I am a lover of Korean food, however not quite as adventurous as some korean restaurants demand. I found Jin Ju to be a good common grond for someone not as into the more exotic aspects of korean food, or going to a smoky place with a menu that may be more difficult to explore without an insider.

Pros: well laid out and good menu for korean novices

Cons: a little dark

I can't say I've had authentic Korean food before, but I really enjoyed my experience at Jin Ju. The food was spicy but incredibly yummy. Nice selection of martinis and cocktails. I'm also a sucker for decor, and really enjoyed the exposed brick, loft-like feel here.

Our server was polite, informative and speedy. The restaurant did not feel like a Korean restaurant, but the food was definitely SPOT ON! The menu featured a wide variety of authentic dishes, but the prices were a little high. If you don't mind paying the higher prices (my girlfriend and I certainly didn't) you'll be quite pleased. Next time we're in town we'll be revisiting this place!

The name Jin Ju translates to pearl in Korean and it translates to that as a restaurant too. I grew up eating some Korean food, but as an adult I typically don't eat it mostly because I don't like the Korean restaurants out there. Jin Ju, however, has a really young, hip, and very clean atmosphere without being too hipster. The flavors are very authentic although some of the presentation is a little less authentic. The kim-chi jigae is really good, as is the kalbi. I also really like their ginger icecream. I used to only eat green tea icecream, but Jin Ju has made me a ginger icecream convert. This is the only Korean restaurant that I would ever recommend to anybody.

The food here is fantastic! All of it is a modern spin on Korean staples. I loved the chicken bulgoki and the battered and fried kim bop... so delicious! It can get crowded and sometimes the music is a touch too loud and you end up feeling like you are dining in a night club but I always have a good time there!

The food here was very Americanized as was the ambiance. They definitely take a more modern approach in how they present the food which can be appreciated but the food was not as traditional. They take a cool twist on some of the cocktails and drinks by using different asian inspired flavors. You can never go wrong with bi-bim-bahp which is a mixture of seasoned beef, vegetables, and rice mixed with hot pepper paste.

I first saw Jin Ju in CS, then on Check, Please. I can be a skeptic when it comes to ethnic cuisines but after several good reviews, I decided to make my way in. I was pleasantly surprised by their warm wait staff (who steered us through the menu), nice decor, and exceptional dishes. I usually have a glass of wine but tried one of their popular soju-tinis (soju is a Korean liquor much like vodka I believe) and it was excellent that I had one more. We ended our evening with tasty ginger ice cream (something new). All in all, I was VERY pleased and will find myself there again in good spirits.

Pros: atmosphere, food, service

Cons: none

Korean food is rich, tasteful, and elaborate. There are many places to go to in Chicago, but none can match the taste AND ambience AND service of JinJu. This place does justice to Korean cuisine. I strongly recommend the "Dak bul gogi" and the "Dol sot bi bim bap."

After my first disappointing experience at Jin Ju, I went back to give it another chance. My second time, however, left me just as disappointed as the first. The food is fairly authentic and the taste was bearable, however our server had much to learn about service. I just find it interesting that some of these foo foo places feel like they have the right to treat people poorly. Overall, the service made the food and the drinks taste worse than they actually were. I would not go back there again.

I am not surprised that Jin Ju was voted best new restaurant. Ive been to many Korean restaurants (even to the more famed Woo Lae Oak) that don't compete. Jin Ju is unique and everything is of high quality from their mouth-watering drinks to tasty food to superb service. And the ambience wonderful. It's a fun/hip place to go with friends or family and experience great cuisine.

I've grown up on Korean food so of course I love it but it's been hard to find a great place to go out and get Korean food... until now... ever since I discovered Jin Ju, I've been so excited... a fun, hip restaurant with great service (very impressed with our waiter's knowledge of Korean and his pronunciation even though he's obviously not Korean) but best of all the food is great!! The bulgogi and dak bulgogi (spicy chicken) were great and even the kim chee chigae which can be disappointing at some places met the approval of everyone at our table (Korean and non-Korean). I'd definitely recommend this place to everyone. By the way, the drinks are just as good as we had heard too...

I must say I was initially excited by all the positive reviews of this place. I was looking forward to eating Korean food with great atmosphere. The food isn't bad, but it's not fantastic. I must say however it is way overpriced for the portions they give you. The Kalbi looks more like 3/4 of a regular serving. I find it was a bad idea not to include a tabletop grill, which you'd find at every other Korean BBQ restaurant. The beef got tough after 10 minutes. Where is the panchan? 3 panchan??? I'm use to at least 6-10 different panchan. Where's the RICE?? The atmosphere was probably the best part, especially compared to the food. Simple decor which was pretty cool with the candles. The seats are a bit too close together though. Overall, they had a good idea. A better effort than the joke of a restaurant Soju.

I am always so pleased with my experiences at Jin Ju. My boyfriend and I go there nearly once a week! This restaurant is sure to please with phenomenal dishes, spectacular sojutinis and martinis, impeccable service, and reliable, courteous management. Plus, it's a joy to see a sleek, family-run establishment thrive in a neighborhood full of independent businesses. Be sure to try the spicy squid and the kim bob te kim appetizer. And the traditional bulgogi is always a winner. Top it all off with ginger ice cream - delicious!

Just back from a trip to Korea, I seem to constantly craving Korean food. Go figure. I have been to Korean restaurants in the city and suburbs, and many in the Seoul and Busan areas, and must say that this is one of the best. The chap chae was pefect, the bulgogi was excellent. The sojutinis are different, but fun. The staff was attentive, but not overly so...the were there to fill my water glass and provide another sojutini, take my order and give the check. I would very much recommend the restaurant for anyone looking for a good meal. We will return!
