5 Stars: One of the best in the city ! (by EMS S.)

Awesome good store in the heart of Hyde Park where University of Chicago is just a walking distance. The store is pack with quality and rare used books, from text book, cook book, parenting book, just about any type of book you need. If you like to read but don't want to spend too much money, this is a paradise for you. They even often has free books put in front of the store, free for the taking.
Very highly recommended !!

5 Stars: Awesome book store! (by Jennifer D.)

This place is a great store to buy cheap books. They have an eclectic and varied collection. Prices are much lower than retail, so those of us with book fetishes can feed ourselves reasonably! The store is well laid out and easy to manuever around, although to keep prices low they have not done much (anything) with decor. That is part of the charm though, I think.

4 Stars: Low Priced books, without all the frills (by Selisa S.)

Powell's Books located in historic and trendy Hyde Park on the South Side of Chicago is a long standing business with customers who return, bringing others.

My father swore by this store, finding great finds for years. I finally visited, and found books for a 1/3 of the price of other bookstore chains. I have now introduced a third generation, but nephews and son, to this underrated gem in our own backyard!

Convenient to the CTA and Metra

PROS: used books in good condition, in trendy and cultural neighborhood
CONS: Not all titles in stock, no seating area.
