I've gone to Mirai for a special sushi fix for about a decade. It was always more expensive, but worth it. No longer. What a disappointment when I took a special out-of-town visitor there last weekend! The menuwas so limited, and lots of those were cooked. Microscopic servings that make Charlie Trotters' servings look huge. The noise level was still bad, both upstairs and down, even though fewer diners were there on a Sat night. Was I the last to learn Mirai has gone downhill?

I was taken to Mirai for my birthday last night and was quite excited to finally give this highly rated sushi place a try!
Unfortunately, it was an extremely disappointing experience.

Our visit started off on the wrong foot. We arrived at the restaurant and the host was so hurried, he did not even make eye contact while greeting us and taking us to our table. It was as if we were interrupting him.

We started with the tuna/salmon/white fish carpaccio which was so bland despite the capers. Had a seaweed salad which was standard. We also ordered the Unagi maki mono & a veggie maki...surprisingly both of these rolls lacked flavor. We were so disappointed we didn't bother trying anything else. Didn't even stay for a birthday dessert.
The only positive aspect was that our server was very personable and attentive.
Maybe it was an off night, but I will never go back there again. There are much better (and less expensive) sushi places in the city.

My friend and I were here a few weeks back and I've neglected to write a review until now.

We had a fabulous time. The service was top notch, the wine list had good selections and the sushi was fantastic. Although the menu is more limited than you would find at some other places, each of the choices are delicious. In fact, my friend and I tried every one of the Chef Selections and loved them....so much so that we actually re-ordered a couple of them.

As noted by another reviewer, they suggest not using soy sauce and they're exactly right. The flavors are perfect just as they are.

Highly recommended!

We heard that Marai was a great sushi spot and is close to us so we went for our first anniversary. (I made a note of this in the reservation and there was ZERO acknowledgment that I had informed them of this fact.) It's very noisy, brightly lit, and the tables are uber-close to each other. Service was fine, except for the fact that the server kept reaching in front of my wife to point at items on the menu, in the "closed" position, that is with his elbow in her face and chest, instead of the proper "open" position. My wife had to visibly lean back from his elbow being in her personal space. Limited selection of maki rolls and they were all more expensive. Bottom line, this place doesn't hold a candle to Coast as far as food, price or ambiance. Turn down the f*&%ing lights! Plus, Coast is BYOB!

In short, the sushi is fantastic. Take to heart when the waiter tells you "the chef recommends using NO soy sauce." The beauty in Mirai's sushi is not the freshness of the fish (though it is a plus), it is in the singular uniqueness of the sauces that accompany the fish. You will not be disappointed if you order the following:
1.Bin Cho (tuna salad)
2.Spiny mono roll (octopus+tuna)
3.Tuna Tuna Salmon
4.Kani Nigiri ? baked king crab (2 pcs per order)
5.Special Zuke
6.Gyoza Ravioli

I've been 10-12 times over the past two years and have still not OD'd on it...happy eating!

After researching just about every sushi place in Chicago, we settled on Mirai for my boyfriends birthday. We had a reservation for Friday night for the second floor and were sat within seconds of us arriving. The service was very prompt and they bring your sushi picks in rounds instead of all at once which was perfect. Definitely kept us from ordering too much. We ended up putting an additional order in and that came out just as fast. The best tuna sashimi we've ever had. My only complaint would be how noisy it was, it seemed the same on the first floor. Although the second floor had a nice lounge type atmosphere. A little on the pricey side, but completely worth it. The specialty martinis were great too!

The food and atmosphere is good at Mirai but I think it's time to take our business elsewhere. Friends gave us a generous gift certificate to Mirai knowing our affinity for the restaurant. Unfortunately, we did not use the certificate within the one year term. Almost every restaurant I know extends gift certificates..except Mirai. Notwithstanding our polite inquiries to the manager, the rebuttal was absolute...they simply would not accept the gift certificate. We frequented Mirai often but no more...they may have gotten paid on our gift certificate but have lost a customer.

Mirai is quite simply the best sushi in Chicago. Coming from San Francisco, I was afraid I would not find comparable sushi here, but I was wrong. I have also been to a lot of sushi places here, and none come close to being as good. Try the fatty tuna. Oh my gosh, it's like buttah.

How often do you go to a ?Trendy? spot only to have the atmosphere far outshine the food? It happens to me a lot ? but not here. This is a really cool, upscale trendy joint, and the sushi is fan-friggin-tastic. I?d highly recommend being adventurous here, as it is almost impossible to get something that isn?t amazing. Definitely justifies its price tag (which can be hefty if you can throw back some fish, like me). Creative and unique rolls with perfectly complimented nigiri. Service can be really slow on the weekends, but the atmosphere makes it tolerable. If you love sushi, you gotta try Mirai.

We've gone to Mirai on a number of special occasions & this place never disappoints. By far the best sushi in Bucktown, if not the city. Service has always been excellent. We love the spicy tuna rolls & the dumplings appetizer. Great drinks & a fun atmosphere for special date nights & evenings out with friends.

You always here of those restaurants that have that real snobby attitude and poor service, and this is definitely not one of them. The staff has always been great and the food is AMAZING. The cocktails are great too. A wonderful place to get some great sushi and enjoy your surroundings.

i am an absolute sushi conosseiur, and this place is amazing sushi. The wasabi is not horseradish wasabi, it's real wasabi from japan, so it's really not too spicy. I will definitely retur hundreds of times because this is one of the best sushi placs in the city. Also... do not listen to the other part becuase it's great for kids! and romantic!

Love it! I'm new to eating sushi, I went to Mirai and everything we ordered was a little party in our mouths, the sauces and grade of meat are perfection! Since the first time dining there, I have gone back 2 times in the past month....and am planning a party in their lounge area. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Didn't go to Mirai in a while, went last Saturday with 7 people. The food was amazing, I still love the choices they're having for a while now, like the Kani Nagiri and the monk fish foie gras, but was also surprised by new "inventions". Well worth the prices!

came here on a saturday night with 3 friends...we all had great expectations of the sushi since it was highly recommended by citysearch and locals.
we were definitely not disappointed!
the sushi was so fresh and buttery, and though the sushi chefs are very traditional, the menu was inventive.
our waiter was somewhat slow, but he was very knowledgeable of the menu and gave us great recommendations.
we ordered appetizers, entrees, drinks and two desserts (to share) and only paid about $35 each!
overall, i'd highly recommend this place - everything from the appetizers and entree's to the desserts and drinks were a transporting experience.

We live in the neighborhood and always on the hunt for good sushi. We found Mirai and really love the quality of the fish, the cuts are perfect and the prepared dishes (Udon) are fantastic. The chefs are personable when you dine at the sushi bar-great food. However, I dont get the staff. I stood waiting at the hostess stand for 5 minutes and when the Host came over he completely ignored me and asked the couple behind me how could he assist. He made a completely wrong assumption, but moreover, didnt even inquire if I were OK-needsless to say not even an acknowledgement. Even the numerous wait staff who walked past never acknoledged me or made mention that someone would be right over. Please, management at Morai, keep your staff focused on quality of service and friendliness (smiling would help?). The food is great-but nothing warrants the attitude.

I am a HUGE sushi lover and thoroughly enjoy going out for a nice meal.
My fiance and I have hear good things about Mirai Sushi but unfortunatly the service and food were NOT acceptable.
The hostes were all out to lunch and the waitress... was beyond RUDE and unhelpful.
I have never been to a restaurant where i could NOT wait to leave!
I can't believe there was so many good reviews for this place??!!
There are SO many other GOOD FRIENDLY true japanese sushi restaurants you should try before coming here!!

I went to Mirai on a packed Saturaday night after waiting in line at RA for an hour. I'm glad RA was packed because this place is amazing. The food was incredible and everyone was so nice. This is my new spot for sushi, although I wish they had more traditional rolls, the chef specials are quite good.

We were seated promptly for a 6:30pm, party of two reservation. This is truly one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever dined at. This place is what should be considered as a "Sushi Couture" restaurant. You can't come to this restaurant expecting to get full. If you have that in mind, then there are plenty of other cheap sushi places you can go to.
May I suggest the Kani Nigri (King Crab), 2 pcs @ $7.00, the Spicy Mono Maki @ $15.00/roll, the tuna/whitefish combination @ $40.00, the Sakana Capaccio (salmon, octopus, and whitefish combination) @ $11.00, and the Ebi Togarashi (shrimp) @ $10.00. Of course, their nigiri sushi/sashimi is wonerful as well . Try Mirugai (giant clam) and Botan Ebi (sweet shrimp). Martinis are also delicious. My favorite is the Trouble Maker. In order to join your maxium dinning experience here. I suggest at least $80-100 per person.

I've been hearing Mirai has outstanding sushi for such a long time, and I finally visited it last night. Sushi is fresh but choices are limited. Menu is not organized, and not many items to choose from. Other than sushi, food is just okay. Service is not attractive. Our server was totally losing control by a couple tables seated at the same time. Overall, I don't think the price is worth the food quality, portion, and service.

Sushi was very excellent here. Top quality and fresh. Nigiri and Sashimi were superb. Standard makis (California, spicy tuna, etc) were above average. Specialty Maki was excellent. The rest of the food was just a bit above average, (not on the same level as the sushi). Not as wide variety of sushi (good selection of tuna though). Service was solid. Our waiter was a little hurried and spread thin across his other tables, but he was very helpful and knowledgeable. 2 drinks, 1 specialty maki, 2 standard makis, assortment nigiri plate, 1 order of nigiri, 1 order of sashimi (2 pieces), and an expensive appetizer was $72 (before tip and tax). It was enough food for 2, but we werent FULL. Price was par with any other restaurant of this type. The decor was simple, clean and hip. Young, casual, social crowd. Good restaurant for 2-4 people.

I was there with my fiance and his parents one Sunday evening, and we were dissapointed with the service we recieved from our server. I work in one of the best restaurants in the city, so I know the standards of service. She wasn't very accomodating and seemed annoyed by our requests. I wanted a certain salad that I know the chef would be able to do. The least she could have done was ask if he could do it, if not, then fine. I can live without it. Besides that, the food was excellent, one of the freshest sushi I ever had. Many Many Compliments to the chef!!!

Everything we ordered was excellent. Our waiter gave great recommendations. The mango mochi cake was so delicious we ordered a coffee one as well. Our bill was under 100 dollars with out liquor and we had a very filling dinner. GO TO MIRAI!!!

4 of us went for dinner with reservations at 9:30. They were getting our table ready, so we went to the bar. 1 drink later, we ask the hostess how long. (Very Snottily) "we don't know, it'll be whenever the next table opens up". As we're waiting, we see there's a 6 top open. 2 drinks later, we (again) ask a hostess. Finally, at 10:30pm we're seated downstairs. The 6 top is STILL open as we make our way to the other table. They could have easily split the 6 top apart into a 4 top and 2 top- but the did not. On top of the long wait for our table, we had a long wait for our server. Once we placed the order, they neglected to bring all of our items. There are too many other places to go in Chicago to waste your time on this joint.

The menu of specials was phenomenal. Not just your average sushi menu - creative and interesting. It reminded me of places I've frequented in LA. The service, moreover, was exceptional. Our waiter didn't steer us wrong at all during the meal. His wine selection was perfect; his roll choices were great; and his dessert suggestion was supreme. All in all a great experience.

Pros: Creative, Fun, Great service

Cons: Crowded

.

The sushi, although non-traditional, is very good. The service is always inconsistant. The time it takes to get your dishes varies widely and we and others around us were given dishes that we didn't order.

Let's take a Yes/No quiz.
Do you enjoy consistently fresh and delicious sushi?
Do you like to mingle with hip, good looking people?
Do you like a contemporary, lounge atmosphere with a solid bar?
If you answered Yes to the following, Mirai may be the place for you. The maki is inventive, the nigiri is fresh but lacking in proportion and the sake selection is solid. Since cost is always a factor, it's not the greatest value especially if you drink and eat like I do! Come prepared to drop some bills! All in all, it's a great place to pre-game.

Mirai pretty much perfected the concept of arrogant and overrated. The food here was pretty good, but only average at best. The whole place exudes an obsessive "hip," not to mention extremely overppriced style, over substance. I'll give the sushi credit; it was tasty and fresh, if overpriced, but the other items on the menu were flat out gross. Beware of the soups and hot noodle dishes in particular: eat then quickly or else they'll congeal to the texture of glue.

You want sushi better than Mirai's? Fly to Japan, and even then, I bet it's pretty close. Fun, "clubby" atmosphere, wear lots of black and you'll fit right in. The staff is incredibly knowledgable and friendly, and they make excellent recommendations. If you want a culinary experience in the true spirit of Japanese cuisine, this is the place to go.

If you're looking for fresh sushi, great drinks (try a Red One or Sake Martini), and a lively environment, look no further - Mirai Sushi is the ticket! I've had sushi all around the country - from Seattle to New York - and Mirai delivers!
