I want to thank the DeVries Animal Hospital for their care for my cat Junior.
Last week she disappeared from our house for a couple of days. Eventually she found her way home but something was not quite right. I was not sure if she had been hit by a car or fallen off a high tree limb or what. We took her to Dr. DeVries who has cared for our cats for 16 years. He checked her out and told us what the options were. Dr DeVries could not find anything that was obviously wrong with her but gave us a few options of what we could do.
After examination and care we took her home and watched over her. After one more visit to DeVries Animal hospital she bounced back and she is now doing much better.
Dr. DeVries and his staff has been very helpful and supportive in every way. It is difficult when your pet is sick and they can't tell you what is wrong but it helps when you have a good doctor to turn to.
Thank you Dr. DeVries and staff for all your hard work and support during a difficult time!

I was looking for a vet close to home, so based on the five-star reviews here I decided to give De Vries a try for my cat's annual exam. At De Vries, the tech weighed my boy, combed his hair to check for fleas, and took his temp; the vet listened to his heart and squeezed him a bit to check on his internals, and that was it. The annual exam that I'm used to starts with weight taken by a tech followed by a thorough exam by the vet that includes listening to his heart and lungs, using a scope to check his ears, using a light to look at his eyes, opening his mouth and using a light to view his throat in addition to a thorough probing of his teeth and gums, and a check from tip to tail to make sure nothing looks or feels out of the ordinary. At DeVries, I mentioned my concern about some bald patches developing on my cat's ears, and the vet suggested that it could be mites, but she still didn't use a scope or even look closely in his ears. The bill for the exam and shots at DeVries was about $50 more for a fraction of the care. Plus, I requested pricing for x-rays and lab work, and the cost was $100 more than my other vet. I'll gladly pay a premium for a vet's services if it is reflected in the care my cats receive. I don't know if the other five-star reviewers have never been to an actual excellent vet or if my experience was a fluke, but I will not be going back. Additionally, I'm not comfortable with the exam my cat received, so I'll need to take him to my other vet to make sure he's actually fine and pay some more money.
I must note that the vet I saw was not Dr. De Vries.
UPDATE: I took my cat for a checkup at my other vet to find that he had a bacterial infection on his ears. It required a shot of antibiotics. If the vet at De Vries had been competent, he could have been treated a week earlier and I could have avoided the expense of an additional office visit.

DeVries Animal Hospital is above and beyond the average - Led by Dr DeVries, they have kept my cats in good health. There have the normal ailments along with the occasional cuts and bruises, (yes pets get them as well as we humans.) The staff has always been there. Over the many years, I'd have nothing but praise and admiration. If you have a pet and you care about the animal - bring them to DeVries

Well, at least Dr. DeVries called. That??s about all I can say.

His feedback to my original posting is as follows:

1. He refused to address the allegation of his staff slandering the Elmhurst Animal Care Center (see below wrt animal-abuse.com) but was thrilled that his staff was able to actually do their job and get me records today (we won??t tell anyone they were faxed AFTER he called me so it was likely in response to his ire and not their high intelligence or incredible efficiency).

And, even though he has no issue with his staff slandering other hospitals, he was quite upset that I would suggest that he is somehow out of synch with Vets (many of them) who agree that over vaccinating an animal can be more damaging than good, and animals only need the Distemper vaccine once every 3 years. I will agree, there are a few beliefs that currently exist in the Vet world about Distemper vaccines: one of the dominant beliefs which is quickly gaining traction in the Vet community is that dogs keep the Distemper vaccine in their bodies for between 7.5 and 15 years so may not need boosters at all, but to be safe, most who are close to this research agree dogs should be vaccinated once every 3 years until further studies prove out (here??s an example: http://www.weim.net/emberweims/Vaccine.html).

The DeVries clinic, however, prefers to hang onto the old school belief which says to vaccinate annually with the corresponding annuity stream that such vaccines provide.

2. DeVries stated that working with online med pharmacies such as PetCareRx had caused him a significant headache and they could not be trusted ?? even though they are FDA and EPA approved and are a fully licensed pharmacy in business over 10 years... Without me in the middle, he would not work with PetCareRx. Still trying to maintain that annuity stream, I guess.

3. And finally, DeVries admitted that he had received absolutely no feedback from his staff about my repeated concerns about their billing practices. That really didn??t seem to bother him.

Even after I clarified that his staff justified his exorbitant fees ($90.50 vs $37.00 as example) by claiming they have a ??more comprehensive exam,? yet when I reviewed their records, I found that those ??comprehensive exams? were highly inconsistent and on average did not include even the basics such as taking temperatures, monitoring pulse, or documenting the condition of our animals?? eyes, ears, teeth, coat, etc. (in fact, the only thing that was recorded at every visit was my dogs?? weight), Dr DeVries simply retorted that his people documented far more than the average clinic.

Dr DeVries, I have worked for two veterinarians during my college days. While both were considered to be high end animal hospitals in good communities, comparable I suppose to what you believe your own clinic to be, both insisted on recording the basic information I outlined above at EVERY visit for EVERY animal, and neither one charged a 90% ??superiority?? fee. Good luck.

From the moment you arrive, the staff puts you AND your pet at ease. Carmine, our cat, was pet by every passing technician! We apprecated their warmth, their professionalism...their adult treats, too! Best of all, it's easy to get an appointment no matter your schedule, yet you won't have to wait an hour to get seen. This is a great place with fantastic service!
