Take your time to go over the menu, it is pretty extensive! i loved the ceviche myxto, no tomatoes, and no onions. place looks small from the front but once you are inside is not bad, plus it has a patio.
I got the empanada with meat topped with the green hot sauce.... is not on the menu so check with the waiter, i saw the people next to us having it so i asked about it.
i will be back for more.

very flavorful arroz chaufa, i got mine with seafood, my friend got it vegetarian, not much different than mine, although mine had a lot of seafood on it.
Try the pionono, a simple thing but tasty.

I had the anticuchos, they were delicious. I can't believe how tender they were and how well seasoned. Also, definitely eat the Lomo Saltado. It is a delicious steak dish with french fries and rice. I also had a lamb dish called seco de cordero. I went there as part of a wedding party, the reception was held there. I don't eat seafood terribly often, so I can't vouch for the quality, however the people around me seemed satisfied. They did a very good job accommodating everyone and providing tasty food.

First time in getting the ceviche, WOW, is like a citrus seafood salad, marinated in lime juices and full of fresh seafood, no tomatoes, i dont like tomatoes, try also the Cau-Cau de mariscos, a dish made with peruvian spices and yellow peppers, ask for a hint of rocoto on it, i like my dish spicy, service is really good, suddenly you are surrounded by afew waiters who are bringing the bread, water, food, dessert.... so many people!!
Place is BYOB, no corkage fee
parking is very easy on street
ask for plenty of the spicy sauce
ask for info. on the Peruvian Corner market own by the same owner, you can buy inca cola tshirts there.

We got to this place base on people's reviews, and yes, Ay AY Picante has the best CEVICHE in chicago, portions are huge and reasonable prices.
A tip: If you check in through FourSquare you can get a free dessert, any dessert, we did it and save a lot of $$
I enjoyed Yucca a la huancaina, which is a native dish from a city called Huancayo in peru. Brochetas de Lunahuana, which was jumbo pieces of shrimp were quiet delicious.
Kitchen is located in the middle of the room so you can see how quick they work to make your food, very impressive.
BYOB- no corkage fee
Inca Kola is a peruvian soda, make sure you get it with ice is very refreshing!!
Check the specials, they have a very extensive menu.
Good music, attentive staff, i will definitely go back to try more dishes

The place does not look like much on the outside, but once inside it is warm and friendly. I tried the filete al macho. It was so good. The shrimp sauce gave it a flavor so rich i can eat it every day. My waiter was also very cool. At the end of the meal he gave us a free flan. Word of warning, the green stuff on the table is not avocado. It is a spicy, very spicy hot sauce. I like it, but it is for those who handle fire in thier mouth

8pm on a beautiful Saturday night we were indecisive about where to eat and finally made our way here. This is our first Peruvian restaurant so, my opinion is solely focused on this place (no comparison to anything else). The area's not too bad for street parking as we strolled only 2 blocks from the car. Approaching the entrance, we didn't know what to expect because their sign outside gave you the impression it could be similar to a taqueria. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by one of the friendly servers who told us the patio was packed so, we picked out a table in the front room. It was warm and inviting- low lighting, imtimate, ample seating space (you're not rubbing elbows with the people next to you), perfect conversation levels and the smells of all sort of spices and meat filled the air. We had the Chicharron de Calmares (deep fried calamari)- if you like fried calmari for good beer food, this is IT! Next up was the Cocktail de Ceviche (thinly sliced & chunked tilapia)- just the right amount of lime & chiles. There's a big ceviche selection. I had the Sudado de Mariscos (basically a white wine & tomato based seafood stoup)- nicely satisfying, but there was something I felt was missing & can't figure it out. The shrimps weren't overcooked and there were good sized chunks of squid mixed in. My boyfriend had the Bistec Empanizado (thin breaded steak)- nothing fancy & though he said it was a tad salty, he really liked it. The portions are BIG! We could've done with one appetizer and shared an entree, but loved that we tried a few things and had leftovers. Don't forget it's BYOB, we forgot ours at home & were bummed. The Inca Colas made us happy though (tastes like cream sodas). The nearest liquor store is on Lawrence just west of Elson. We will definiltey go back to try more itmes and check out the patio.

Best Peruvian Cuisine in chicago!!!!! I enjoyed traveling and with that ethnic food. I came across with Peru a few years back and since theni have been in search to find the real Peruvian cuisine, to me this is what AY AY PICANTE -PERUVIAN CUISINE IS ...AUTHENTIC! not only for the way the food is being deliver to the table but for the flavor on each dish, i was told that the chef is peruvian (this might be the secret), on the same note waiters are very polite, ambiance is romantic and pleasant, very clean. Mr Bardales (the owner) welcomes you as a long time friend, A great find in Chicago.

This place didn't do it for me I guess since I have a Peruvian fiance I know how the dishes should really taste. The decor was relaxing and the colors warm but having an open kitchen made it too noisy and I was distracted by the chef who kept on looking at us when we were eating. Our waiter was attentive but when we walked in we didn't know if we should seat ourselves or wait (they should really have a sign).

I had the Aji de Gallina (Yellow Spicy Chicken) which is a traditional dish in Peru but when I tried Ay Ay Picante's I was shocked because they were missing the key ingredient to this dish which is the aji amarillo (yellow spices). Not only didn't it not have the authientic Peruvian flavor but it was also missing the yellowish color that it should have.

I love Peruvian food but if you really want to experience authentic Peruvian dishes and service I would recommend the secret of Chicago, Taste of Peru on Clark.

Place is nice, but i think they have to change the host, i don't think he knew what was going on. We got the menus late and he didn't even explain to us about the cuisine, Back at Macys we had a wonderful girl explaining the origins of the food and that was great!!! Anyway, we had a great time, food was pretty good but i had issues with the host.

We had a late lunch (3pm), First, we picked 3 andean dishes:
humita-sweet (made with cinnamon),
humita-chicken,
Chicken tamal.
these 3 dishes blew me away for the intense flavor of corn.
I had the fried calamaris, a bit salty but was pretty good, along with the spicy green sauce, made a perfect combination. We couldn't even finish this dish when the real entree came by "Lamb stew" big plate full of meat and juicy green sauce made with cilantro and Peruvian corn beer.
Big portion! the lamb was very tender, the canary beans was very tasty. Prices are very low for the kind of food you get, this is the real Deal! we spend less than $35.00 (total) and took food home.
Waiters were very dashing looking in their black uniform, were very attentive and courteous at all times.
Pros: Great flavor, Great for a budget, BYOB
Cons: Reservation is require

And i have the perfect place for it.............. AY AY PICANTE.......PERUVIAN FOOD! i checked it out the other day after looking for something "different" (not too pricey, byob, romantic, and exotic), all the reviews seem to gossip a lot about this place, so it is true! great service, food is fantastic, quiet romantic and far away from the noise of downtown.
I will be here again ( now with ) girl in a few days, (boy she will be surprised), i love the fried calamaris, not too greasy and tasty, this one is her favorite.
I love peruvians!!!!

Hello, we want to comment about this place,
First of all there was plenty parking available on the street, so we didn't have top go far for this, this is good.
Second, the place is very big, the information in metromix is wrong, this place could have more than 100 people and they have a patio (winter comes and maybe we can't use anymore).
Third, there was a mexican singer (part of some group) thanking the chefs with a song for a wonderful meal.
Fourth, our orders (although were many) came very quick and hot, the waiters were very polite and smiling at all times asking us if here were something else they could do for us. THIS IS SERVICE
i HAD the soup called parihuela hmmmmmmmm they said is made with peruvian corn beer........ soooo good, also the very different cocktail de camarones, this dish is only an appetizer comes in a martini glass, but is very good, the sauce is called "golf sauce" And is sweet, i had try others (in other restaurants) and the sauce seems to be different everywhere, this one is not tomatoe sauce.
Great service, fresh plates, and very interesting music, you will love it.

Great Ceviche!
I loooove the way they prepare the ceviche... sooo good! it has just the right amount of lemons and spices, we also had the traditional humita (sweet with raisins and cinnamon), for those who love meat this restaurant has a variety of dishes like lomo saltado (pieces of meat satee with onions tomatoes and fries hmmm) fillet a lo macho (grill beef with rice, beans and spices), our favorite was the anticuchos ( beef marinated in peruvian spices cooked on the grill), there are also fish dishes and the best for some of us... vegetarian dishes available!!!
They have a web side AYAYPICANTE.C O M , and you will see the complete menu, service is great, place is a byob (no corkage fee)and is perfect for groups, they also have a patio that will accommodate at least 20 people (maybe more), reservations are requested (just in case).
This restaurant was voted # 1 by the latin community as the best Peruvian Restaurant in chicago and has had great reviews (check this on line), we are glad we visited and will recommended.
We hope you can come and joy great Peruvian dishes !!

Starting with the service this place is fantastic!!! waiters are very attentive and always are coming to your table to check on you,........ we were very happy here, now the food... plates are big for one person, my group and I decided to share dishes like the tamales, humitas, fried calamares (my favorite), anticuchos which are done on the grill, and the aji de gallina, dreamy chicken with yellow sauce..
This place is also BYOB and there is no corckage charge, they do have a patio in the back of this restaurant, we were 12 people and there were still more room for more people.
The restaurant is decorated with the nazca lines (ancient civilization site in Peru) very nice done, we had a great time and recommended this restaurant, also reservations should be done ahead of time (just in case)

Beautiful place! the walls are decorated with Nasca lines and red linen on the tables, we saw the reviewed done by channel 7 and decided to try it, WOW food is great, we had the dish suggested by channel 7 called pescado a la basca , so soft , it kind of has a teriyaki flavor and the sweet tamales.... i think this has the name of humitas, it is prepare different and taste just wonderful.
Services was very attentive, waiter were checking on us all the time and very courteous, this is how service should be, we also try a beef dish, lomo saltado, which i have seen a lot but i have to admit that this one has a lot of flavor.... we enjoy the place and enjoy the service, i will recommended to everyone, they also have a patio on the back good for private parties.
we were veryu happy!!!

I recently saw a review on the pink magazine about Ay Ay Picante, I was curious about this kind of food Peruvian they said, they mention about a variety of seafood dishes (among others) and let me tell you that I was overwhelm not only for the food (cebiche, seafood salad) but for the size of the plates, prices are very reasonable, potato relleno (mashed potato deep fried filled with a beef stew, hmmm it was delicious) the restaurant also has some designs on the walls part of their native background which to me makes of this restaurant a very unique Peruvian restaurant. We had a wonderful time here

Pros: parking everywhere, not too crowded

.

The Peruvian Restaurant 'Ay, Ay Picante', (http://ayaypicante.com) located at 4569 N. Elston Ave., has a vast and diverse Peruvian menu, which include seafood, meats, fish, chicken, and a variety of desserts. Peruvian cuisine and Ay Ay Picante have a diverse flavor due to Peru's abundance of natural resources and its proximity to the ocean. Its food and flavors are also influenced by many cultures. It comes from the Inca, Spanish, Chinese, African, and Japanese cultures. The thing I like the best is Ceviche, which is like a Peruvian sushi salad.

Also, the have the Nazca lines on the walls!
