Never even got to a table..... Hostess told us 15-20 minutes. After 45 minutes we began to inquire and were told it would be soon. After an hour and 15 minutes we gave up and went for Chinese.

I have been to Wholly Frijoles several times before and after they were featured in multiple Chicago-area media outlets (Check, Please!, Timeout, Chicago Tribune, Yelp.com, etc.).The food really is VERY AUTHENTIC and really, really tasty. The cilantro-lime salad is good even though I am not so sure it is a traditional dish. The skirt steak choices and fish are always great and the salsa is the type we like: spicy, smoky, and somewhat waterier than the chunkier stuff you find at gringo-catered places. My only negative comment about Wholly Frijoles is that it can sometimes come off as a short-order diner. The place is very small and the staff always seems to be shimmy-ing around with notepads in hand (for on-site reservations), menus, meals, and more. The press coverage has been great for them and the really do deserve it but it is almost too busy for it to become one of our standby post-work meet-up spots.

I have been to Wholly Frijoles on several occasions and have been very pleased with the service and the food. I live a couple of miles from this place and I consider it one of my favorite Mexican restaurant's. The prices are fair and you walk out feeling satisfied. I would come back to eat here again.

I tried this place out about a month ago. First, plan accordingly; the wait will be long, so if you want to have dinner at around 7:00 p.m. go and put your name on a waiting list at around 5:00 p.m. or 5:30. The food was good! My Boyfriend had the half chicken and it was fantastic. I had a sampler dinner and it was okay, it lacked in seasoning. The dessert is really great. I will go back and have the my boyfriend's choice for dinner. Oh and don't forget to bring some wine or beer!

Not only did we wait over an hour and fifteen minutes to be seated, but the staff was totally rude, with the exception of our waiter. The food was mediocre at best, not enough spice or flavor. On top of that there was some type of insect crawling on my plate and the manager said "You were almost finished with it anyway?, does that mean it's ok to have an insect crawling on the plate I'm eating from? She never even apologized, God forbid she offer me something else or offer to pay for the meal she just said ?the insect did not come from the food.? Then where did it come from? Don't waste your time with this place that isn't even clean and offers such rude service. It should be shut down!

Food aside, the management of this restaurant is atrocious! I have never been treated so poorly in my life! After my boyfriend had sour cream spilled all over him all we were given was a halfhearted sorry from the waitress who had done it, we weren?t even offered a moist towel to wipe up the mess let alone assistance cleaning up the mess, a formal apology, or compensation for damages. After we pointed out that the clothing would have to be dry cleaned the waitress offered us $10 FROM HER OWN POCKET! Only after asking for the manager did she drag herself to our table, with much attitude. After explaining the situation she shrugged and said ?What do you want me to do? I didn?t spill it.? And walked off.
My boyfriend being the very kind, ?always do the right thing? guy that he is still paid the full bill and left a tip; when I felt we should have walked out. I was so upset that I decided to tell the manager I felt I received the worst customer service she could possibly offer and we would not be back. She proceeded to scoff at me and ask what she should have done. I told her she should have apologized, asked him to send her the dry cleaning bill and comped his portion of the meal. At the mere mention of us receiving anything for free she began yelling ?Oh I see, you?re cheap! You want everything for free!? over and over. And we had already paid.
Bottom line, if you want mediocre food and to be treated like crap go to Wholly Frijoles. Just don?t wear your good clothes.

Pros: None

Cons: The Manager

My family and I planned on going to Wholly expecting the usual crowd and its well known 45 minutes to an hour wait. But, thanks to the advise of the other diners of this site, I called ahead and was put on a wait list since they do not take reservations. Once there, we waited approximately 2 minutes, if that, before being seated. The service was friendly and prompt even though they were extremely busy. The food was outstanding, hands down the best Mexican eats in the north burbs. Even if we had to wait the usual 45 minutes it takes to get a table, the food would have been well worth it. I say go in expecting a long wait with a good attitude, and a smile on your face; you will be treated in kind, and with some awesome food to boot. You wont be disappointed.

Pros: Great food, very friendly service (you will treated as well you treat the waitstaff)

Cons: Impatient yuppies will find it difficult to dine here since the lines are long but it's for a reason- the food!

I love this place. I do not care for the chicken because it is cubed and not shredded! The guacamole and chips are really really good. Salsa is a little hot for me but i am a wimp!

Yes, the wait is long but that indicates the popularity of the place. The food was excellent and the service better than expected considering the crowd. Everything I have tasted in this restaurant has been delicious - the best Mexican food I have eaten in the Chicago area. The few disgruntled reviewers were probably ill-prepared for the wait and it is reflected in their comments - you can't fault the food or its preparation.

Pros: the food, the price

Cons: parking, waiting

The service at this establishment is appalling. The wait is long; the service indifferent; and the manager is downright rude. The food was, at best, edible. I would not recommend this restaurant if my life depended on it.

This restaurant serves some of the best Mexican food I've ever had, and I'm Mexican, so I eat Mexican food almost every day. I agree with the other reviews that the wait is incredibly long, I've waited two hours on two different occasions, and tons more have done the same. If the restaurant was as bad as the other review say, who would wait for two hours to be seated, certainly not this Mexican. I highly recommend calling ahead. the restaurant is BYOB, so I bring enough beer for me to drink while I wait and enough to drink with my meal it is a great time, please go, but don't be uptight, if u r stay home. Seriously the food is great, they have a skillet for two that can feed 4, and it tastes great.

We called to get our name on the list to avoid a wait. We got there on time and were told that it would be an additional twnety minutes. After FORTY FIVE minutes, we informed the hostess and two other employees that we were leaving because of this and they simply said, "That's fine." When I told them that that wasn't "Fine," the staff told me that I should expect to wait an indefinate amount of additional time because they were busy. When I informed them that their idea was not going to happen and we WERE going to be the next one's seated they did comply. (It was clear I was going to let the other patrons hear my dissatisfaction.) The staff then snickered and rolled their eyes among themselves because of my reaction to unnacceptable service. Run, don't walk away from this "establishment."

If you were to drive by this place you would not expect authentic and delicious food, but that is exactly what you do get here and a whole lot more. The atmosphere inside is warm and family friendly. Price wise , this is a great deal about $6 to $7 a person, you don't need reservations, and I would definetly recommend to anyone that is in the mood for mexican food.

This independent Mexican restaurant has great food, a cozy atmosphere and extremely reasonable prices. They have a children's menu, and you can BYOB. Phone ahead for reservations, though, because waits can be long.

I was amused by the food. They have these delicious chipotle mashed potatoes. And the skirt steak was perfect. It was one of the best Mexican restaurant s Ive ever been to. The service was great and my kid enjoyed the fried cinnamon ice cream. Everyone participated on singing Happy Birthday to him. I totally recommend this place with a reservation. There were people in line for 2 hours. hey the best part is BYOB :)

After waiting for 5 to 10 minutes to be seated, 5 more to order, the food came. A large portion of mediocre flautas came, too much to eat. Asked for a container to take leftovers and a small salsa condiment to go with it. This they wanted to charge for so after I was denied this I asked for an empty lid and container to empty contents that was brought with meal to which they wanted to charge for. This after spending $14.00 + for lunch. I would not recomend this establishment at all. Surprisingly cheap not to offer what was asked for to take leftovers home. These ames items, at best, cost less then $0.04.

In a Lincolnwood strip mall, this BYOB spot packs in the crowds for traditional Mexican meals--don't miss the tortilla soup.
