a fine Vet

by E F B.

DeVries Animal Hospital is above and beyond the average - Led by Dr DeVries, they have kept my cats in good health. There have the normal ailments along with the occasional cuts and bruises, (yes pets get them as well as we humans.) The staff has always been there. Over the many years, I'd have nothing but praise and admiration. If you have a pet and you care about the animal - bring them to DeVries

Disappointed at Best

by Aune P.

Well, at least Dr. DeVries called. Thats about all I can say.

His feedback to my original posting is as follows:

1. He refused to address the allegation of his staff slandering the Elmhurst Animal Care Center (see below wrt animal-abuse.com) but was thrilled that his staff was able to actually do their job and get me records today (we wont tell anyone they were faxed AFTER he called me so it was likely in response to his ire and not their high intelligence or incredible efficiency).

And, even though he has no issue with his staff slandering other hospitals, he was quite upset that I would suggest that he is somehow out of synch with Vets (many of them) who agree that over vaccinating an animal can be more damaging than good, and animals only need the Distemper vaccine once every 3 years. I will agree, there are a few beliefs that currently exist in the Vet world about Distemper vaccines: one of the dominant beliefs which is quickly gaining traction in the Vet community is that dogs keep the Distemper vaccine in their bodies for between 7.5 and 15 years so may not need boosters at all, but to be safe, most who are close to this research agree dogs should be vaccinated once every 3 years until further studies prove out (heres an example: http://www.weim.net/emberweims/Vaccine.html).

The DeVries clinic, however, prefers to hang onto the old school belief which says to vaccinate annually with the corresponding annuity stream that such vaccines provide.

2. DeVries stated that working with online med pharmacies such as PetCareRx had caused him a significant headache and they could not be trusted even though they are FDA and EPA approved and are a fully licensed pharmacy in business over 10 years... Without me in the middle, he would not work with PetCareRx. Still trying to maintain that annuity stream, I guess.

3. And finally, DeVries admitted that he had received absolutely no feedback from his staff about my repeated concerns about their billing practices. That really didnt seem to bother him.

Even after I clarified that his staff justified his exorbitant fees ($90.50 vs $37.00 as example) by claiming they have a more comprehensive exam, yet when I reviewed their records, I found that those comprehensive exams were highly inconsistent and on average did not include even the basics such as taking temperatures, monitoring pulse, or documenting the condition of our animals eyes, ears, teeth, coat, etc. (in fact, the only thing that was recorded at every visit was my dogs weight), Dr DeVries simply retorted that his people documented far more than the average clinic.

Dr DeVries, I have worked for two veterinarians during my college days. While both were considered to be high end animal hospitals in good communities, comparable I suppose to what you believe your own clinic to be, both insisted on recording the basic information I outlined above at EVERY visit for EVERY animal, and neither one charged a 90% superiority fee. Good luck.

They treat your pet as if it were their own...

by Joanna S. | insider Insider | Rank: 24,792

From the moment you arrive, the staff puts you AND your pet at ease. Carmine, our cat, was pet by every passing technician! We apprecated their warmth, their professionalism...their adult treats, too! Best of all, it's easy to get an appointment no matter your schedule, yet you won't have to wait an hour to get seen. This is a great place with fantastic service!
