I am a '03 graduate from NIU and I loved my college experience! I received a great education and made great friends. The campus is large, and walking to class can be long, but it's a beautiful campus. DeKalb is being built up and there are a lot of stores, restaurants, and shops a few miles away from campus. There are many bars and restaurants located within walking distance from campus. Your classes can be spread out from one side of the campus to the other, but once you're into your "major classes" you should primarily be in one building. There is a great free bus service offered, but make sure you leave plenty of time to get to class in case your bus is filled up and have to wait for the next one.

PROS:
CONS: DeKalb is Windy! The wind is always blowing!

I attended Northern illinois University from the fall of 2001 to the fall of 2004. I enjoyed my experiences there, I majored in communications with an emphasis on media studies, and the program was pretty awesome. The campus is usually under renovation, but it's really pretty in spots. The education is basically what you'd expect from a state school- good but not great. They're not too expensive, that's why I went there, and I did definitely get my money's worth. It's definitely worth attending, though just watch out for large class sizes and incompetent staff in the Bursar's office.

This is a great state school. They are known for a lot of their really rigorous programs. The student body is definitely huge as is illustrated by the huge class size. But that does not hinder the quality of education of this school. At this school, you are bound to meet some great people and get a good education too!

Northern Illinois University is a pretty good university on a large sprawling campus. They are famous for their nursing program and the mini-hospital like building they have for the nurses to be to practice in. Downfalls to the university are that it may take you 20 minutes to walk to class and that it gets very cold there during the winters. Another downfall is that it is known as a "suitcase" school because most students go home on the weekends instead of staying and hanging out. This is because it is in a farm town and it is a close enough drive for most of the attending to just drive home on the weekends.

This is a pretty good school for people who can't get to the city very easily. If think it's just a little bit below UIC, but a good alternative for students in the suburbs. I don't really like Dekalb itself. It seems dead when school is out for the summer. It's definitely a college town in that sense.
