How does a place remain open for years and years when fewer than 10% of its tables are ever filled and dining room ineptitude can hold its own with LA??s laziest? Several ways:

1.) Brand-showroom ?? OK with losing money

2.) Money-laundering front

3.) Successful daddy schooling loser sonny

1: brand-showroom works well for Nokia and Levi??s but not too many people go to a restaurant to browse. 2 and 3: it??s kinda hard to launder in the days of credit cards and given how long Kamehachi Old Town has been around, I??d say the offspring are either entrenched or homeless. Whatever. Kamehachi Streeterville is here to stay.

Upon entering the restaurant, one detects a faint trace of a disagreeable odor that seems like a mixture of spoiled fish and industrial cleaning solvent. Not good for a sushi restaurant. Getting seated can take several minutes and having a waiter notice can take multiples more. In all fairness, today, the waiter was prompt, polite and attentive and did an overall excellent job. However, considering that I used to work a block away and spent a fair number of lunches waiting on the waiter I can safely tell you that this experience is atypical.

When Kamehachi Streeterville first opened, getting a sashimi plate could (and did) take 45 minutes+. My party walked out before. Now, getting sashimi, 6 pieces of nigiri and 4 rolls took less than 15. Yes, nothing says PIG like when they slide over the table next to you so everything can fit. For two people. Shut up. The point is that it came, was timely and above all, GOOD! With a major exception. The tuna sashimi sucked great pacific garbage patch.

Dear Kamehachi, when one orders a sashimi plate, please do not think that you will make up in quantity what you lack in quality. Mind you that all I know about this I read in Sushi Economy but the closer a cut gets to the tail, the more of those icky white sinews and tendons one has to chew. Fish gristle is not a good thing. Tuna should melt in your mouth. I looked at the beautiful, deep red cuts of tuna nigiri at the table next to us and drooled. Why not use such cuts with ours? Would this refuse not be better camouflaged in a spicy mayo roll than a sashimi platter? You bring great shame to your family Streeterville-san.

So as not to end on a bad note, the summer rolls with spicy chili oil are the best rolls on the menu (the best of many menus) and shrimp tempura is battered and fried all over not leaving you with a raw tail to swallow like at some places. (Yes, of course I eat the tails and so should you.) And the rest of the sashimi was good too. If this experience is now the norm at Kamehachi Streeterville then I guess I can start coming again. Just get rid of that strange smell.

Kamehachi is one of my favorite restaurants. It's where I fell in love with shrimp dumplings (shumai) and what a love it is! Everything we've eaten there is delicious.

We walked into this restaurant craving oysters on a whim. It was near closing time and the restaurant was almost empty but we were seated by a polite waitress. She was attentive, friendly and even asked us for another glass of wine when it was clear the cleaning staff had performed their last duty. Japanese restaurants are not known to have oyster plates, and we had called ahead to make sure they had oysters. Even though they only had oyster shooters on their menu, they accommodated our request for an oyster plate. It was delicious. The manager graciously gave one of our orders of oysters on the house for the misunderstanding. The customer service at Kamehachi was refreshing and one of the best I've received in a very long time. They know how to treat their customers.

If you like mediocre over-priced Japanese food, try this sushi place. My husband and I were excited to have a nice sushi/sashimi dinner in Chicago. We read a few reviews and decided to dine here. We should've left when we didn't see a single Japanese person eating here. We were greeted by a hostess, and immediately seated by the sushi bar. The sushi chefs were all non-Japanese which should've been clue #2. The warm sake wasn't that warm. The rainbow rolls were pitiful. The rice was cold and soggy and the fish was not fresh. The portion was small. The miso was pretty good. I have to admit.

We ordered the sushi deluxe dinner. It was non-eventful. What a forgetful night. We wanted to hurry and pay for the meal and leave. Our check came up $65.00. I think you should try another sushi place.

I do not recommend this place. I'm Asian and expect better sushi.

We like to visit this restaurant for the rolls and the Bento boxes. Order the Dragon roll, it's the best. We've never had to wait for a table, even on a Friday night. The service has been exceptional and quick. The Bento boxes include a lot of food, very satisfying. No complaints here.

We went there on Friday night for the company party. While we wait for my party to arrive the hostess told us that we can have drinks at the bar. We ordered Godiva martini. Everybody agreed it was by far the best martini that we have ever had. The fish was fresh but a little pricey. We would go back again for martini and cute bartender!

Kamehachi has fantastic food, especially their selection of maki. The restaurant is very trendy with fantastic service. Highly recommended if you're in the mood for sushi.

The sushi at this restaurant is very fresh and tastes great! The service is great...we told the waitress we were strict vegetarians and she told us on our own what had oyster sauce, bonito flakes, etc. Most servers don't tell unless you ask. I got a chocolate martini which was great also. The strawberry mochi is very tasty. The decor of the restaurant is authentic and welcoming...beautiful paintings on the walls!

I live near this restaurant and have cravings for the food! The Turtle Rolls and Special Salmon roll is my favorite! The miso soup literally calms on a stress filled day! I have a sweet tooth and really enjoy the Moochi ice cream. The service is good, the atmosphere is beautiful and the food is a great value for a restaurant in the area. Where can you eat a good relatively healthly meal in streeterville for 2 people for around $50 to $75?

I would like to write an accurate review; however, my company and I were seated and never addressed again. We never got to taste the food. The decor is fun and trendy, and the atmosphere was lively yet not crowded. We watched a waitress serve the tables to the left and right of us; however, all we got was water from the busboy. The menu looked appetizing, but after waiting for 30 minutes and not even given the chance to order drinks we got fed up and left. The hostess had general concern and I am sure if the service was up to par we would have enjoyed our meal very much.

I must say, I almost didn't try Kamehachi because of the reviews on this site. I'm glad I followed my instinct and tried it regardless of the bad reviews. I loved it. The sushi wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was fresh and tasty. I stuck to the basics because it was a new environment to me. Next time I will try their specialty rolls. The service was exceptional, not too much, not too little. Very attentive to my needs.

Pros: Value, Service, Green Dragon (drink)

Cons: Not enough eel sauce

Very interesting-creative "space" . The food was average, not outstanding and the service was not exceptional. So many better places in Chicago for Japanese. Can skip and not miss.

I agree completely with the other lukewarm reviews of this place. It is so impersonal. Rapport with sushi-san, which is a large part of the experience, is discouraged. Eveything is, as noted in another review, mechanical with the sushi assembly line.

Fish was not fresh, and asking the sushi-san which fish was most fresh was met with a blank stare and caused my otherwise friendly waitress to come running over, as I had obviously violated the "no talking" rule.

No-one will believe this, I'm sure, but I had better sushi in Kiev last year!

We've eaten here several times and at best can only give it a fair review. The service is attentive, the decor of the modern, asian variety and the ambiance is sleek and upscale. Everything is great but when it comes right down to it, the sushi/food is average especially in comparison to other Japanese restaurants in the city. They boast creative maki and standard nigiri but the fish isn't the freshest. They have a pack of guys making sushi assembly line style and it shows. Also, the non-sushi dishes such as udon, tempura, etc were merely average. It's difficult to justify it's value in terms of food but then again, the atmosphere and service do count for something. The only memorable item was the oyster shooter which was excellent.

Hands down the best all around sushi restaurant in Chicago. The service is excellent and so is the food. The staff knows how to treat their customers. The lighting and fun background music makes the ambience perfect. You must try the Summer and Green Turtle Rolls, don't forget a few sake bombs as well, after that you'll be addicted.

The restaurant has a very inviting and open feel. Though lacking the low-key, coziness of the second floor of the original Kamehachi on Wells, the management has created a great scene to bring friends. The preparation and quality are excellent. Service seems slower than some other places, and it annoys me that they give you a drink and appetizer menu before the real menu. Overall a great place to go. Try the Northbrook roll which isn't on the menu, but is a must--it's huge!
