A wonderful place to browse, read for a while, listen to an author. The atmosphere is friendly, and feels like home. It takes a while to find what you want, but when you do, you have already purchased "surprises" on you way. It's great also for neighborhood events' announcements. Employees are knowledgable.

Pros: Lots and lots of books, many of which cannot be found elsewhere

Cons: Not wheelchair accessible, and books sometimes hard to find; also parking is difficult

This small bookstore is almost hidden from the outside, but inside casual passersby would find a pleasant bookstore. The prices are reasonable, the selection isn't unlimited but is enough to satiate all but the most voracious readers. It is a little cramped for my taste though.

57th Street Books is part of the network of the Seminary Co-Op, so the same discount for shareholders works at both stores. This subterranean store is the popular/general interest side of the Seminary, carrying children's books, sci-fi, mysteries, biographies, all kinds of genres. They have frequent book readings/signings and events for children. Great place to browse and find something new to read.

This place is exactly what I think of when I muse on what a bookstore should be like. It's underground, there are pipes running across the ceiling, and the whole place is divided into separate little rooms by bookshelves instead of walls. You could spend ages wandering from section to section, just enjoying the feel of the place, before you even get around to looking for a book. They also have a decent journal selection up front, at least for Hyde Park.
