Same complaint about the odd and overly rich egg sauce.
But the big disappointment was the greasy, grimy tapan tables themselves. This was about the time of kosta72's visit in 2008. There was thick, black grease hardened and apparently there for a long time all over the edges of the cooking surface. When I brought this to the attention of the manager he became shockingly rude and defensive. He could have cared less. Benihana never allowed their tables to get into this state of uncleanliness. Needles to say we will never go back.

Pros: Slightly more intimate than most hibachi places

Cons: Rude Service, Grimy, greasy hibachi tables. Yucch!!!

.

First off the service is wonderful. If you want a table show go to another hibachi style place. If you want an intimite setting where the food comes first, try Ron of Japan. I don't eat the egg sauce, to be honest I don't like eggs at all, but the shell fish is amazing without it. The main staff may come off like they don't care but the owners, and the all the cooks and staff, hardly speak english. If you leave anything less than a 15% tip, they want to know what was wrong. Like the cheap people who leave 40 dollars on a 250 dollar bill, they only want to know how to make the service better, not for anymore tips. I can't tell you enough how wonderful the place was, I'm from Kansas City and I've neve been to a authentic japanese restauant, I hope they open others outside of Chicago. In the midwest there is nothing better. If you make a wish along the bridge leading to your table it feels great. Enjoy, I have for the first time but I'm certain not the last.

Pros: The wonderful food. On a slow day, great service. On a sat/sun, timely service.

went with 4 people out to dinner, bill was $250+ so i gave $40 dollar tip.
we went to leave and was stopped by waitress and manager asking for more money for tip ( very rude )

reservation was for 7:30 had to wait till 8:30
had to wait to long for refills
no table show with knives (like other ron of japan)
i will never go back
Go to hamada of japan in tinley park (alot better place)
table show, better food, nicer people, way cheaper

Ok, It's time for a different Review for Ron of Japan. My husband and I recently got married and have been fine dining in all kinds of places! We're always open to new places, so when we heard of this place, we thought, well? Lets give it a shot. Read the reviews and were assured it would be good. Our experience, was NOT good at all. The only interesting thing about this place is the fact that they cook it in front of you, but even that got old after a while. The food was bland, and most things were coated with this Yum Yum sauce, which is basically Raw Egg yolk and...Oil... yeah, not so appealing and definitely not worth raising your cholesterol for. Most places we have been to, are sometimes not that great, but this experience was really bad and definitely NOT worth about $50 per person. The next day we had to go eat out somewhere else and make ourselves feel better! So if you are into raw eggs, less elbow room and waking up and smelling like all the oils and spices of the world, this is your cup of tea! :)

My boyfriend took me here for our second date and to this date it remains one of our favorite places. It is expensive but well worth it. It is best to make a reservation, but you do not always have to call days in advance to do so. It is great for large parties and couples dining if you do not mind being seated at a table with others. The chef cooks on a large flat grill right in front of you. The chefs are all friendly and great cooks! I highly suggest getting any seafood entree, my personal favorite is the lobster tail. My boyfriend always gets the showgun which is steak and lobster, he does not even like lobster but LOVES it here. They top off their seafood with a egg sauce that is not the best for your cholesterol but takes amazing! And of course you can ask for the dish without it or add it onto another dish. They have a full stocked bar to keep you occupied during your wait and tall tables with televisions as well because this place is always packed and be sure to keep your eye out, a lot of local professional athletes love to eat here. It is a favorite among locals! The super Mai Tais are great and only one will do you justice. Every dish comes with a salad and a choice of ice cream or fresh pineapple as desert. I've never been able to finish my meal and it makes great left overs!

Pros: great food, best lobster in town, able to watch food being cooked

Cons: Very Expensive, leave smelling like a Japanese grill

My friends and family have been going to Ron Of Japan for at least 8 years. We have never been disapointed with the food. My favorite is the crown combo with the shrimp and filet. On the weekends you do wait alittle longer even if you have a reservation but, I think it is well worth it. Have a drink like the Super Mai-Tie at the bar while you wait. Everyone is always very kind and the food is great!!!

First, we had a reservation for 8:30 and were not seated until after 9 - with no apologies. They sit us at a table and we wait some more. It was about this time that the surroundings really started to set in. This place opened in the early 80's - NOTHING has changed. The dining room is essentially one gigantic kitchen, with 20+ years of greasy cooking. They have these fume hoods for the grills which must have looked awesome way back when, but they look pretty nasty now and I am not sure they exhaust anything. Be prepared to smelll like you got off a shift as a line cook.
Turns out, the table is broken and we have to wait for another party to finish before we move. When we got the car back from the valet, we had ticket. Pretty much summed up the evening.

My first visit to Chicago I had a wonderful time at Ron of Japan! The food was delectable, especially with the egg yolk sauce. Of course I returned when I was back in town to have the same experience. Unfortunately it was the exact opposite! The waitress named Kathy who was serving us had a psychotic episode! Only heaven will know, but for some odd reason Kathy thought she was part of the table conversation in my dinner party which consisted of my fianc, his best friend, and me. She became overly sensitive to comments that were never directed, nor even meant to include her! When our friend asked for some help, she dropped what she was doing and walked away! Concerned about sudden change in attitude, we asked her if she had a problem. Then all hell broke loose. She started screaming at us, threatening to call the police and telling us we had too much to drink. Her co-workers had to drag her away the table. It was a huge scene. When we discussed this with the manager, he didn't even care. In no way did he try to accommodate us, repeat loyal customers! We are never going back there again!

PROS: Egg Yolk Sauce
CONS: Mental Wait Staff!

Ron of Japan's is a dinning experience for all. We have gone with family members for birthdays and anniversaries. It location allowed us to do the night scene downtown when we were finished. We also attended with young children who loved watching the chef perform, he made sure the kids laughed and had a good time. One must is you have to try the shrimp! It is out of this world!
