I have trained at very good schools in chicago but this one is top notch!! Great atmosphere, Great instruction...
Chris is the real deal not your run of the mill. a true and focused black belt who truly loves the art! If you want a place too learn REAL jiu-jitsu. look no further. Cheers
Ohana Martial Arts provides a safe and relaxed training environment coupled with high level martial art instruction. Having trained at several academies over the past seven years I will personally attest that Ohana provides a training atmosphere that is unlike any other academy. The hyper-masculine ??tough guy? attitude which is commonly associated with martial arts is not permitted at Ohana. With the absence of negativity the process of learning technique, increasing skill, avoiding injury, and making good friends is all the more possible. In regards to instruction, Chris Lund is excellent at breaking down intricate movements into digestible pieces that make learning and retaining technique possible. As a person Chris Lund engages students in a courteous, respectful manner, while encouraging a realistic training philosophy. I would highly recommend Ohana to anyone looking for detailed martial art instruction in a relaxed training environment.
I've been here for a little over a 2 years now. One of the biggest things which pointed me to Ohana was the Instructor. Chris Lund is really laid back and there are no formalities here, which make it really easy to ask him for help with techniques or questions about how to do moves. Actually you can walk up to anyone for help and they'll be more than happy to do so. The quality of instruction you receive here is amazing.
I am a science teacher at a local High School and even I have to admit the instruction/organization of the classes at Ohana are the best. The classes don't feel like a canned lesson and Chris likes to point out the finer details that I feel other places didn't spend time covering. Also while you're practicing, Chris will spend time with most everyone pointing out these details or answering questions. Another great thing is that you also spend time drilling what you've learned in class which reinforces what you've learned.
I also really like that the adult class sizes stay small around 20-30 students from white to brown and mostly blue and purple belts who are all very friendly and humble. Check your ego at the door is the sign you'll see as soon as you walk in.
Both the instructor and students pride themselves on their hospitality, and the camaraderie can be seen as you first walk in. If you are a beginner to the sport or an experienced grappler this is the place to take your game to the next level.
Also, Ohana hosts a great seminar 2x a year with BJ Penn's BJJ coach Renato Verissimo.
"Ohana" is not just a catchy name but more so a true representation of their philosophy and teaching.
There is no need to feel pressured or intimated; your first class is free! I've been training at the school for over 2 years and still can't wait to attend class each week. BJJ itself is an outstanding martial art for self-defense, physical fitness, and overall wellness/confidence. The school also offers an excellent curriculum for kids.
I urge anyone that is curious or considering BJJ to stop into the school to watch a class or jump in to try it for themselves.
The owner of this gym has been a training partner/friend/mentor for the past 12 years. I have met many martial artist during my 19 years of training and have yet to meet someone as dedicated, passionate, and talented as the instructor Chris Lund. I highly recomend anyone in the Chicago area to train at Ohana Martial Arts!!!!
I normally am not the type of guy to leave a review about anything. However, after attending the class for a few times it became clear that this is PERFECT ( for me ). Not only is the instructor highly decorated in the art, but his other students are just as helpful with the new guys. I am slightly older and going to ANYKIND of gym was a bit odd, but once i got there Chris and his other students made me feel like we were all highschool buddies. There is a relaxed and laid back feeling in his classes, and the students that are higher rank are nothing but helpful. Other students could easily abuse me, and they dont. Words cant explain how happy i am that i found this place. I only wish i found it 15 yrs ago. This is why im leaving my review 5 out of % stars!!!
I have been to several classes already at Ohana, and I have felt very welcome in such a short amount of time. The instructor takes his time to teach skills, and also shares personal connections to the art which makes us students more interested in learning. If you're looking for straight UFC prep, this isn't for you. But if you want a relaxed yet technical format for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from a legit black belt instructor, this is a great place to get it!
Having been in martial arts all my life I would say this is a great place.
Yes it is basic, like other reviewers have said ...but having been in the martial arts all my life, this is what you need and should receive for your money. The instruction is upbeat and exciting but focuses on the basics first and then advances.
The instructor there has a true passion for jujitsu and MMA and so do his students. They are helpful and considerate. I highly recommend this place . Don't pass up this opportunity.
