zoo in need of caring keepers

by Tom J.

This zoo is okay for kids and visitors looking for something to pass their time. The zoo is not clean, outdated in many parts and quite honestly poorly planned. The children's zoo is well past its prime. The newest exhibit is coming soon and promises bears. Hmmmm, sounds as exciting as wolves walking the grounds in their exhibit.

A zoo in terrible decline

by Robert S.

After an absence of many years, I and some friends returned to Brookfileld Zoo, expecting to see the wonderful manicured gardens and the many animals represented. What we saw appalled us. Most of the animals were gone. To where, I don't know. The gardens were either shabby or gone altogether. Once peacocks roamed free on the property, now only signs warning you not to take their feathers remain. Of the actual peacocks, no one seems to know. To add insult to injury, a cold hamburger and fries will cost you over ten dollars, not to mention the ridiculous price of admission. I'm afraid I will never be back in my lifetime. So sad.

Great Zoo

by Jennifer R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,080

As of the largest zoos in the country, Brookfield means walking and lots of it. They have large variety of animals, educational programs and the dolphin show, my kids and I had a fantastic time. I would definately recommend the tram to see some of the park as there is no way you can cover it all in one day with kids. I'd say we did about 75% and the kids were exhausted.

Zoo FUn

by Susan K. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,875

I always enjoy my experience at the zoo. You do pay to get in (Lincoln Park ZOo, also in the neighborhood, is free). The zoo is very clean and all around beautiful. Great animal exhibits for the children, a dolphin show is also offered. When I went there was also a seasonal butterfly exhibit which was really neat to check out the butterflies. Also, in the winter they are open and have decorated Christmas trees. It's a nice trip to the zoo; usually you are accustomed to going in the summer--but winter is nice too.

good for an occasional visit

by n v. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,331

I'm not big on zoos, but Brookfield Zoo is deservedly considered one of the better ones. Great location in Chicago, very well maintained! Lots of interesting animals, frequent special shows and exhibits, and though they cost extra it's worth it from time to time. Open all year long, easy to get to, easy to park. Best for kids, but can be enjoyed by anyone.

Fantastic!

by Rob R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,766

What a fantastic zoo this is! Brookfield Zoo is a magnificent zoo located just outside of Chicago. My favorite part of this zoo is the unique Tropic World. You get to actually see the animals up close without them being caged. The animals are in an authentic looking environment and you walk along a path up above. You even get to experience rain!
Admission to the zoo is $8 for adults & $4 for kids.

I love this place!

by Margaret C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,690

This is the nicest zoo I have ever been too! It is huge! Has lots of great animals...tigers, lions, bears, zebras, plus it even has farm animals! The dolphin show is so cute, although they need to change from time to time, it's been the same for 5 years!
They have a play zoo center for the kids, with activities, and crafts. Even a petting zoo where they can pet farm animals.

great atomosphere for kids

by melissa p. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,413

Brookfield Zoo is a great way to enjoy a beautiful sunny day. Children and adults of all ages will enjoy the nice atmosphere and many animals that are out on exhibit. If you think you will go more than once a year then it is well worth it to get a membership and amble parking is included. The other zoo in the Chicagoland area is Lincoln Park Zoo. In contrast, Lincoln Park Zoo has limited parking and the zoo is free but there is not many animals out for the children to see.

PROS: has a dolphin show

Great Zoo in the Chicago Area

by Gary C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,563

Brookfield Zoo is the largest Zoo in the Chicago area. They have almost every type of animals you can imagine and what I like most is they are open 365 days in the year. It has over 200 acres of land for all types of animal to roam. They also have free admission on Tuesday on certain months of the year. They also have a petting zoo for kids and they also have exhibits for animals of Africa to the Savannahs. Parking is plentiful and my only complaint is the smell but it is usual in a Zoo.

Nice, but Expensive

by J.R. M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,880

I was really impressed with Brookfield Zoo, the size of the zoo and the animal exibits. There is alot for kids to participate with and the fact that they served beer smoothed things over a bit. If you go more the twice a year I would recomend a membership.

PROS: Big, Animals don't die as often as Lincoln Park Zoo
CONS: Price

Lots of fun, great exhibits

by S. B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,340

This is a very large zoo with lots of cool exhibits. There's the children's zoo, the dolphins, etc. They also have great seasonal activities, like the butterfly exhibit, and the light around Christmastime, and they have someone doing ice sculptures in the winter as well. Worth checking out, but if you don't have a membership, it's pretty expensive.

Full day of enjoyment !

by Diane B.

Very beautiful, well kept zoo. The amimals are usually active. There are many things to do. The Childrens Zoo is very clean, and there are a lot of amimals the children can pet. They even supply hand sanitizer for when you are finished. Prices are a bit high - is costs extra for the various shows and exhibits.

PROS: Very clean
CONS: prices

Great zoo

by A.k. S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,699

The Brookfield Zoo is the best zoo around (even better than Lincoln park). It is a little bit pricey with admission and parking so a family pass is the best way to go. The children's secition of the zoo is wonderful. You can spend the whole day just in that area letting your kids paint their faces or take care of stuffed animals like vets. The zoo has every kind of animal of course and the apes are especially cute since several of them have babies right now.

fun at the zoo..

by Anonymous

Prices are a little high at this zoo...you have to pay $8 for parking + your admission into the zoo. they have alot of animals to see there and also have a water show which my son always liked. they have train you can hop aboard when you get ited of walking around and it will take you throught the zoo. i always like to check out there several gift shops they have there,as they sell home made unique items. they also have several resturants located at the zoo, whether your just looking for a quick snack or want a meal. it is a nice zoo and would recommend out of towners to check it out.

Large, nice kept zoo

by Emilia G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,747

A perfect place to spend a day with the kids. Even if you go often, there are still things you discover with every visit. And the kids have a great time. From my experience- pack some snack, eating at the food court at the zoo can be pretty expensive!

PROS: large, big enough to remain things to discover next time you visit
CONS: expensive restaurants

Nice fun for the whole family

by John B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,264

The Brookfield Zoo is a great place to escape from home. The Zoo has excellent landscaping, as you walk in they have a huge fountain in the middle its very pretty. The animals seem very happy, their exhibits are well maintained. The souvenirs you buy there are kind of expensive. The have dolphin shows, those are the best.

This is a really large zoo. It is really well kept with lots of exotic animals. It has really nice greenery and even a picnic area for lunch. I really enjoyed going here and seeing all the different animals. The entrance fee is minimal and there are group discounts.
