Visiting nursing homes was something I did growing up my family always had relatives living in them. Thinking back then and now, not much has changed. Between that experience and touring other facilities prior to choosing Lee Manor, I see

Lee Manor's interior is pleasant enough and cheerful. Everything seems to be very clean. The rooms are bright with large windows. I have two concerns. Lee Manor is a 3 floor, long building with elevators only on one end. I'm concerned for my father's safety so I sat and observed the traffic. The elevators were very slow, and this was during slow evening hour. Many of the patients are handicapped or in wheel chairs. I don't see how they could quickly evacuate the far end of the building in an emergency. To get down stairs the people on the far end have to get all the way down to the front elevators. I also had a problem when I walked through the main entrance. There were 3 residents in their wheel chairs huddled outside the main entrance smoking. We had to go through a cloud of smoke. When I asked, the nurse told me smoking was permitted out back. There was a large covered area with bences for smokers but it was the back main entrance where the parking lot is. My father likes to sit outside and the smoking situation would prevent him from doing so. I'm checking out Oakton and Alden later this week.

Things you should consider about Lee Manor Des Plaines. For starters, the staff is very nice and conscientious. Over the past 3 years, however, the quality of food has steadily declined to the point that many of the meals are not edible. Meals are the brightest and most anticipated time of day for most residents. The food at Lee Manor is a huge disappointment.Very poor food quality: 1) bone in chicken legs and thighs are consistently served - very dangerous for elderly, 2) wet fish, 3) hard, generic canned fruit or a few grapes served as dessert instead of a piece of cake or pie or even strawberry Jell-O with bananas and a teaspoon of cool whip would be a treat. 4) very weird (titled) "chefs choice" recipe concoctions with unidentifiable ingredients. Nutrition: Other facilities monitor the amount of food residents eat at each meal to make sure they are getting proper nutrition and if they are not, find out why they don't care for the food. At Lee Manor, plates are immediately bussed and often times residents leave the table having eaten only soup, bread or crackers. Meal Schedule: Dinner is not started until 6:00, sometimes 6:30. This is far too long to go between meals. Right after the late dinner residents are hustled off to bed. The late dinner schedule may have something to do with the staff changing shifts. In any case, it's far too late to eat and the residents are going hungry between lunch and dinner. As you can imagine, they are afraid to say anything for fear of reprisal. Something else to consider - the switchboard shuts down in the evening which could be detrimental. If and when things improve I will revise this review.
