I adopted my min pin in 2003 and have had nothing but the best experience. Of course I went to Connie McDonald who shared the same views that I do about dogs being put in homes just because and not with precautions. I wouldn't put a child in a home without a thourough check and I think a dog deserves the same kind of consideration. My Princess Zoray is the heart of my life and she is a wonderful little baby. Thanks ADOPT. your do a great job.

We drove to ADOPT to look at some dogs to possibly adopt. They first made me fill out a 2 page questionaire. Then we had to wait a good 30 minutes in a waiting room. Next we took a quick 2 minute tour of where the dogs were caged. I saw three dogs that I was interested in. We were told that we would be helped by an adoption counselor shortly. So we were directed to go into the same waiting room where we waited an additional 45 minutes. Nobody bothered to check on us, so we decided to ask how long the wait would be, at which point they finally took a look at the questionaire. They quickly made the assumption that I would not be able to care for any of their dogs because I live in an apartment and I have a job. They did not bother to ask me any further questions or allow me to explain how I would care for the dog. We wasted an hour and a half and we did not get to even pet an animal. Throughout the whole process I was under the impression that I was not to be taken seriously and that I was wasting their time.

We wasted an afternoon driving to Adopt animal shelter with my four year old little boy hoping to visit a dog that we saw on the Internet which was still available for adoption. When we arrived, we were taken into a room where we were asked to complete a two page application and was told that we needed to go through an interview process. After completing the application, one of the workers came into the room and told us that she was not going to place the dog we were interested in with anybody who had young children. Without asking us any questions related to our family life or experience with the breed, she simply said that the dog was dropped once already and his back was too fragile. The workers did not seem very happy to assist us because we had a four year old. We ended up leaving the shelter without talking to counselor due to the fact that nobody wanted to work with us. We wasted a lot of time and gas driving to this shelter. If you have young children, you may want to check into a shelter that does not frown on having young children in the home.

We love this organization. We have adopted 2 cats through them and are so thankful for the wonderful care we received. All their animals are microchipped. The minimal cost to rescue ($100 I believe) covers all their initial shots and any illness or issues that are obvious. Their animals are fostered by loving volunteers until they are adpoted out. They are also a No-Kill shelter which is important to me. So many people have found their perfect pet through these caring and wonderful people!

PROS: No Kill, healthy animals
CONS: Limited hours, limited selection based on whats available

ADOPT has been around for a very long time and that's because the workers are so dedicated and involved in their mission to help animals. The adoption process is quite steep though. I mean, you have to go through about as much paperwork and background checks as if you're adopting a human child. I do think that if the adoption fee's weren't so high, more animals would be adopted.

This shelter just moved into their new premises and it looks great. The staff at this shelter really do care A LOT about the animals and the homes they go to. Some shelters just dont care where the animals go just as long as they leave "adopted". But this shelter is not like that. They thoroughly check you, your family and you home circumstances out first before you are even considered a candidate to adopt one of their precious animals. Their adoption fees are reasonable and the animals are very healthy when they go home with you. The conditions inside the shelter are very very clean and very roomy for the animals (as much as it can be for them in a shelter). I highly recommend this shelter as they are fantastic.

PROS: New premises, great staff and adorable animals
CONS: The location of Naperville is a bit far away
