Dinkel's Bakery is the absolute BEST!
by Dawn B.
Best cookies I have had in years and the cake was just as excellent. It's all about QUALITY and Dinkel's has it. I only wish they were in the south suburbs.

This bakery is like going into a magical place. It has a variety of great pastries, delicious bread and I had their hot chocolate and it was divine. I don't visit the area often, but when I am, I make a special trip to Dinkel's because it is worth it. If you want delicious and fresh, this is the place!

this is what heaven is like

I grew up on a diet of Dinkel's Bakery and Link's Deli (now closed). Do not even pretend to have lived on the north side of Chicago without having gone

Delicious!

Dinkels baked our son's Curious George cake - and it tasted just as good as it looked! Unlike other bakeries who make frosting too sweet to enjoy, Dinkels' cake was edible both inside and out!

Maybe it's because my sweet tooth isn't as strong any more, but I loved Dinkles when I first tried it, but the last few times I've had cake or pastries from Dinkles, they just haven't been as good. Maybe they weren't fresh, but they tasted a bit dry and not as good as I remember. Dinkles is good for everyday occasions, but I wouldn't go there for special occasions. Sometimes I think a cake from Costco is better or if you really want to splurge, go to a higher-priced bakery with better ingredients and better selection. It's good to support this local institution and its heritage, but as a bakery, I can't say it's outstanding. Their prices are reasonable and their selection is good, but not good enough. Their stuff is sometimes bare bones and basic--gourmet it's not.

Conveniently located near the Paulina El stop, this is the place for your morning muffin or donut (at half the price of downtown fare). Go on weekends for the coffee cakes (they sell out fast) or grab a cupcake for your special someone. Great breads and cookies, too, and cakes to order (try the brownie cake).
PROS: great baked goods at reasonable prices
CONS: limited Sunday hours

Pity the poor Chicagoan who hasn't yet discovered Dinkels Bakery. I had the fortune of living within smelling distance of this wonderful business. There is frequently a line, but the wait is worth it. Dinkels is a great whether your looking for a quick snack, or something to take to a party.
PROS: superior baked goods - their sweets are to die for.
CONS: none whatsoever

This classic bakery has been around since the 20's, and they must have survived all these years on their impeccable quality. We had a special occasion cake made here, and there are so many possible flavors it was hard to choose - but it was delicious, ready on time and beautifully decorated. We always have an apple strudel around Oktoberfest time, as well as the occasional cookie or donut when we're passing by. This is a great place and must be well run, as I have always gotten great service and delicious food here over the last several years.
