ive been to this salon a few times, and its alright... but the receptionist, Liz, is just plain rude. She puts calls on hold while she finishes her conversations with other employees which i couldnt believe when i saw it! She also talks about inappropriate things at a level that anyone in the salon can hear. Quite frankly it makes me uncomfortable. She also smokes just outside the door, so when you come in you have to walk through her smoke fog! This is also illegal since i believe you have to stand 15 or 20 feet away from the front door of a business. i dont know where they found this girl but i think there's something wrong with her. This salon would be alot better if they found a new receptionist!

The staff is GREAT! They were so friendly and so accommodating! We had a hair emergency that needed special attention and they were more than happy to save us from a near disaster! I would recommend this place to anyone, and I will be back every time I need a cut! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The owner, Meseret, has been doing my hair for several years now. She always has great ideas, and makes me look good. There is absolutely no pressure to buy products or services. When I first came to Meseret, for instance, I was coloring my hair. Rather than talk me into an expensive salon service, she actually convinced me to let my hair grow out to its natural silvery-gray.

The entire staff is helpful and friendly. The clientele is diverse - men and women, black and white, young and old, from university students to professionals. A great asset to the community.

I've had my hair styled downtown for a lot more money, but the cut's never any better than I get at 57th Street Salon. I've seen Michael and Kathleen--both of them do a great job. My husband goes as well -- we are of different ethnicities, and our hair is really different--but we both get very good cuts/styles. Very friendly place too!

I have been getting my hair cut and color treated at 57th Street Salon for almost 10 years. The owner, Meseret, has been committed to having a great hair salon since she first opened the doors in the early 90's. I have tried other places in Hyde Park but I have found this salon to be the best.

The prices are reasonable and the hair stylists have years of experience. You will find 57th Street Salon a friendly, welcoming place where you can be assured great service.

Like Hyde Park itself, 57th Street Salon has an ethnically-diverse clientele due, I assume, to the fact that the hair stylists have experience in cutting a wide range of hair textures.

This salon is convenient to the University of Chicago campus, the rest of Hyde Park, as well as the Woodlawn and South Shore neighborhoods. In addition, because it is only one block from the Metra Electric and Indiana train station at 57th Street, those who live outside of Hyde Park (and even those who live in Indiana and work in downtown Chicago) will find this place easy to get to.

So give 57th Street Salon a try and see for yourself. Meseret, Elizabeth, Skip and the rest of the crew are ready to give you a great haircut.

I have been going to 57th Street Salon for many years. My favorite hairdresser is Mezaret...I will not go to other salons or use other hairdressers. I followed her from other salons in the Hyde Park area when she opened her own salon. I have had great haircuts, body waves and highlighting, all of which turned out great. Prices are great, service is great and convenient from my house but also from Lake Shore Drive a few blocks away!

I went to this salon on the recommendation of a friend. I was told that Mezeret (sp?) was pretty good, and it was close to my apartment so I took a chance. But alas, this was the worst salon experience I have EVER had. I havea light blond, fine hair, and I frequently get lowlights to add dimension. I've never had any damage from this, so it isn't as though I was trying something new and was surprised by the results. I was very specific in talking to her, making sure she knew what I wanted, and what I wanted to avoid. I also wanted a simple trim. What I got were wide stripes of reddish lowlights (horrific color, not what we discussed at all), and overly lifted highlights (I never asked for highlighting foils, but she did it without asking or telling me). I think she forgot about me when the foils were on, because she left them on for nearly 2 hours. I actually had to go ask her what on earth was going on before she took them out. The highlighted sections were left in WAY too long, and resulted in thick broken off sections. What didn't break off became platinum, not exactly a good look with the stripey red lowlights she put in. Then she cut off 4 inches of my hair, when I had asked for a trim, and the haircut was pretty badly done on top of it. Just didn't hang right. I was completely mortified by what she did to my hair. To make it worse, she was very obnoxious, wouldn't stop talking nonsenes the whole time, and after she finished the color and saw how awful it was, she told her fellow stylists that I had picked the color out myself- a complete lie.
This was two months ago. I have been struggling to get my hair in decent shape since then. She ruined my hair and actually wanted me to pay for it.
I would never recommend anyone to go to this salon. If you live in Hyde Park, do yourself a favour and just take a bus downtown to a salon where the people know what they are doing.

I'm not sure how 57th Street Salon would stack up in a neighborhood with more salons, but for beauty-deprived Hyde Park, it's a keeper. Meseret, the owner, is an outgoing, colorful woman with an incredible memory for her patrons' likes and dislikes; she's also a terrific colorist. The prices are reasonable (I was paying around $100 for foil highlights, deep-conditioning, and a cut on long, thick hair) and the selection of products is decent. One caveat is that some of the other non-Meseret stylists may be unreliable, but all of the long-term employees seem alright.

As a hair salon in Hyde Park, they mostly cater to the University community. Here's the interesting thing - my male friends, who are Asian, have their hair cut here. Now, it's actually hard to find hair salons that cut East Asian hair well, because it tends to be floppy and thin compared to, say, Caucasian or African hair, but this place does a surprisingly decent job. Prices are moderate and they run weekly specials. Overall, not a bad place to go to for a haircut in Hyde Park.

I needed a trim so I made an appointment since this salon is close to my apartment. The stylist did an ok job with the trim, but I don't think I would have them for a major transformation. They do have an incentives program where you get a free cut after your tenth visit.

I was really nervous before this haircut, because I was taking very long hair and asking for a very short cut. I showed my stylist a picture and for the first time in my life, actually got the haircut I asked for! It looked so cute and I am so pleased with it. She also took the time to show me how to style it, since it was clearly very different from what I was used to. I highly recommend this salon.

If you live near the University of Chicago, this is where you should have your hair cut. 57th Street Salon is affordable and the service can be excellent. Important note: while the owner (Mezaret) is absolutely wonderful, some of the stylists, particularly the newer ones, are considerably less skilled. Be careful about whom you choose to cut your hair.
