Open for over 40 years, this restaurant and bar combo has been passed down amongst family members since it's inception.

There is NOTHING as toxic as their giant Vodka lemonades. I am fairly certain their "medium" is a 32 ounce monster. And their large is, well, larger.

But beyond their notorious reputation of being the place to be during Wells St festivals, they have a much much quieter indoor restaurant for those who want to enjoy their specialty, ribs. Besides the meat, they also have a new, much longer menu to select from.

Servers always polite, atmosphere always fun and lively, and about every game you can imagine being played at times are all reasons I come here very frequently. They also do takeout, which is amazing.

Pros: drinks, food, atmosphere

Cons: crowded during big games

Awesome ribs!! The inside atmosphere is divided into two sides - one side is a bar and the other is more of a traditional sit down restaurant. The sit down restaurant side has a little bit of an older feel to it and is not as fun. But the ribs are some of the best in the city.

We have ordered from Fireplace Inn more than once and generally enjoy it. It is expensive take-out but something different. The ribs are very tender. This last time however, we placed three orders. We were told it would take an hour and they were there promptly. Unfortunately, they only had 2 of the 3 orders. When we called to tell them they had forgotten one order they said they would send it right out. It took 65 minutes! By then we had shared what food we had and had cleaned up. The food was good but not great and with the lack of providing us with what we ordered I was very disappointed. In addition, when I picked up the bag of fries, the bottom fell out and all the fries fell on the floor. To be honest, I may have even overlooked it if anyone seemed to have cared. I rarely write anything like this, but when you pay almost $80 in take out, don't get it all, and no one cares, I am disgusted. I would have expected a coupon for the future or at least a simple, "I'm sorry" from someone who really meant it. I would have expected prompt recovery as well. I agree the place is attractive but I wasn't eating there. The service blew it for me.

Pros: Decent ribs

Cons: terrible delivery service

The food here is good, but not anything special. I was a little perturbed at the fact that I was paying $30.00 for a steak, and yet the wine was served to me in a plastic cup.... How 'bout a wine glass for goodness sake! My husband had a good meal also, but again was served a guiness beer in a plastic cup. Not the classiest of places, but just ok... Service was nothing to write home about, but the place was really busy with St. Patrick's day revelers.....

Don't waste your time or money. I have never experienced such horrible service. Employees in a drive through are more helpful and cheerful than this place. Not to mention the food wasn't worth the money you would spend in a drive through.

Are you kidding me, Fireplace Inn? This place would be great if everything was priced 50% lower. A crappy boneless rib sandwich that barely out-flavors a McRib is $7.50. Yuck. The BBQ chicken doesn't even come close to competing with much cheaper joints like Hecky's or Feed. Burgers are $10 or more, many dishes are over $20. Not. Worth. It. To top it all off, the waiter threw out the fires and mashed potatoes I wanted to take home when I asked him to wrap my meal up. Do yourself a favor and go to Twin Anchors a few blocks away.

Pros: Good BBQ sauce.

Cons: Bad boneless rib, weird chicken, very overpriced.

Very disappointed in service. Crabby waiter who couldnt understand medium well had to send food back 2 times to get it right. Will never go here again because I didnt get to eat due to my party being done prior to my food being done. Go somewhere and get your moneys worth stay away from here.

If you want to go somewhere after work and grab some dinner with 20 friends or just by yourself you can't go wrong with Fireplace Inn. The staff is just a group of great people who make you feel at home. If you are in to sports they have you covered, there is 30 + tvs to watch your favorite sports on which they are installing the new plasma tvs next month. I highly recommend trying it if you have never been before, its just a great place to eat and have fun...

Pros: Food, People, Service, Great Outdoor Bar!

Cons: No Cucumbers

Living in the neighborhood, I go to the Fireplace Inn quite often. I love it. The ribs are great; it's their claim to fame with good reason. Last saturday I went for lunch and Craig was my very charming and attentive server. I wish he had warned me not to get the boneless rib sandwich. I should have known better just by the name. I was surprised when a tiny slab of processed pork made its home in the slice of french bread. Could be compared to a McRib, but there were no pickles or onion and it was $7.00. Needless to say I will never get that again. It's okay, because the rest of my lunch was one of those "Big A$$" vodka lemonades they serve.
I'll probably be back next weekend

I went here with a few of my buddies last weekend and had a great time! The service was excellent, the atmosphere was fun and the ribs were the best I've ever had. Our server, Nikki was so great! We never had to wait for a drink, she was pleasant and seemed to really enjoy her job which is unusual to find in a server. I will definitely be coming back and would recommend this place to anyone!

From the service to the food, ill never understand why this place is still in business. I have been to bars with better food, and it has been in business since 1969? The salad tasted dirty, the steak was cooked medium well when I asked for medium rare, I didn?t even get the coleslaw that the menu says I get. When I told the server that it was cooked to much he said oh I didn?t notice. When I go to a bar to get a drink I expect service. Vince the bartender looked at me six times in 5 minutes before he finished his conversation with a fellow employee and decided to come over and ask me what I wanted to drink.
Bottom line the food is below average and the service is the worst I have ever seen. I have been there a handful of times since I live in the neighborhood with the same results every time. When I asked to talk to the owner Kye (or how ever its spelt) He never came by even though I was told he was there. There are a lot of better places to spend your money.

Pros: Good BBQ

Cons: Everything else is bad

Here is the answer to that annoying question: It's neither a sports bar nor a fancy restaurant! It is simply a hole with semi-decent bar food. It lacks atmosphere and class. Its amazing that such a great street in Chicago has no decent places to eat or drink. If you are looking for an aging crowd, ok bar food and the nastiest restrooms this side of the river then Fireplace is your spot. Overpriced and over-rated!!

Being from Texas, and growing-up on real BBQ, I'm always excited to try BBQ places in Chicago. I've lived in Chicago for 10 years now and still haven't found a really good BBQ place that matches the ones back home. This one was good, but not great. The search continues

I thought BBQ on a cold night at The Fireplace Inn would be a good idea, but I was wrong. While the lighting was wonderful and the actual fireplace kept the room warm, the food was poor. There was very little barbeque sauce on our bbq sandwich and the boneless rib sandwich was comparable to that of a McRib with the same consistency. I found the service good(unlike previous reviews), and the steak fries hearty. We ordered stuff mushrooms as an appetizer and our server brought out two plates one with cooked mushrooms and another with round seafood hushpuppies (obviously not stuffed). I'm certain there is better BBQ in chicago and I'm on a mission to find it and so should you.

We enjoyed the fun and casual atmosphere. Musicians came to our table to play their instruments and sing. The waiter was curt in the beginning but warmed as the evening proceeded. Waiter did not offer another drink. Bus person kept our non-alcoholic drinks full. Best lobster tail I ever had, great new york steak. Salad was ok. Desserts were scrumptious. Chocolate mousse was intensely good. We would definitely go back.

As a boat owner in Diversey Harbor I am always looking for a restaurant to deliver food to my boat. I found a great restaurant to do that, The Fireplace. After many tasty successful deliveries I decided a visit to the restaurant was in order. I was not dissappointed. I didn't think the food could get better but it most certainly did. No delay from the kitchen to my table certainly helped I'm sure. I highly recommend stopping in for great food and drink. All in my party left at the least satisfied, most elated.

What a find, Fireplace is the perfect place for a sunny Saturday afternoon. The start of college football when the weather is nice and games are on all day, is when I make most of my visits. Come for an early lunch, the ribs are terrific and the beer is cold. It really is a terrific experience.

PROS: All weather patio, Sports Viewing
CONS: none

Living in the neighborhood, have been here many times but stopped going due to horrible service. Servers have lousy attitude & disappear frequently. Burgers are the best bet, side salads are bland & the ribs are over-priced but tasty & prepared well. Bartenders are on the ball if the servers arent. The outdoor area is glorious in the summer and fall--just don't count on being able to order anything after initial order.

What sticks out in my mind the most are the snotty waitresses that were mocking customers in the back where they all sit and chat, smoke, and eat and don't serve their customers. I saw one girl mocking a customer with another waitress and they all began to laugh. I guarantee I won't be back. There are much better establishments in this city that have competent and more importantly MATURE waitresses.

Great Saturday or Sunday summer afternoon eatery. The location is great. Near several shops and theaters. Perfect place to stop after shopping or before you go out to party. Has an awesome outdoor seating area. Good food, great ribs, and a really nice outdoor atmosphere. Inside is kind of ordinary. Could be a little nicer.

I took a date there and I found it a nice place for that. It was a drizzly night and the attatched sheltered patio was a nice touch to sit, drink, talk and people watch. I loved the ribs and the ambience was nice. Nice location for other attractions too (comedy, trendy bars, adult book stores ?what?)

Ignore those few 3 & 5 ratings, if you want outstanding ribs. Pay strict attention to them if you desire prompt service. And stay away from anything that puts BBQ sauce on beef. The sauce here is amazing with pork, but not good on beef. We ordered the BBQ meatballs for an appetizer, and they were ok at best. The suace just doesn't work with beef. The ribs were amazing, but our waiter seemed to be playing hide and seek, emphasis on hide. Never even offered us another drink, so we were stuck with just the one. Amazing ribs though. I will be back. Just go knowing that the service is poor.
