We went on this trip as an alternative to standing on a baking hot beach to watch the air and water show. After getting over the sticker shock, the $49.90 base price actually comes out at $65 including taxes and "fees" and the additional $49 to guarantee a window table, we were excited. We specifically were excited about their statement from the website "will give you one of the best seats for the Annual Chicago Air & Water Show."

We arrived and got on board easy enough, only to notice that it was pretty empty and we would have had a window table anyway, and secondly, even the non window tables were pretty friggin close! Ripoff number 1!

The food was average at best. We were amongst the first to board and it was already mostly cold. A selection of chicken something, beef something and some sides, and that was about it. Brunch at the Hancock is about $50 without the rip "fees" and is 100 times better. Ripoff number 2!

We were offered drinks, water, tea, coffee or iced tea, but no soda. You could get a refillable Pepsi product for the bargain basement price of $3.50. Ripoff number 3!

Still, it all would be worth it for the air and water show right, ....right????? NO, WRONG! We were a LONG, LONG way out, one of their sister ships was at least 1/2 mile closer, but we could barely see the specks on the horizon, unless they happened to fly over us. We were at the "site" to watch the show for maybe 45 minutes and didn't see much, not their fault as such as they don't run the show, but certainly they were way too far away to see anything water show wise, and like I mentioned the air show was mostly specks on the horizon of the city. I actually had to go ask the captain to move closer, which he did, marginally, on the way back to the pier. Ripoff number 4!

The boat itself was OK, though we had paper table cloths and both the high chair and booster seat given to us were filthy, and had to be cleaned, lord knows when was the last time they were even wiped down. The salt shaker was so wet inside it was almost solid. Little things I know, but they all speak to the general care and attention to detail of this company. There was no baby changing facilities in the bathrooms.

Last, but by no means least, there was the entertainment. Provided by the "singing servers", which might explain their lack of attention to their actual patrons. They all seemed to studying music or arts and were all invited to sing, or in most cases, shout, for the audience. They truly were terrible, and the audience would have been better served with some pub karaoke!

This cruse is not to bad. The food could have been better. I would not pay the extra 40.00 for a window seat most of the tables are by the window. Plus after you eat its more fun to walk on the deck of the ship. The entertainment was crap. Oh and my server smelled like B.O. But over all me and my date have a fairly decent time. But like the other reviewer said it would be better to go eat at a nice place by navy pier than take a tour cruse for 28.00. Hope this has helped you.

I will not recommend doing business with Spirit of Chicago. But if you still wish to then here are some tips.

- Avoid placing order by phone as you do not see what they are selling until you get the confirmation. Once you get the confirmation, it is too late to change. Use online booking instead.

.- They ask you to pay extra for a "Seat for two". Keep in mind, all the tables out there are for two and they join as required. Just a way to get more money from customers.

- Avoid paying extra for the window seat, as there is much more fun to walk up on the deck.

- The open bar does not include most of the drinks. It works well if you drink beer or cheap drinks.

- Service is slow and poor.

- Enteratinment is crap.

- Bad customer service, I did had to go to BBB to get the discount which the promised at the time of booking.

My family of six were guest on the Spirit of Chicago last night, they told us no jeans, no shorts, dress code only, there was a group from Tennesee for a family reunion, dressed in Tee shirts, jeans, flip flops, about 75 of them ...nice people but no where near the dress code.. the food was so bad, from 1 thu 5 , '0' being the worse ... the ship looks as if a good cleaning service should be called in.. It cost me $800 for a night I will remember as wasted money .... they employees were very nice, not their fault... They charged me for fluted glasses, which I did not order and $5.60 a person for all the pop they could drink.. we had one glass of pepsi at the table .. They suggested I take a window table, addtional $40 , 95% of the ship are window tables.. so buyer beware on this ship ..
Trust me, eat out and then go for a boat ride for $30
I was really taken for a ride ...

Whether you live in chicago, or are going to visit chicago, I would highly recommend taking a least on cruise on the spirit of chicago. I've taken this cruise several times...this let's you know how much I like it. To me, it is very relaxing. You get to see just how beautiful downtown chicago is. There is entertainment (you can paticipate if you want to..I just watch everyone else..ha ha) and there is food. There is also the top deck where the view is even better.

What a great time I had on this boat! It has a very down to earth feel to it. Conveniently located at Navy Pier, they offer lunch and dinner cruises. I went twice and had a blast. They have good food, a fun and friendly staff, good service and they take you around the gorgeous lakefront with some of the best scenery around. I highly recommend them for a special occasion or just to treat yourself - it's worth it.

PROS: Good food, fun and down to earth
CONS:
