I've gone here at least 10 times. The pasta is always fresh and has a bit of kick to it.

The reason I'm writing was I went there the other night with my parents that were in from out of town. It's hard for my dad to stand up for a long time. The place found him a stool and sat us real quick.

Pros: The food is allways good, a it's a fun place

Cons: Long wait

.

My fiancee and I dined here the other night, and neither of us could finish our dinners, so we asked to have them both boxed up to take home. Fifteen minutes later, the restaurant was closing and the waiter still hadn't brought our food back. When we asked the hostess for help, she sheepishly replied that the busboy had given our food to someone else, and since the kitchen had just closed there was nothing she could do. But it gets worse... She promised that the restaurant would make it up to us the next time we came in, but when we called the manager tonight to get our comped meals, he said he would comp one meal, but ONLY one. I told him that two dinners had been taken from us, but he insisted that the hostess said it was just one dinner, and in his words, "I'm not going to give away anything that I can't verify." The guy was so cheap and so mean that I said we wouldn't come back even for the one free meal, and he said, "Good! I'm glad to hear it!" I don't know what bothers me more: the manager's rudeness and cheapness, or the fact that both the waiter and the hostess ducked responsibility and blamed the lost food on the busboy... Stay away from this place.

I have been to Topo Gigio two times and both times I had such a great experience. It is good for date night but also for big groups because I have done both. The Seafood pasta is sooo good and the calamari is a great appetizer. I highly reccomend!

I go here with my aunts every time they visit Chicago. The food is really good and they play live music making the whole night really fun. It's in a really nice part of Old Town where it's not too congested.

This Italian restaurant is authentic, fun and serves delicious food. Tucked away in Old Town, Topo Gigio is a surprise of a restaurant. My family and I have been going here for years and cannot get over how delicious the Salmon pasta is. The prices on the food are reasonable, and the drinks vary depending on what you are ordering. I would recommend Topo to anyone who is looking to try a new Italian restaurant. The food and service pack a punch!

I go to Topo Gigio on a regular basis and yes, even though the staff recognizes me, I sometimes might have to wait for a table, especially on a Friday or Saturday night since it gets so crazy busy. However, I am happy to get a drink at the bar, after all, it's Friday or Saturday night, what's the rush? This is definitely one of my top three restaurants in the City. The food is consistently great and I always have a good time.

Pros: Some of the most authentic and consistently good Italian food in Chicago

Cons: Gets very busy on the weekends

This is the regular meeting place for my girlfriends and I. This is my favorite period. The restaurant is ver cute and even the outside garden area looks great in the winter when it's covered. Not only is the food great, but it has one of the few outside bar areas where single girls can hang out without getting harrassed. In fact, two weeks ago the host asked a patron to leave after he wouldn't leave us alone. I personally love Topo Gigio for it's food and atmosphere.

Cons: Can be loud inside on a busy night

A group of friends went to Topo Gigio, we loved it. The
service was great, from the host to our waiter. They made
us feel so welcome. The food was fantastic. A few of us
are italian, and we are not always pleased with Italian
restaurants, but we really enjoyed the food. We each had
something different and shared with each other. Everthing
was wonderful.

I am not exactly sure why this restaurant takes reservations!! After waiting for over an hour, we were so disappointed that we went elsewhere for dinner. Not only they were not apologetic, the owner/manager kept telling us that it is a good thing that we had a reservation, otherwise we would have to wait even longer!! At one point after complaining that we have been waiting for a long time, the same person tells me "clearly you don't go out often"!! Terrible customer service - Extremely disappointing.

We made reservations a month in advance planning to eat before going to a show at Second City. The restaurant was an hour behind in seating people for reservations and made no effort to be apologetic/help us out. Unfortunately we had to go elsewhere - very disappointing.

Friday night about 10pm and this place was still hopping with a dinner crowd. Seated immediately, service was quick and efficient. Enjoyed the authentic italian dishes. Prices are very reasonable and portions good size. Reasonable drink prices as well. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends.

A few friends told me that Topo Gigio was decent, but inconsistent. Let me tell you, my experience was a big time miss.

First off, the man greeting and seat the customers was very rude (and his breath was unpleasent). But that was the best part of the evening. The Calamari Fritti was like chewing on rubber O-rings from the space shuttle. The pasta in my dates linguine terre was way overcooked and lukewarm. I had the chicken valdostana and not only did it take forever to get served, it was still undercooked. I had horrible stomach cramps in the middle of the night.

Maybe it was just a off night, but I do not recommend topo gigio.

The mussels were ok, the entrees were bland and the service was HORRIBLE. Our waiter ignored us completely and none of the other staff was friendly. If you want great italian food and friendly service try Trattoria Roma across the street!

Some friends of mine and I picked the restaurant because the prices were fairly reasonable and we were shopping in Old Town. We were amazed. Every member of the staff that we interacted with was so nice we felt like regulars. The flavors in our meals were very well balanced. And, don't even get me started on the gnocchi--it was perfectly made, perfectly done, not gummy at all, held on to the sauce perfectly--the best I've had so far in Illinois. For just slightly more than shopping-center-restaurant prices, we got really great Italian cuisine.

The food is absolutely superb! Wonderful, flavorful homemade sauces...the best spaghetti sauce I've eaten in Chicago yet. The chicken dishes are delicious as well (my daughter's favorite). She orders the Chicken Petti di Pollo alla Fiorntina (a breast of chicken sauteed with pancetta and spinach baked with mozzarella, served with roasted potatoes and asparagus)....yum! The wines are very good. If you'd like the ultimate in Italian desserts, you have to try the Tiramasu. It's, hands down, the BEST Tiramasu I've EVER eaten....it's a must-try. While you're there, check out the walls of signed photos of movie stars and celebrities that were taken in the restaurant. There's also another wall of many Culinary awards.

We enjoy the bar and outdoor patio, however the service is awful. Our waiter forgot our wine for over half an hour, then did not apologize when we reminded him the second time. The food was bland and oily. We won't return.

My boyfriend took me here for our anniversary. It was a fun evening, and the food made the experience very enjoyable. Our waiter was kind. The ceaser salad was the best we'd ever tasted, and their menu items were interesting, but not too un-traditional. Topo Gigio is now at the top of our "favorite restaurants" list.

Our hotel concierge recommended this restaurant as a place for us to eat before seeing a show at The Second City. I just read the other reviews...not sure who the old host was, but our host (Tom) was very nice and not rude at all. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The service was average; our waiter seemed very busy and not really concerned with us. We sat outside with a view of the street in perfect weather, and had a great time!

I have never been to Topo and had a bad meal. I live in the neighborhood, and I understand some of the comments that have been made about the front door guy. However, you HAVE to get past that in order to get some of the best italian food ever. One of the owners is from Italy and goes back often, an really know how to keep the great italian food fresh and consistent.
P.S. To save $, ask for a carafe or half a carafe of your favorite wine, the house wines are excellent and VERY affordable

The food is for modern tastes and it reminds me of eating at night in the best places I found in Rome.

The actual owners visited with me, Frank and Li made the visit a joy, I've been back and I was greeted like an old friend.

I have had what is on and "off" menu, it is great food.

Not the place for a quiet, romantic dinner. We went on a Saturday around 9pm. The wait on the patio was 1hr, but you can also put your name down inside. We enjoyed great cocktails at the outdoor bar and got the scoop on local favorites for music and late night fun from a pleasant bartender. We were sat inside within 20 minutes and enjoyed a lovely Amarone from a diverse wine list and enjoyed fantastic fare (Lake Superior whitefish and Frutti de Mare.) Dessert was esceptional...a melt in your mouth mousse cake. We closed the evening making small talk with the host, Tony and the bartender Luka. Both of these gentlemen topped off a fantastic evening. I recommend this restaurant highly.

The food, ambience and service are great at Topo Gigio, however they do not honor reservations---UNLESS you know the owner.
Unfortunately, you will wait way over 1 hour to sit down ---even if you did make an 8:30
reservation.
Word to the wise....their are a lot of better Italian restaurants in the City so unless you befriend the owner I wouldn't waste my time.

i'm sure he is probably the owner or a relation to the owner - who else would dare to be so rude? we live in the neighborhood and eat out a LOT. but we rarely go to topo gigio because the host (older male with a significant attitude problem) is so unpleasant to deal with. you can walk up at 5pm when there is no one in the place and ask to be seated - he'll hem & haw like there might not be room for you. and don't think of going here with children. they -and you - will definitely be teated as unwelcome. its a shame - the wait staff is usually fun and the food is fine, but we also require curteous treatment at the front end when spending our well deserved nights out on the town.

Topo Gigio is a very good place to go. It gets very busy on the weekends and evenings. At times the host stand can be flightly, rude, or non existant (sometimes all three). But the waitstaff is very cordial and accomodating. When crowded the atmosphere is very fun and loud. The tables are very close together. The food is very tasty, and the portions are huge. Great for left overs. I suggest all the appetizers and entres, but skip the dessert. You probably won't have room anyways.

There is a lot of good food at this very simple, very Italian trattoria where naming just a few favorite dishes hardly covers its scope (or worth). Grilled calamari, pancetta-graced rigatoni al filo di fumo, veal or chicken---they all…
