Great store, been around forever
by G C.
I went to school at the U of I so I know this store pretty well. I've visited a few of the other stores recently as well. Here are a few things that Am-Ko has that the other stores do not. #1) Selection, selection, selection!!! They have all kinds of foods from everywhere and not just from Korea. Whenever I'm in this store, it has customers of all ethnicities from latin, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indian, African, etc. #2) You can't really beat the prices here. Compare if you must but I know the owner really tries to keep her costs down. #3) It's been THE asian foods store for about 25 years. As for the reviewer who stated "Korean Trash" food, I'm not sure what that's all about. You can get trash foods from any country, ever go down the street to a fast food joint? It's called snacks!!! Jewel and Walmart don't have snacks??? If you want a friendly environment with cheaper foods and a wide selection, you can't beat AM-KO...

It is a nice little store. But it has many stuff. Oriental food, including various vegetables, tofu, rice, flour, sauce, noddle, cooking wares, pickles, to name a few. I was very happy to find the delicious snacks and soy flours there. I bought instant noodles and the big package of sweat rice there. The rice is cheaper than the other small packages. The noodles are very different from the other brands. The hot one is very good as a winter snack.

I used to come here very often until Green Onion sets up its business. Don't get me wrong. I still like Am Ko. But Green Onion's Deli is too attractive so I switch my attention. I still feel that Am Ko has a better selection in terms of noodles and Korean trash food. Also, Am Ko sells some small and cute gifts imported from Korea. So, if you need to buy some small and rare gifts for your American friends, you can try there. One tip, if you have a Chase credit card, try to use it when you buy things in Am Ko. I found that Chase mistook Am Ko as a gas station so the cash rebate is tripled :-). But Chase recently updates their system and I haven't went to Am Ko for couple months so I am not so sure if this tip still works. I hope so.
