We waited over 2 years after the death of our dog Teddy before we decided to adopt. We had been searching for over a month. We went to Spencer Kennels & were greeted by 2 of the staff. The ladies were great. We explained that we had looked at many dogs, and prefered a puppy. We have 3 boys, the eldest 7. We wanted him to grow up with the dog and although we still were upset over our dogs passing; we thought it was time to add a new family member. Although the staff was extremely helpful there seemed to be a serious "situation" on the phone. The staff was extremely courteous, but were obviously dealing with an upset coustomer on the phone. One of the employees passed the phone to the other staff and showed us a little boxer puppy. At this point the owner walked in & the other staff member explained that there wan a serious problem to addres on the phone. The staff had us go outside in a fenced area to play with the dog. After 20 min of playing outside we saw what a sweet little puppy she was. The boys loved her & she had a great disposition towards the boys. Everything was great ! We were excited about bringing her home ! The staff member told us to go inside & fill out an application. My husband went inside and was filling out the application and I stayed outside and played with my boys & the puppy. During the time we were playing the owner came out & took the dog away went inside without saying a word. I had no idea what had happened, but she looked extremely upset. I thought it was due to dealing with an upset coustomer. While my husband was inside filling out the paperwork, the kids an I had been talking about what we were going to name her & they promised they were going to sleep in their own beds with their new puppy ! I assumed we were going to be taking home our new family member. My husband walked out with a weird look on his face, I said "what is the matter ?" He said that while he was inside she was extremely rude & said " I don't think she wants us to have the dog". I asked the employee what what was the matter and she said the owner wanted to hold the dog for 3 weeks to be sure the dog was not sick. She said we have to make shure the dog did not have parvo. We live in a subdivision, but have a yard just short of 3 acres. (2 lots). The time frame was fine with me because I figured that would give us time to fence in an area for her to go potty. When we got in the car my husband looked at me and said "she is not going to give us the dog, I can just tell by her attitude". We decided to look for another dog.
We have the most beautiful little girl ! Sometimes things just work out for the best! Out of courtsey I chose to call the owner & let her know that we had Bella and would not need a dog. I just said my name and said that we had put in an application.... She quickly replied I HAVE CALLLED YOUR VET & THEY SAID YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF YOUR ANIMALS ! then she hung up on me. I immediately called back, but no answer. I called my vet extremely angry and said how dare you say that about us, we have had our pets here for years. They informed me that she had called and asked how current I was on shots for the animals I had had in their care. The vet can not give any specifics, they can just say the last date the animal had been there. They informed her that my cat had not been there since 2007 The only problem is that the cat died in 2007. The cat was 17 years old when He (Bruno) passed. (he was not put down, he died at home) We had the cat from a newborn kitten. Our dog was 16 years old when he passed 2 years ago. We have a vette (we provided the information as she asked). She did not ask about any shots that we had administered through the county. Over the last 25 years we have lost Bruno 2007' Ted 2010' & Lizzie 2011'. We still have Borden (15yrs old). and now the new puppy Bella. It is my opinion that the owner is extremly difficult to deal with, she is rude, I feel as if she may want to keep the animals for herself rather than finding good homes for them. Why is it that Pets Mart has addoptions for other shelters, but not for one less than a few miles down the street ? In our search for the right Dog we have met many people...From addoption weekends at Pets Mart, people who rescue pets in their homes, the local pounds, on-line addoption pages & craigslist we have met many people who deeply care about the animals they are trying to find homes for. I believe the owner of Spencer Kennels loves animals. I think the facility is extremely clean and the animals in her care are well cared for. As I have previously stated... we have Bella now, but I was curious if the boxer was adopted or if you are personally keeping it ?

After reading these posts, i have to wonder if people can even READ. Spencer Kennels is not Spencer animal rescue. The boarding at Spencer is fantastic. My pampered baby loves coming here and she is very picky.
As far as the Rescue goes, hey, they are keeping and loving unwanted and abused pets, not KILLING them. So they HAVE to be picky about who adopts them, or the pets end up right back there.
And, unless you didnt know, feeding and caring for about 100+ cats and dogs from all over St. Clair County gets pretty expensive. If you can do better, how about volunteering there?

Yes, I too couldn't believe how bitter the elder woman/owner was. She informed us that we were preapproved for a certain puppy so my two children and I immediately drove 25 miles to adopt him. Just as we were about to arrive, she called us on my cell phone to let us know that a couple was interested in the puppy. When we arrived, the woman seemed to be looking for any excuse possible not to let us have the puppy. In a frustrated tone she began asking me all kinds of personal questions about my self-employment, why my wife hadn't come with us, and about three times to verify how I was "going to take care of her baby [the puppy]". She also repeatedly asked if I had ever had pets that were not neutered. I informed her that most had been. I then simply asked if neutering was mandatory. She then growled, "its more than mandatory" and concluded that my answers were very worrisome and that she could not allow us to have the puppy. As we were leaving and my children on the verge of crying one of the rescue owner's cats tried to get into our car. I handed the cat to a lady that was looking for a loose dog. The rescue owner was also out there but didnt seem to care that the cat was also next to a busy street. This rescue owner is not only a poor judge of character but she seems to be pathologically projective about population control; possibly out of guilt of her own pet hoarding tendencies and irresponsibility with her many cats or the fact that she cant rescue all animals that are gassed to death every day

I just want to say, "thanks." We've recently adopted the most perfect pet for our family. He fits into our home like he's always been there. The staff at Spencer Pet Rescue was nothing less than stellar - so helpful, knowledgable and patient. I recommend this shelter to my friends and anyone who may read this review. Whether it was an application or questions asked (or answered), to me, the process was completely reasonable. So, thank you, again, for our new family member... we are so grateful to have him!

After the death of our beloved dog of 12 years, our family finally began the search for a new dog. Through petfinder.org, we saw the ad and knew which puppy we wanted. Little did we know how rude one woman could be at the shelter. She had a very bad attitude and seemed to condemn us and interrogate us just because we wanted to adopt. For a website that condemns puppy mills so heavily and encourages adoptions, the lady seemed as if she did not want the puppies to find a home. She condemned us for believing that dogs enjoy being outside and can be perfectly content in a lifestyle where they are not contained inside tiny houses. She claimed that no dog enjoys being outside. Her response was something along the lines of she??d rather have a shotgun to the head than give a dog to someone who thinks dogs enjoy being outside. In her defense, I believe that everyone has a right to an opinion, but the way she approached the situation was so rude and unprofessional that she came off as snobby and pompous. As previous pet owners, we are well aware of how to take care of a dog. I understand that she has seen hundreds of abused dogs and is wary of new owners, but that does not give her the right to judge us upon walking in the doors. As for the lack of professionalism, she called us back later that day to say our application for adoption had been accepted. In the same phone conversation, she remembered which customers we had been. After that she proceeded to judge my family and said, ??I know what you people are like.? She then said that we were declined. Being declined would have been fine if she had been smart enough not to call us and change her mind in the middle of the conversation. Needless to say, there is a reason that she works with animals all day. She is rude, unprofessional, and has no people skills. As for those puppies, God bless them. I hope that they find wonderful homes. As for the lady I am speaking of (and who I assume is reading this), God bless you for helping the animals but a better attitude would help these animals find homes. As for me, we are looking for another puppy and are staying away from Spencer??s forever. I can assure you this puppy will live a long and fulfilling life and the rescue center we adopt from will be grateful for our adoption.

Business Response:

Both humans and dogs are pack animals,we do not tend to be solitary. Domesticated dogs no longer have packs of other dogs to live with,so now need to be members of human families or packs.Furthermore, both people and dogs are den animals. This is the reason that dogs can be housebroken. Dogs want shelter in a safe, secure den-your home. Obviously dogs can be forced to live outside, alone and away from their families but to force this kind of life on a dog is one of the worst things you can do to him.Dogs trying desperately to get their human families' attention and when left outside. The rationale given by people who permanently keep their dogs outside is that they will spend time with the pet outside.Even the most well-meaning pet owner does not spend significant time outside, particularly when it is raining or cold.A bowl of food and water hastily shoved before him,a quick pat given, and his owner, his WORLD is gone, leaving the animal to spend another 22 or 23 hours alone.Although you may think that our attitude towards leaving animals outside is rude,we hold our adopters to a higher standard in the best interest of the pet.

WE have hadnothing but excellent service from SPR. They have kenneled our dogs for years now. Our dogs love it! They get so excited to be in their home away from home. The people there bend over backwards to make room for our two and has been nothing but nice. Keep up the good work!!ck

My husband and I adopted a puppy mill rescue a couple of months ago from Spencer Rescue. She is a beautiful 6 1/2 year old Yorkie. We picked her out the first day and brought our puppy yorkie to meet her the next day. The staff was extremely helpful, caring, and professional. We filled out the application, and although the staff had some additional questions and concerns, they let us take her. I was actually impressed with the extra concern that Spencer Rescue employees have regarding the adoptees of the animals. Our little Sissy had been in a cage and who knows what else for almost 6 1/2 years of her life. I would want to make sure her next owners were going to take better care of her too as she deserves the best life possible!! Thank You Spencer Rescue. Also, we found the facility to be clean and sanitary! If we didn't, we wouldn't have brought our own puppy the next day to meet Sissy.

Spencer Kennel and Pet Rescue is absolutely wonderful! I found an abandoned dog at the mall. I wanted to take him home with me, but had business trips for a few weeks. I boarded my new baby at Spencer's and they took super care of him. They took care of getting him to the vet for shots, neutering and chipping. When it was time to fly him cross country, they took care of all the arrangements. They were so kind - found a kennel and got him on the plane! They are a super agency and do fabulous work!

I have been looking for Doberman for sometime. As luck would have it... I found "Jax" at Spencer Kennels. My daughter, our Golden "Ellie" and myself went to see Jax. The staff was excellent and really helped out with the introduction. They knew the best way to get everyone familiar and everything went perfect. We've had Jax since Thanksgiving 2010 and he has been excellent - everything Spencer told us about Jax was spot on.
Great place to adopt! Great staff... with huge hearts! Go pay them a visit.

Spencer Kennel helped out our family greatly. We had a cousin pass away very sudden and he left behind a baby kitten. Nobody in the family could adopt her for one reason or another. Anyway I called Spencer and they took this baby kitten. They had her shots brought up to date, had her spayed and she is now adoptable. Thanks Spencer Kennel.

Not only did SPR take our cat when we had to give him up for adoption, they actually came to my house when I was in the hospital to pick up our dogs. We have fostered and adopted from SPR, and have kenneled with them for over 7 years now. I love the fact that my "dinner" loves to go to camp when we go out of town or have emergencies. They are well taken care of and played with. I recommend them to all of our friends and family. A few of our neighbors have ended up adopting from them. Yes they are stringent with who they let adopt, but rightfully so. They want their animals taken care of by other compassionate pet lovers! KUDOS Spencer

This place is the best, hands down! The people that work there are truely wonderful people. I have adopted two cats from them and also boarded and had my animals groomed at Spencer. I have even volunteered. I have never experienced any rudeness to anyone while I was there. In fact the times I have been there it seems there are people dropping donations and people stopping by to help. I will continue to bring my donations to them and will continue to volunteer when I can. They are 100% doing what is in the best interest of the animals. If you were turned down for an adoption it was for a good reason.

We have a wonderful dog that was originally a stray that had been at Spencer Animal Network for about 4 months when we got her four years ago. Jeanette was very up front about what we were getting into and honestly, I can still say today that she is the best dog I have EVER had out of the four dogs we had growing up. And we had great dogs but this one is just awesome. Thanks for a great dog in Lady!!!

I had been looking for a dog for a month or so, when a friend found Simba listed at Spencer Kennels. He was being fostered, and once I called to express an interest in him, everyone I dealt with, from the office person with whom I emailed to his foster "mother," bent over backwards to help me to get to meet, and then adopt, Simba. He is an older dog (10-12 years old), I drove three hours to get him, his foster mother drove nearly an hour to meet me, and I could not be happier...he's perfect in every way.
I can't recommend Spencer Kennels highly enough. They clearly love taking care of the animals they have, and were great to adopt from.

We boarded our 6 year old German Shepherd at Spencer Kennel and had a great experience. He stayed for several days, and when we picked him up he was relaxed and happy. We found the staff to be friendly, and they all seem to truly enjoy what they do. Additionally, I have volunteered a small amount of time to the Spencer Rescue, and I wish I could help 24/7! The staff and volunteers are dedicated to the well being of dogs and cats. I have read many of the reviews about the rescue organization, and I can only say that if someone encountered any rudeness from a staff member, keep this in mind: This team has dealt with puppies who have been thrown from cars, litters of kittens left on their doorstep, and pregnant cats locked in car trunks. If I had to deal with that kind of HORRID behavior coming from human beings, I'd be in a constant state of high alert. Remember...for every one or two times that they MAY have been short with a customer, there have been dozens of incidents where they have been pleasant and professional. I'd be stressed too if I had to deal with the constant displays of animal cruelty they endure daily.

I do some fostering for them and they are so caring and serious about finding the right home for the animals in their care. They are often trying to do more with less because there are so many in need. They are clean and work over time to make sure the kennel is the best it can be.

I always leave my dog here when I go on vacation or have company. They treat her like royalty and I even get updates, occaisionally! The facility is clean and the animals are well-groomed...it doesn't smell like a kennel. They use high-quality dog beds. The staff is friendly, courteous, and very accomodating. They have a robust Facebook page. The staff is selective in who they allow to adopt animals. If they do not feel that the family is a good match, they care enough to say no. They have lots of people that try to dump their animals to avoid the responsibility of pet ownership--they do all they can to ensure these animals receive a better home than they were provided previously.

I highly recommend this kennel/rescue. I started using this facility after my vet confirmed a case of kennel cough brought on by a stay at Country Estates. (He said that kennel is notorious for bordatella infections.) I have never had a problem with kennel cough or fleas using this facility.

I am giving all five stars because I love what Spencer Stands for. I am also giving all five stars because I did adopt my dog Dexter from Spencer. What I would give 1 star for is the lady that works during the day. The later shift lady and guy were amazing to work with and so friendly and helpful. As for the day shift lady she was SO rude. If not for the love of the dog that I met I would have never come back and never have known that the one lady that lacks customer service is just one bad apple. The rest of the staff is amazing.

Wow! Thats all I can say! I called them over the phone and the lady was very very rude! I am a adult as well so us adults should not be talked to rudely and disrespectfully. She asked "whats the point of you calling?" And I said "because I need help obviously" That was after the fact I wouldn't be polite back to her. I will never ever recommended this place to anyone! She seems like she hates her job and doesn't care about anyone or anything. She should not be at thefront desk either wether she is the owner or not. Ive read that people walked away or changed their minds because of her. Idon't blame them I would also. Such an ignorant, unfriendly, bitter, old lady. She needs to quit her own job!

Do not listen to any of the terrible reviews!!!!!! This place is amazing.
They exercise the animals and really care about their animals. We got a dog there and he was strong, shiny, energetic a real lover. The others we looked at were all in top condition as well. As for the smells as you know animals stink (to humans) already and there are lots of them. Even if you are a smellaphobe (like me) deal with it. As for the "rude" lady she is trying to make sure the pets are happy and healthy. She is the owner and she wants to make sure your purposes for adopting are not faulty.
ADOPT FROM HERE!!!!! Go online and search puppy mills pics and they are horrific. ADOPT DON"T SHOP!!!! I loved Spencer and you will to!!!

We got a dog from there about a year ago. It was the greatest thing I have ever done for my son. Cain (bull terrier) is a wonderful dog, who has brought so much joy to us. The staff help us find the right dog for us. We have stopped by to see them in the past year and they are so happy to see Cain is with the right family.
I too had to move from our house but looked for about 3 mths to find a place that would let me have Cain. He is a part of the family and would never think about moving without him.

Rescued an animal that was found in poor shape. Brought it to spencers. When going back to check on the dog the older lady at the front desk was ridiculously rude. Why would you put someone with no customer service skills as the first point of contact?

If you are looking for an affordable kennel that will take great care of your pet, then Spencer Kennels is what you want. Their rates for board and baths are the best you will find. Everyone I have had the opportunity of talking with there seems to genuinely care for animals and their well-being. Anytime our pit/boxer/lab mix needs to be boarded they are the first place we call.

For those of you upset with their selectiveness regarding pet adoptions, remember that they are only trying to be advocates for responsible pet ownership and are wanting to make sure that their animals are going to loving, caring homes and won't end up on the street or back in a shelter.

I read the reviews about Spencer Kennels. I think the worst part of the reviews is that it is obvious that someone had a bad experience at the kennel. For whatever reason. But, it appears to be no more than the usual war between a rescue group and a disgruntled person. What I know about Spencers is from being stopped outside on the road in a construction zone. The building was in a nice location. The building and the parking lot were clean and well maintained. There were a lot of people coming and going. Dogs on leashes. Everyone appeared happy. I will be stopping by to see the inside next week. I hope they will be able to help me place a collie whose owner past away last week. I will keep you posted about the staff and the inside of the building. I expect that it will be as nice inside as outside. My final thought -- for those that are complaining -- are you willing to do the work that it takes to run a program like this? Or, are you disgruntled, because you did not get your way? Think before you speak -- it is a good practice. You have had your say, now drop it. Since, Spencer's is not the only adoption facility out there, find some place that makes you happy and go there.
Final thought from my Airedale "Arthur". After spending about $500.00 at the vet I found that Demodex mange (mites) although not cureable, is manageable. Demotox mange is denoted for red streaks so it is often refered to as red line mange. This will also help with other types of mange For $10.00 Add flax seed oil and cod liver oil to your dogs diet to help increase immune system (dog food does not have enough Omega for most breeds). Iver-on for about $14.00 Apply with cotton ball or tissue (use on hot spots) For $25.00 IVERMEC (a life time supply) injectable for cattle. 1cc mixed with 9 cc of sterile water. Then 1cc per 44/lbs of body weight given oral for cats or dogs apx every 6 months. (This will also take care of ear mites, ringworm, roundworms & provide some protection against heart worms). Bathe animal in Dawn dish soap (Dawn kills fleas and mites) take caution you will make mites mad and they will attack you. Rinse with baking soda rubbed in to animal and then use diluted vinegar. (smell will be gone). Wash bedding in scalding hot water once a week. High tempatures kill mites. Good luck -- no vet req'd -- just a farm and home store and a $50.00 investment. Final thought, most of the time Demodex mange in a shelter animal would be hard to know about in advance, since the dam would not be recorded. One last expense if it has gotten this far - $20.00 for a sulfer based eye ointment - order on the internet. Good luck! And, happy savings. Arthur the Airedale.....is enjoying life again.

I am a volunter at the kennel. Please remember that the staff is just trying to protect the animals. We get animals brought in daily that have been abused, neglected, abandoned. People bring in animals that have been in their familyl for years and just don't want to take care of them anymore. They are a no kill shelter because every animal deserves a chance. Most are very loving and just don't understand why they have been abandoned. Please don't judge the staff, your best friend may just be behind the doors. I have 5 rescue dogs and they have made our lives so much more enjoyable. I could imagine life without them. The dogs are their main priority.

This review is about Spencer Pet Rescue and not the Kennel. We inquired about adopting a dog from their facility. We completed an application on Sunday and emailed it to their office. We were then called on Tuesday afternoon and told we were approved to adopt her and when could we come to meet her. I told the lady on the phone we would be there on Wednesday afternoon with our dog to meet her. When we arrived Wednesday afternoon we were told that they had already adopted her out. Why do you call someone and tell them they have been approved and when they state they will be in the next day turn around and adopt them out? Also the facility smelled AWFUL! Just an all around bad experience and I will never attempt to work with this shelter again.

I tried to submit a review earlier and had a computer issue, excuse if this is duplicated. My 5 & 8 yr old daughters went to Spencer to see about adopting a kitten. The woman who "helped" us was rude, condemned us for having an outside dog, drilled my children about whether they would take care of a cat, and chastised me for wanting a cat when I'm allergic. We have had several labs in the past that have lived well beyond their expected lifespan, I believe because they are primarily outside dogs and get a TON of exercise. I wouldn't be adopting an animal unless I felt my kids were ready to take care of it. My allergies are well under control with medicine, which I take all year round because of the St Louis weather. I told this woman all of these things and she was still extremely rude and condescending to me. I will never go back there and would not even consider boarding our dogs with them, primarily because of this treatment. I understand that this review is for the kennel and not the rescue, but they're both housed in the same building and volunteer or not, common courtesy should be exhibited no matter which business a person is representing. As of a week later I have not had a response to my application and we found a cat elsewhere. No wonder shelters are so crowded, if they only let perfect people just like them adopt.

Michelle P. Let's review. Person wants a kitten. 1. allergic 2. Will rely on a 5 year old and 8 year old to care for it. 3. Leaves a small dachsund mix outside in the heat and cold. Enough said.

We absolutely LOVE Spencer Kennels. We adopted our puppy, a puppy mill rescue, a little over a year ago and board her with Spencer anytime we have to go out of town. The staff is very loving and caring. They are friendly, helpful, and have a real passion for the animals they care for. I know my dog is in great hands and that she gets a lot of extra special attention when she comes for a visit. She is always excited to be there! I would highly recommend Spencer Kennels to anyone for adoption or boarding.

To the person that does not recommend this kennel....it is by NO means the animals fault!!! For you to advise others to not visit this kennel is irresponsible , rude and just plain mean. ALL animals need love and good homes....do not judge the staff, most of which are volunteers, for being over protective of these precious creatures. Do you not realize how bad animal abuse, neglect and dog fighting are in this day and age...and especially in the Midwest, where this kennel is located? Your comment is irresponsible....that is like blaming children for their parents behavior. BTW, I have taken my 2 precious dogs to board there and have been incredibly pleased. I also adopted a beautiful Dogue De Bordeaux 1 1/2 y/o that had been abused, neglected and found starving, freezing and had mange so bad he had open sores on his back...not to mention bite marks form possible dog fighting. This kennel gave him another change and now he is thriving as one of our precious family members....shame on you for not giving other animals this chance and encouraging others to skip such a beautiful and rewarding experience!!!!!!!!!!

I really like it here. It is fun to visit and pet the animals. I am too young to work at the shelter but they let me visit and pet the cats and dogs that are around. I had a birthday party with my friends and they all donated gifts to the animals. Then I took them up to Spencer Kennel and gave it all to them. All the people that work there were really nice to me. I really want to adopt another dog if my mom will let me.

While visiting the adoption kennel a couple weeks ago, I witnessed some rude behavior. The older female staff member was particualy short with a customer. Her tone was very disrespectful. I couldn't believe she thought she had the right to talk to someone like that. I walked out....
Seems like she is a very angry bitter woman. There is no excuse to treat customers in a disrespectful manner, no matter what their opinion is of the customer. Would not recommend!

I have boarded my dogs there a couple times this year and have had nothing but WONDERFUL service from the kennel staff. They treated my dogs like they are their own. As far as the Pet Rescue side, I adopted a dog from them last summer and they were great. I know they deal with a lot of ignorant people who come in looking for dogs to breed with their dogs and this is ridiculous with all of the already unwanted dogs out there. I go up and give towels to donate occasionally and have witnessed adoptions, (as well as adopting from them last year.) The small group of volunteers there are always very friendly and seem very laid back....I can't even imagine anyone being rude. They have been nothing but wonderful from what I have seen.

After reading the other reviews about the rude customer service, I tried to give the (adoption side of the kennel) the benefit of the doubt. My initial impression was that the staff was non attentive. Finally, when I did speak with someone she started questioning me about the dog we currently own. I told her that we had not spayed her YET, but were planning to soon. Her total attitude changed after that, suddenly I was Satan's Spawn! she said they would not let us adopt unless she was spayed. This is perfectly understandable and I agreed since I was planning on it anyway.
I was interested in a certain cat and wanted to fill out an application. I was told I could not because of my dog. She referred me to the "manager" who (upon hearing about my dog) practically jumped over the counter and interegated me! This women totally treated me like I was a criminal running a puppy mill! the other two staff members chimed in with their opinions as well. I told them that they were completely rude and there no reason for their behavior. I felt totally violated, I have never been treated so rudely!
I understand they see alot of abused animals that come from irresponssible owners and puppy mills etc...and their is alot of frustration with that. However, it is unfair to put a label on someone and treat them so rudely because they assume that they fit that mold. I will never return and I recommend everyone to AVOID THIS PLACE!

Had dog in kennel 10 days and he was in good shape when picked up. Rates are reasonable and it's obvious the staff truely cares for pets. My dog was still wet from a bath I had requested, (at low price I might add), at the pickup time and they did their best make him ready. (He would "attack" the hair dryer making it difficult to dry him off). The Kennel waived the cost of the bath due my dog not being ready which was not really their fault. That's going beyond!!

This seemed like a wonderful place, read the reviews, was surprised as well about the "rude staff" comments. After visiting a few times, was shocked with the rude attitude and comments from one woman at Spencer. There are ways to talk to people when you are in business, you do not have to be condescending and insulting to them because your opinion is different. It takes effort to be nice and try to build a good reputation for your business, but you dont earn respect by being rude. Based on the insulting comments and very rude attitude by this one woman, I would never do business (adopting or boarding) with Spencer. I will also be sure to remind my friends to avoid this business "at all costs" as stated by the previous poster.

Business Response:

Michelle Parker Laura M. If you could please address any issues with a staff with me so that I can take care of the problem immediately. I am unsure if this is a volunteer for the Rescue or an Employee of the Kennel. Please keep in mind that Spencer Kennel and Spencer Pet Rescue are two different entities and this listing is for Spencer Kennel. Either way, the situation will be addressed immediately. Please ask for me personally and I will be more than happy to help you.

I am writting in response to the last posting.... did you purchase an extended warranty? We also adopted a dog from Spencers and he has behavior problems as do alot of stay pets. I don't expect them to pay for the trainer. Who adopts a pet and doesn't expect a cost to be associated?

I have had a terrible experience with Spencer Kennels. My husband and I adopted a puppy from them and within the first month found out that he has demodex mange which is a condition that puppies can only get from their mothers. I called the Kennel and the women that answered the phone said that I would have to take him to a vet, and gave me some numbers of local vets. I took him to the vet and found out his condition and footed a vet bill for close to 250 dollars. Well I called the kennel and the woman that answered that time said that I should have just brought him there. I informed her that the other woman advised me otherwise. She said that she would have to see the bill and then let me know. I faxed her the bill and she said that she would call me and then she didn't follow up. After incessant calling, she finally said that they would forward me the money for the bill. A week later, still no check. I called and she said that they didn't have money to pay the full amount at that time, that they would forward me what they could until they reimbursed me completely. A week later, still nothing. Called again and still have heard nothing. I love our dog, but we do not have the money to keep following up with the treatments recommended by the vet, which are every two weeks for three months. I am very disappointed by the entire situation and do not suggest that you adopt from there unless you are ready to deal with any problems that you may have on your own.

Business Response:

Michelle Parker Jen B., Spencer Pet Rescue adopts approximately 900 animals per year. Very rarely do we come in contact with a dog that experiences such health problems as yours did. We do guarantee the health of all of our animals. As a volunteer organization we are also sometimes short staffed and overworked. I apologize for any inconvenience associated with your reimbursement of your vet bill or with your dog. Please keep in mind that 99.9% of our adoptions are by very happy adoptees and we do not want any of our families unhappy. Some of the pets we take in come from abusive and neglected homes and can suffer health problems due to that. We understand your frustration. I also want to point out that Spencer Kennel and Spencer Pet Rescue are two different entities and this listing is for Spencer Kennel. If you should need any further assistance, please feel free to call me personally. Michelle Parker

I don't think the staff is rude at all. I adopted a westie from them and they were nothing but helpful. If you adopt an animal it is your responsibility to train the animal and be patient. If they were frustrated with you, I can understand. Too many people adopt pets without being fully committed 100%. If you were expecting a baby, you probably shouldn't have adopted an animal until after you had the baby.

I am surprised to read that someone thought the staff at Spencer was rude. They are always friendly and send our dog home w/a little bag of milk bones around the holidays. When we call to schedule availability, they remember us before I say Libby's full name, Libby is our dog. We maybe kennel her 10 times a year.
Anyway, the kennel is a good size, they are attentive and I've never experienced rudeness there.
I highly recommend Spencer Kennels.

We had searched for the perfect cat, and refused to get a kitten because we felt sorry for the older cats who were neglected and abandoned at shelters, so we took home a female calico from a different shelter named Open Door. Soon after we brought her home we noticed that she would urinate on random items in our household. I feared that it was urinary tract infection and took her to visit the vet twice, both times she was free from infection. We tried pheromones, increasing the number of litter boxes, changing the litter frequently, isolation with her litter box (two weeks is a horrible amount of time to be locked in solitary confinement) after that we tried locking her in a room with the litterbox only at bedtime to prevent her doing it while we sleep. She is *still* doing it. (We have a baby on the way, and I can't have her urinating in the crib or on the baby's clothes.)
When I called this shelter to see if they had an available kennel for her, I was berated. I was told that I hadn't tried hard enough or hadn't been doing it right! The lady on the phone told me that I was at fault for her urinating everywhere! By the time I had gotten off of the phone I was in tears.
We don't want to get rid of her, we love every pet dearly. The only reason that we called this shelter is because the one that we got her from is an hour away. Definately a long trip for the kids. I'll never call nor visit this animal shelter in the future. We were seeking help, not searching for someone to give us a difficult time.

This kennel has been around for awhile, and is always wonderful. The building itself is big and they have a ton of dog runs for larger dogs. They also have a groomer on site and the staff take the animals out frequently for walks and play time. The prices are reasonable and we have never had a hard time getting our pets in for boarding even at the last minute.
