5 Stars: Variety Comics Store (by John R.)

The man behind the counter is Ric, he's the man when it comes to Stan and any other indie and/or mainstream comics. I have been going to variety since 2005 and haven't missed a Wed since. I have a subscription as well and have had it since 06. If you're wandering in to take a look or planning on finding a steady source for a reliable stock in your comic choices, you can find there. I haven't once need to find another source for comics I wanted old or new. And as far as toys are concerned and posters are concerned, he has stock and can order anything you ask him for just as long as you have an exact description of what you want.

Pros. All in all I don't have a reason to shop elsewhere, I buy many sorts of merchandise and comics.
Cons. I have a tight budget.

5 Stars: Chicago's oldest comic book store (by Michael R.)

I've been going to Variety Comics for over 20 years. While being a small store, they do carry a great selection of comics, old and new. The owner, Rick, knows his stuff and does an amazing job of taking care of his regular customers. If there's a older comic book that you're looking for and can't find at his store, ask him. There's a good chance he can get it for you at a reasonable price. And yes, there is a subscription service in place.

5 Stars: great new and used comics (by chris m.)

A little basement shop on the corner of Western avenue. The outside of the building is covered in murals of Marvel comic type figures. A tremendous selection of comic books, great prices, open 7 days a week at about noon. The owner, Neal I believe his name was, is very knowledgeable and a very nice man to boot.

5 Stars: Comics R Us (by Steven M.)

I've been making the rounds to as many comic/toy/collectible shops as I can, and this one has a selection of comics and graphic novels that are second to none. It seems that just about any independent books are available as well as the standard marvel,dc,dark horse, image and the like.

It's a very small store, with a entrance that could be overlooked easily if not for the paintings of superheroes on the outside. Inside, it's sparsely decorated with the area behind the counter being especially unused and messy.

However, with comic shops, decor is rarely positively impressive. Overall, it has a nice selection of back issues and current books as well as graphic novels and the like. No subscription service is offered, which I think does more harm than good.

Comics are the game here, and there are really no toys, games or cards at all.

PROS: Huge selection
CONS: Parking, no sub service

3 Stars: Vintage Comics On Western Avenue (by Robert L.)

Very cool murals of comic book heros grace the outside. The shop is not all that large inside. It is a no frills store with boxes scattered about and it's a very small, dive looking store that's pretty dirty. The thing that's great about it however is that they have a huge collection of comic books for sale that date back to the 1950's. Of course some of the older ones can cost up to $30.00. I picked up one from 1976 that cost me only $3.00 and one from 1986 that only cost $2.50. They also have some posters for sale.

PROS: Good prices
CONS: Limited street parking

4 Stars: Comic Books (by Kelly C.)

This is a great comic book store. My son's both visit regularly. They have just about any comic you are looking for. If they don't they will help you get it. The selection is available, for such a little store. Everything is very organized and easy to find. They even have all of the older comics for the collectors. Their prices are reasonable on everything they sell there. I recommend them highly . They are located in the prime are of Western Ave. Stop by and see if they have your favorite titles.
