I recently moved to McHenry and happened to stop in Fox Garden Cafe. I loved it! My soup was great and my dinner... which I tried the Broasted Chicken and Rib Combo, was finger licking good! The BBQ sauce was one of the best I've had. Whoever wrote that last review about the chicken needs to get thier taste buds checked out!

My waitress was also nice. I didn't see any man with chest hairs hanging out, but I did see whom I believe was the owner greeting people, even some by name!

Overall I had a pleasurable experience and I am definitely coming back. I recommend it to everyone.

I learned one thing from my experience at Fox Garden Cafe ?? You know you're in for very bad food.when neither the waitress nor the restaurant owner at the cash register looks you in the eye and ever asks you how your dining experience is. No kidding.

I went here with my partner as we were passing through the town. She told me of some good experiences she had years back when she used to live in that area. But being that a few years had passed, there was always the possibility that new management was there. Meaning, different short-order cook, and not the same quality of food. Bingo on all 3 counts.

We both ordered the clam chowder, which was passable but extra starchy. We also both ordered their Broasted Chicken and Ribs, which came with desert. This was the worst chicken I had eaten as long as I could remember at any family restaurant. Since when does "broasted" mean tons of breadcrumbs and deep fried??? The chicken was incredibly dry, as there was more skin and crisp than meat. As for the ribs, the nicest way to describe them is "bizarre." I had never seen so much globs of fat on top of the ribs to begin with. It was like we were being served the cheapest possible meat that would normally be recalled by a regular restaurant.

Our server was barely OK, slow on the order and got my desert order wrong. But by this time I just didn't care; we both wanted to get out of there. The owner was at the cash register ?? a Greek national who appeared to purposely leave his shirt open to expose his abundance of chest hair ?? one more bad visual I could do with out.

Overall, this was an offense to the taste, sight, and wallet of any customer. Learn from our experience and avoid this place under all circumstances. There are other restaurants with walking distance such as the Village Squire that have decent food and good customer service. As for Fox Garden Cafe, the best service they could do to the town is close (and tomorrow wouldn't be soon enough).

My water glass was dirty.

The chicken was so dry that I could not eat it.

My boyfriend had the ribs and they were full of fat and greasy.

Service was polite but slow.

They never even asked how our food was, they must have Known how bad it was.

I have been to Fox Garden 4 times with friends. The menu selection is good, everything from breakfast, sandwiches to full dinners. The food is just acceptable. I have had cold soup, raw bacon that I sent back, and a very good salad. However, each time that I visited Fox Garden it was filthy. There was old food all over on the floors. I hate eating looking at french fries and bread crumbs on the floor. I could understand this if it happened once, and would just assume that the staff hadn't had time to vacuum, but each time the floors were covered with hundreds of pieces of old food and debris, I had to brush off the booth to sit down, and the restroom was equally dirty.

Certain items on this menu, are really good, like the liver and onions and the lamb chops. Salads are nothing special, service is adequate. Soups tend to be mediocre. Sandwiches are usually a better bet than dinner.

PROS: SOME ITEMS GREAT
CONS: SALADS AND SOUPS MEDIOCRE
