The strengths of this school are individual attention to each child's learning style, needs and interests. learning happens in a natural way that children find interesting and meaningful. Children are respected and by this example learn to be much more respectful of others than many children in their age group. The school is beautiful, clean and well-lit. The school welcomes all kinds of children and families, has a higher level of racial diversity than most private schools and makes significant efforts to welcome an economically diverse population. As a lesbian family, an interracial family and an adoptive family, we have felt not just welcome, but understood.

We've been at Chiaravalle for 8 years and love it. The 3-6 program is terrific, and elementary has blown us away - highly qualified, dedicated, nurturing teachers, a terrific faculty-student ratio, an integrated, interesting curriculum, and an environment where children are encouraged to be curious and engaged. Our children are thriving academically and socially.

Yes this school has had turnover, but some of those that left were simply terrible and needed to get out. I can think of a few that either had no backbone to speak up for their ideas or offer school improvements. Others had no business being a role model for a child. Yes they have young teachers but they seem to work hard for the benefit of the students and while they might be facing an uphill battle, all lower/upper el and middle school teachers have returned this year. That does say something about how it is changing for the better. Can any school listen to every parents' needs and fulfill them? We have had a great history with Chiaravalle and see that many that have left have not really done much better in other schools - public or private. We think the school is doing its best and since student enrollment is not down that much there must be something that the school is doing right for most kids...I give it 4 out of 5 since they still have some room for improvement, but who doesnt?

The school tends to favor people who are enthusiastic about Montessori. They also look for potential parents that will make big donations and have already introduced their children to Montessori.
I noticed 2 different situations when the teachers saw you observing them and when they were unaware they were being observed. It was concerning.
We loved Chiaravalle when our first child went back in 2007. The toddler program was wonderful. Those 2 teachers were wonderful. They were informative, loving, and had a great connection which the children and parents felt as well.
Unfortunatley now there are so many new teachers with less experience trying to run a class and my husband and I both felt like things were very unstructured. We had a terrible time with communication and often felt dismissed.
This year we are attending Near North Montessori and look forward to a more well rounded, positive experience.

Pros: lovely building. great mission statement

Cons: no concern for security. administration and staff are tense.

Things are not always as they appear to be. Try catching the teachers interacting with the children and with eachother when they don't know you are there. It's a whole lot different when they know you are watching them which is a shame.

Chiaravalle is a terrific Montessori school. We??ve had experience with several Montessori schools, both in and out of the Chicago area, and this one is one of the best we??ve seen. True to Montessori principles, Chiaravalle teachers accept and honor children for who they are as individuals, allowing them to explore their strengths while gently guiding and challenging them through areas they??re not as familiar or comfortable with. The school does an outstanding job of communicating with parents and including them as an integral part of the school community.

I know that this school is excellent with low teacher/child ratios and with their high quality education. All my friend who send their children there are extremely happy and we are waiting for our toddler to get old enough to go there.
