If you're not in the mood to travel all the way up North to Hopleaf for your favorite Belgian specialty beers, Ukrainian Village offers you Small Bar, with a similarly impressive selection. The beer menu is its own decently-sized pamphlet, so when you get sick of your eyes drifting contemptuously over the too-tight jeans of the primarily hipster clientele, you can go back to reading the menu and drooling over your next high alcohol content selection.

Small bar in Logan Square (aka Small Small Bar) is a great location, especially in the summer when the beer garden is open. Good food, 50c wing night on Thursdays, and great Pizza and a wide selection of decent burgers and other pub grub.

The real appeal, though, is a wide selection of local, domestic, and imported beers, both in bottles and on tap. 4 rotating handles, plus a number of other standards. While not cheap, they won't break the bank either.

Being a bit of a hummus connoisseur, I have taste-tested dozens of different kinds of hummus offered by various restaurants in the city. The hummus at Small Bar beats out even the hummus at all the Greek places I've tried! It's pretty spicy, so if you don't like your food spicy you probably shouldn't try it. But with the celery and carrots that come with it, I thought the spice was just right, especially the spice to garlic to bean ratio. It was just terrific! I may have to make a special trip down to Wicker Park from Andersonville just to have the hummus again. The beer list is nice, too.

If you don't mind slow service, surly waitstaff, smelling like fried food, getting called ugly and vitriol-filled names and threatened with bodily harm by the scraggly, scrawny, skanky blond bartender and his meth-mouth side kick, then this bar is for you, because this is exactly what happened to me and my group of nine people on 4/17/08.

I admit, I made a mistake in purchasing a beer for someone who didn't have their ID on them (and quickly apologized to said bartender for my bar faux pas), but the situation absolutely did not warrant the bartender(s) to be as rude, threatening, and ugly as he was, not only to me, but to my entire group--of which none had said a word to him other than ordering their food and drinks.

If that's not your scene, I'd suggest staying far, far away from this place.

I've never been to the original Small Bar on Division, but that doesn't bother me much. The bottle list at the Logan Square location is amazing and their tap list is always decent. They also serve food until 11 pm, which is surprisingly good for bar food. Their burgers are great (especially the pulled pork, a weakness of mine), and who can say no to tater tots? Avoid the crowded weekends and visit this neighborhood jewel on a weeknight.

This place is often the starting point - or more likely the fine ending to a fun evening out. Living in the neighborhood, I have come to revere this small establishment for the come as you are attitude, fantastic beer list and decent food. I have come alone, with friends, with family, coworkers -- the lot and always had a good time. On any given night there will be a wide range of characters inside the place, but somehow it always feels comfortable. Check it out. And special thanks to Anna for being a friend and a great barkeep.
