I want to begin this rather long review by stating that I have never met the gentlemen at Advanced Aquatics (AA) in Schaumburg prior to 3/31/10. I am setting up my first saltwater fish tank (in probably at least 20 years. I am pretty sure that I killed all the fish back then). I didn't want to kill any of the new fish that I was planning to acquire. So I called Advanced Aquatics the morning to ask a few questions.

I initially spoke with Glenn (the owner). He was very patient with me as I asked my many questions (I feel that I need to highlight this point because I have dealt with other tropical fish stores where I was, to put it bluntly, treated quite rudely, almost - probably more than almost - as if I were a pest. And certain reviews will reveal that I was not the only one to feel this way with these particular businesses).

Some time later that day a few more questions popped into my head. I called AA again. This time John answered. He told me that Glenn was busy at the moment with another customer (whenever I get good service and/or information from any business representative, I always try to connect with the exact same person I initially had a positive experience with - one can waste WAY too much time dealing with the "wrong" person with inadequte knowledge).

John asked me if he could help, so I explained my situation to him.

Very much to my surprise, John almost immediately told me to bring in all my equipment (which I did not purchase from them in the first place) and he would give me a tutorial on how to set everything up properly. I mentioned that there was a bit of damage to certain pieces. He also very quickly replied that he would repair whatever needed to be repaired.

I, of course, immmediately asked how much this would cost me. He basically said that the repairs would be free. I did end up needing to pay less than $9.00 for whatever items that were used for the repairs that had to be taken from the stockroom shelves. I would have expected no less.

After a literal couple of hours of excellent and enjoyable education from John about how all the hardware interacts and operates, including the best way to set everything up (John also showed me that I had enough equipment to set up a refugium, too), Glenn, the owner returned to the store.

I very simply and honestly had to tell Glenn while pointing at John, "I have just had some of the best service I have ever had in my life".

Believe me, when I get particularly poor service, I will complain to management. When I get service that seems to go above and beyond, I simply must commend that experience. The kind of service I received from John is way too rare in todays world, IMO. I know that statistically many more people complain about a bad experience than those that commend a good, or excellent one.

It was very clear to me that John WANTED to help me out. That he truly ENJOYED helping me, and I am sure, other customers. There was not the slightest hint of obligation on his part. I cannot stress this fact enough.

Surely, like many others, I am also always watching for the big "sales pitch". Or for someone to attempt to even, perhaps, mislead me in some way in an effort to make a sale. Not at this place.

Although I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, I am not the dullest, either. When I consult a professional about virtually any topic that I am already interested in - and hopefully also somewhat educated in, I am there to learn. I will go in, for the most part, as if I know nothing and am an empty slate hoping to be filled with new information.

Finally, Advanced Aquatics is not a corporate owned store. This makes a big difference to me. "Real" people own it. In addition, their prices, as far as I could determine, are quite reasonable. If you keep or want to keep saltwater fish and/or invertebrates, you live anywhere within driving distance of Schaumburg, and if you want to be treated much more than fairly, this is the place to go.

Thank you for reading.

This place is great for tropical fish and coral. The staff is very knowledgeble and personable. Great place to go if you are a newbie or experienced with caring for fish and coral. Great selection of live aquaria. Their stock always looks pretty healthy.
