.

I cannot even begin to elaborate on all the problems I had with the people running this apartment building.

The manager and building owner treated me so poorly that I've been forced to consider legal action against them both.

The manager, a man to whom I was polite for the first several months after I moved in, eventually seemed to mistake my friendliness for something else. I invited him into my apartment after he dropped by one day, after which he told my girlfriend (out of my earshot) that she needed a good spanking.

The next day, he left a *deeply* sexually inappropriate note on my car's windshield. It was unsigned, but he again made a reference to spanking me and my girlfriend, so it was very clear who'd left it.

Of course, I reported this to the building's owner immediately. Because she had been nothing but nice to me in all our interactions before, I automatically assumed she had my best interests at heart. I told her about the interactions I'd had with him up to that point, a recitation that she interrupted constantly with reassurances that I must be mistaking his behaviour for something it wasn't. Also, during my time talking to her, it became necessary to tell her that I was in a relationship with another girl, since it was relevant.

Finally, I produced the note, which she did appear to be appalled by. She asked if she could keep it, so she could "confront" him with it. I stupidly agreed.

Afterwards, she came back and told me that he had meant it as a joke, and was very embarrassed that it hadn't been taken that way. She told me that she'd take away his key to my apartment, but, since no one had ever reported anything like that before, she was going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I loved this apartment building very much (it's lovely, cheap, and in a quiet location), so I agreed.

After this, I slowly became aware of her true feelings towards me and my relationship with my girlfriend. She never outright condemned it, never ever, but she began to tell me of rules that were *apparently* in the lease (they weren't).

These were all rules prohibiting people from sleeping over more than a few nights during one lease term. She told me that my girlfriend was no longer allowed to sleep over, and I agreed. Some time after that, she told me that my girlfriend had been seen entering my apartment and not leaving. It was around then that I became aware that she had asked the manager (the one who'd previously sexually harassed us) to report what I was doing and who I was with whenever he saw me.

Some time after *that*, she told me she'd had complaints from tenants about me and my girlfriend being "loud". Keep in mind, please, that I had already been living there for a period of several months, and I'd never been accused of being loud before. Weeks after this, she sent me a letter full of items about things like my girlfriend being seen "checking [my] mail," and "leaving the apartment with an overnight bag and toothbrush," and so forth (most of which were patently false claims). When I phoned her to defend myself, she brushed me off before telling me that she hadn't witnessed any of these things personally. Even so, she warned me that if she kept hearing about my girlfriend being over all the time, she would evict me. At one point, she threatened to call my mother and tell her about my "rambunctious" sexual activities.

Needless to say, this went on for the remainder of my time there. By the end, she sent a letter informing me that she would not be renewing my lease (without giving me the mandatory 30 days notice).

Because I was out of town at the time, I had to arrange for my friends to clean my apartment. Despite an *incredibly* thorough cleaning job, she kept most of my security deposit, claiming I'd forced her to do 9 1/2 hours of cleaning/repairs (for an unfurnished efficiency apartment?).

If you're considering Utopia Apartments, please please *please* think again. And then run in the opposite direction. Fast.
