Have been to Mac Arthur's several times because the food is indeed good but, more often then not, the people serving are rude and lacking customer service skills to be dealing with the public. Maybe if enough people start complaining and stop eating at Mac Arthur's, maybe management there will hire better people or train their employees how to treat its' guests. Mac Arthur's food is not that good to be insulted and treated like garbage by its' serving staff.

They are a very family environment type of place and they have some really good soulfood. So, if you dont ever fill like cooking then you can always go and grab a plate from here and fill your belly.

Mac Arthur's used to be a very good soul food experience when they first opened. They were located on the opposite side of the street. This is where I used to go every Sunday morning. Now it is so commercialized. The food on the weekends is not that go because of the crowd and they make so much in bulk, the taste is just average. On the weekdays, the food is pretty good. Their banana pudding still gets me week in the knees and their smothered pork chops are still good but their greens and macaroni and cheese are very average. I know I make better dishes at home. Edna's on Chicago Ave and Kedzie is very delicious....

MacArthur's is very popular and seems to be the most crowded on the weekends (especially Sundays). Sometimes, due to the overwhelming amount of people, you may be in a line and face a small wait...but it is all worth it when you see the plethora of food ranging from variety of meats, sides, and de-lish desserts.

I have a tendency to not eat in the street what I can effectively cook at home better. I had heard about MacArthurs from my students who are from the west side and after homecoming decided to stop by with a friend. This food was horrible. The fried chicken which appeared to be the safest entree is what I had for dinner. It was edible, but the greens and what they were passing off as mac and cheese left little to be desired. I make better peach cobbler at home...

There's nothing I like about the restaurant. The meats aren't seasoned well, and the greens taste exactly like can greens. There's nothing wrong with can greens but if you going to fix them try seasoning it more. I think everyone it's mac arthur just b/c the name is popular. When I was younger I enjoyed the food but now it's not worth my time nor money. Try Alice's on division & long. Or better yet I highly recommend Priscilla's soul food on roosevelt right of mannheim road.

MacArthur's and I go back a decade and it has been quite a love affair. From the smothered pork chops to the ribs and on to the wonderfully tasty and addictive collard greens and corn bread...this place has it all. Did I mention the best homemade mac and cheese? Cannot forget that mainstay. The place is clean and delightful and the owner is a very kind, special and gracious host. Black, white (like me), brown or yellow - if you like quality food, MacArthur's is the place to be!

I like some of the food. it all depends on when you go. the mac and cheese, greens, shortribs and smothered pork chops is off the chain and the shortribs are to die for. the parking is very bad because they are on a busy street and right next to a huge building. sometimes the staff can be silly. they have no manners and could care less. they just want you out of there. but overall, the food over rules their attitudes. the food us fres and very tasteful.

Well, it all started with a lunch date with my friend Anh. Originally, I was feeling the Mexican craving, but I decided to do a quick little search on Metromix and Citysearch, and sure enough, I happened upon the highly rated Soul Food restaurant, MacArthur's on Madison. I had quite a bit of traffic to deal with on my way to Anh's (UIC campus), and MacArthur's was another 3800 West of Ashland (1600 W). I also didn't know if this was going to be a small place, a hole in the wall, or a full fledged restaurant (I know, I should have just looked at the website pictures.) Anyways, to my delight, parking was ample (we had a late lunch at 2:30pm), and there was no one in line. I stepped right up, ordered the baked catfish (the only non-meat entree), and completed the meal with mac n'cheese and yams. All for about $9.00, the food was delicious. A bit greasy, a tad oily, but the flavors of all three items were outstanding. And it's comfort food, so shouldn't you expect a little grease and oil? The restaurant itself was clean, spacious, and had a nice outdoor patio (though we had to move inside due to construction). Service was friendly, and I will definitely be returning. I hate to let the cat out of the bag, and maybe I'm the last to think of this, but MacArthur's seems like the ideal pre-United Center destination. See you there!

Cons: Busy during peak times

Delicious Food

I am a true southern lady and the first time I ate at MacArthur's, I was truly delighted with the service and the taste of the food. It is simply delicious. To the person from New Orleans, everybody doesn't like spicy foods and there are other great cooks besides the people of New Orleans. I have been back to Chicago several times and I still enjoy the food.

Cons: The parking is limited, but if you want good food, you'll find a park

Very good food. Good service. Takes a little longer on Sunday afternoon. The red beans and rice were excellent. I have had them in New Orleans cooked in some natives homes and I must say these were as close as you could get.

Hey, I live around the corner from the resturant and the food is okay. It's average tasting food. My grandmother, who is a great cook in the soul food department, doesn't like the food. My grandma said she could make it herself and make it taste better. I'm a full-time student and also work full-time. I'm just lazy to go and cook it myself. The food is (most of the time) seasonless. The customer service are mean. The most ghettoist people you ever meet in your whole life. About 30% of the time they screw my orders up. There's allways a line. They have an ATM in the middle of the line, which is not smart.

This is the place I have introduced all my 'other soul friends' to for good food; and come back again on their own. I live in the FAR south suburbs and at times it me takes over an hour to get there but I know that I will not be disappointed with the food.

For anyone looking for great food and GENEROUS portions at a reasonable price, THIS IS THE PLACE.

I am from Louisiana where food tastes wonderful and is a celebration in your mouth. I have been trying to find good food in Chicago for over a year, so I was excited when I read great reviews online about this restaurant. When I went there, I was shocked when I saw how long the line was. I was happy at first b/c I thought everyone was there b/c it was so great. I had to stand in line for over 20 minutes. I got a smothered pork chop that was bland (it was not seasoned well), the fried chicken was fine (it's hard to mess up chicken), the dressing was extremely tasteless (like eating a mush of bread), and the macaroni was fine since it's just noodles and cheese. I was shocked that the restaurant had such rave reviews, and it turned out that it was soul food that lacked the soul. I ate b/c I was hungry and threw it away soon after. I feel sorry that people in Chicago think that this is good food because they don't know any better. Do yourself a favor and go to Louisiana to a place called Piccadilly. It is a buffet style place with the same structure and a bigger selection of food (cheap, too)...and the service is soooooo much faster! Chicago, please take it from me, this place is not a true example of how soul food should taste!!! I could find the worst restaurant in Louisiana, and it would still be better than this one!!! Words of advice: please cook with seasonings such as onions, celery, garlic, bell peppers, green onions, pepper, salt, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, basil, etc. And if you're bold, use some cajun seasoning, especially Tony Chachere's (it comes in a green canister).
To sum it up, it was not "eat 'til you pass out" good, which is the way Soul Food would be.
You can read the other reviews if you want to, but you will be truly mislead.

The mac and cheese and smothered chicken breasts changed my life! MacArthur's has great food, fast service, and is VERY cheap. Parking is a pain and you can only use cash, but those are small inconveniences (sp?) considering how good the food is and how big the portions are.

Macarthur's is the tastiest soul food you can get outside of your grandmother's kitchen! The staff is friendly, the food is delicious, and the portions are large enough to send you home stuffed. The little discussed barbecued turkey legs are moist and juicy and the sauce is to die for. The fried chicken, smothered pork chops, meatloaf and catfish are always wonderful. The side dishes are great, and the banana pudding and peach cobbler round out the meal wonderfully. I live on the southeast side, and when a Macarthur's craving hits, I will not hesitate to hop on I-290 for a bite...

The food at Macarthurs is absolutely delicious. I am a true soul food lover and hesitate to call something soul food just because they serve fried chicken. Soul Food is an attitude, a culture, a way of serving food and Macarthurs has got it right!!! I spent a year trying to find something this good in Atlanta and nothing came close. Macarthurs proves that you don't have to go down South to get the true spirit of soul food. YUMMY!

This is more of a cafeteria format, with a twist of down-home love. As you walk in, a line runs through the many choices of main entrees and side dishes. I liked looking on the wall while I was in line and seeing the celebrities and politicians who've dropped by. As far as the food, I love the fried chicken and collared greens. I am a mac and cheese fiend and MacAurthur's delivers. Be sure to try the bannana pudding too. The only complaint I have is I was too full for a second helping.
