin. I was pretty red and swollen for half a week afterwards. It is worth a visit for a massage and just to experience the atmosphere!

Pros: Waiting area, cucumber water, atmosphere

Cons: Busy

Ratings_icons Overrated...not worth it!

mandeerosenthal

I scheduled a hot stone for myself and a pre-natal massage for my friend. We arrived 15 minutes early as we were instructed. They took my friend on time, and took me 20 minutes late so she had to wait for me to finish. The changing area is VERY public and SO small. My pregnant friend had to change in front of everyone with no place to rest her things! The massages were both decent, except the music in the room was so loud and awful that I had to ask them to turn it down. The overall experience was ruined by the terrible locker room space. Neither of us wanted to shower because it was so inconvenient! There are too many other great choices in the city to ever go back.

Pros: easy weekend parking, sunday hours

Cons: began too late, loud music, public changing area

I just experienced Spa Space for my first time. It was a wonderful experience. I love the way that the spa is layed out. I guess they just did a revamping on the place. My favorite part was the lounge area. They actually have day beds back there! I had a facial with Tasha and she was amazing! She was very detailed when she looked at my skin and she gave a destressing face/neck/shoulder/hand/arm massage. My skin looked radiant and I was glowing! I heard nothing but compliments the rest of the week. I love the product selection as well. The staff was attentive and kind. I would love to visit again!

Pros: great facials, detail oriented, pampering

Cons: no smoothies, parking

Ratings_icons MY FAVORITE MASSAGE AND FACIAL!!!

jessica_maclean

Ok...I will admit it, I am hard to please~very hard!!! I have been to ALL the "big name" spas in the city and been dreadfully disappointed by the massages and facials.

Then I went to SPA SPACE and met BILL...I had the best massage of my life. So, if all you want is oil drizzled on your body - don't take my time slot! Bill is the perfect therapist for runners, triathletes, cyclists...or anyone with an ache or pain. Bill is nothing short of amazing. I had been to numerous doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors (and bottles of Advil) but Bill was the one to identify, treat and bring relief to my injury.

Then I tried a facial with KATIE...and it was perfect. Now I leave my face in Katie's hands!!! She is so talented and uses the latest techniques.

GO SEE FOR YOURSELF!!!

Pros: BILL, KATIE, OWNERSHIP!!!

Aweful service. Beginning from front dest to the technicians. The snooty atmoshphere was far from calming. The techs could care less about your needs and concerns. The prices are extremely high for what you are recieving. Cannot understand all the hype this place is recieving....don't waste your time and money.

Pros: location

Cons: attitude, service, prices

The worst massage I ever had!!! The massage therapist did not listen to my needs or concerns. I informed the therapist that I had alot of tension in my neck and shoulders, and that I preferred heavy pressure. The entire massage consisted of light pressing and no attention to my neck or shoulders. What a rip off. Don't waste your time or money.

Cons: crowded locker rooms

Just went to Spa Space for the first time today and can't wait to come back whenever I visit Chicago again. I had vitamin booster facial and it was wonderful - in fact, it was the best facial I've ever had. Everyone at Spa Space made me feel very welcome.

Pros: Great services, Friendly staff, calm atmosphere

Went to Spa Space based on a friend's suggestion, and had an amazing first experience. Loved the space and the rainshower, but let's face it, it's all about the treatment. Had the best massage AND facial of my life - left feeling completely relaxed and renewed. Every person I encountered was friendly and helpful - no attitude like you find at so many high-end spas. Special thanks to Carolyn for bringing me tea in between my treamtents and making sure I had everything I needed! (the best tea ever, by the way!) I can't wait to go back.

Pros: atmosphere, skilled therapists, relaxing

Cons: no hair services

I've been to my share of spas, and quite simply, Spa Space is the best Chicago has to offer. The ambience is delightfully relaxing and chic, the people are warm and professional, and the services are out of this world. I've been many times for an array of services and have never been disappointed. It's a must-try, and much better value than any of the high-end hotel spas (especially considering how far superior the services are!) I'll be a long-time client!

Pros: top-notch service, consistent, relaxing

Ratings_icons Great massage

johnniebgud

I went to Spa Space a couple of months ago and had a great massage. Yet I cannot see how citysearch rates it as a luxury spa. It looks like it was thrown together. My massage room had a collapseable table, no piped in music, there was an actual boom box in the room which the therapist had to bring in her own music. Even the carpeting in the room was spotty. Hey, for a $90 massage, give me luxurious sheets, great music, a warm room and don't charge me an extra dollar on my charge card because I want to leave the tip on it. How undeniably cheap. Why isn't there a place in Chicago where you can get a great therapeutic massage at a REASONABLE price in a caring and decent environment.

Pros: good massage

Cons: expensive, shoddy atmosphere, NOT a luxury spa

Ratings_icons Atmosphere ruined it

chicolors

I had a wonderful aromotherapy message and felt amazing after my session. I left my message feeling calm, refreshed, and removed from the daily Chicago stresses (work, cell phones, etc)...until I left the actual message room, had to walk through the storefront area, and then into the locker room. What ruined my experience was the hustle and bustle of the store front area, the cell phone ringing and the obnoxious chatter in the locker room. Please, please....require a no-cell phone and quiet voice policy in the locker room so that you can fully enjoy your experience while you're still at the spa.

I was in town from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and chose Spa Space because of the reviews I read online. I am so happy I did! Everything about this place is wonderful. They were very responsive in contacting me to set an appointment (called within 2 hrs of my e-mail), the setting is very tranquil and the staff is fabulous. I will definitely come back whenever I am in Chicago and will let all my friends know about this incredible place.
Thank you SO MUCH, SPA SPACE!!!!

I can't say enough great things about Spa Space. I've been back time after time because of the great skill and service of the spa. I especially recommend the facials and hot stone massage. Definitely one of the better spas in Chicago and worth every penny. It's also nice that they don't try to force you to purchase products and focus on making sure you have a relaxing spa experience.

I am in love with Spa Space and everything about it! The staff is super-friendly, the ambience is relaxing and the treatments are to-die-for! Had the Indian Head massage - thought I'd died and gone to heaven - also the rejuvenating facial - my skin was glowing even after some pretty intense extractions. And I loved the private pedicure room for two - I was alone in the space and for the first time ever felt like a pedicure was a real spa treatment. The prices are even reasonable for what you get. To top it off, I bought a pair of earrings that I can't wear without getting about 20 compliments! Once you go here, you won't go anywhere else. Kudos, Spa Space!

Pros: terrific staff, great atmosphere, location

Ratings_icons It Must Have Been an Omen

vonda blakkley

I've been to a lot of spas in my lifetime (U.S. and Europe) and this place falls at the bottom of my list. It reminded me of a doctor's office.....and that I was waiting to get a "procedure" done. The staff was dry and the owner (who didn't bother to speak nor say welcome) was even dryer. Though I was precisley on time for my appointment, I was not serviced until 30 minutes past my appointment time with no intermittent reasons given nor apologies made. I had a maniucre (which was average). With all the other wonderful spas that Chicago has to offer, this place definitely won't be on my "top to hit" list. To put the icing on the cake, a patron took my coat by accident and I was left wearing a size 4 coat home (I'm a size 12)...It must have been an omen......

Pros: convient location, inpromptu

Cons: , expensive, dry atmosphere

I had planned a weekend trip to Chicago for my wife's birthday. Knowing how she loves massages, I made an appointment for the "Art of Touch" a couple's massage. (Why should she have all the fun.) My wife loved it and I walked out with legs of jelly. Mary was excellent and took the time to show how to properly do the techniques at home. Now my wife wants a massage almost everyday. I don't mind though because as soon as I am done with her, she does me. Thank you!!!

Pros: STAFF, FACILITY

SpaSpace has it all - great service, fantastic treatments, convenient location, reasonable prices, and a relaxing, upscale atmosphere. I can't say enough about our experience here - everyone went above and beyond to treat myself, my sister and her daughter like royalty. I had a pedicure, manicure and seaweed wrap/massage treatment which was out of this world, especially the pedicure which included a vanilla treatment that I'm still dreaming about. My sister had a pineapple mango body treatment that she loved. And everyone was so nice to my 10 year old neice, who had her first manicure/pedicure and needless to say, can't wait for her next. We loved the waiting room - it was so cozy and relaxing that we did not want to leave! We can't wait to go back!

I received a spa space gift certificate as a valentines day gift. When I received the package in the mail, the presentation wasn't anything special, just a little card wrapped in a piece of paper. So, I called to make an appointment for a bikini wax, manicure, and pedicure.

The reception was mediocre however the actual services were wonderful. Margie performed the best and most thorough manicure/pedicure I have received in ages. It was definately worth the money. I will request Margie again.

As a longtime loyal client of Spa Space, I am compelled to give the endorsement that this wonderful place and staff deserves. The great service starts at the front desk and carries through to a top-notch treatment. I frequent the facility most often for massage to treat my neck and shoulders, but I have sampled the other services and have never been disappointed. I have visited many spas around the city and even around the U.S., and what really stands out about Spa Space is the kind and nurturing staff. This is a beautiful place with beautiful people - inside and out! Thank you so much Spa Space - you have a lifetime client in me!

Pros: terrific staff, peaceful environment, smells great!

Spa Space is quite a good day spa!!! The facilities were quite spacious & open. I did like the quiet mediation/louge area in the woman's locker room. My friends & I had a facial, massage, manicure & pedicure--overall it was great, a good way to start the mid-afternoon. I especially loved the facial--my esthetician was very gentle & through. My massage was very relaxing. My manicurist, on the other hand, didn't seem very happy, but did an ok exceptional job. The only drawbacks is it does not have full spa facilities such as a steam room or sauna. The experience was well worth the $$$!!!

They were very considerate and friendly. I found Spa Space on the internet, so didn't know what to expect. My boyfriend and I did the "Spa Lovers" package which is a half day of spa services for couples. All of our services were amazing. We really liked the part where we learned how to massage each other, but then when we each had our own massage we were REALLY in heaven. I wished we could have been in the same room, but I was so relaxed I'm not sure I would have known he was there. Then, we had amazing pedicures in a private room and they gave us wine! It was an incredible day and we would like to thank the great staff for being so nice. We will definitely be back for more!

Absolutely the worst spas I've ever been to...and I have certainly experienced quite a few of them! My facialist did not listen to anything I requested. She obviously had worked there less than a couple of months. When I asked her direct questions, prior to the facial, about her training and experience, I received very roundabout answers. After a very unsatifsying experience in the facial room, I wasn't eager to have a manicure. And was I right with my apprehension! My facialist had been assigned as my manicurist at the last minute! I assume the regular manicurists all wanted to go home. Halfway through the manicure I realized she had no clue what she was doing. She didn't trim my cuticles, didn't know how to do a french manicure properly and left me with nails that looked as though my 3 year old niece did them. Don't waste your money!

Cons: unclean, unprofessional, waste of money

I had an excellent massage at Spa Space. I liked the helpful staff. They offer many spa services, but the atmosphere is hardly a spa. There is a nice shower and tiny quiet room with beverages. I would consider this an amateur spa. Maybe Spa Space should loose the food and beverage bar to make more room for the guests to enjoy a spa area. Check out Burke Williams for some tips!

I've been here for a manicure twice. Not that great. The last time I went last week, they were 10 minutes late for my appt which is a lot going on your lunch hour. Not that many shades to choose from, staff is not that friendly (esp at the desk).
