I am in the restaurant business in Lincoln Park. I have dined at your restaurant twice but it was my girlfriend's first time. I have not been there in a great number of years. A buddy of mine who is a country club chef had a wonderful experience there a couple of years ago. So, I wanted quality mexican food and margaritas and you came to mind. Server made a wonderful margarita recommendation and your food was also very good. Look forward to coming back. Keep up the great work!
Awesome food and drink, well above average. Even the standbys such as Stuffed Jalapenos take on an elevated approach at Salpicon while remaining approachable. This is Modernist Cuisine but an elevated and creative approach to some traditional favorites as well as exciting new dishes.
We recently moved from San Diego, CA to Chicago, IL. We now live across the street from Salpicon. We are so glad we did! We ordered the 7 course chef selection and 2 bottles of Pinot Noir. The waiter was very courteous and explained each course to us. It's great to finally find a mexican restaurant in Chicago that tastes as if you were actually dining elegantly in Mexico. And trust us, we used to live 30 minutes from Mexico and good Mexican food. Thank you again for the wonderful dining experience. We will be back.
We travel from Des Moines, IA to Chicago about 5 times per year for theatre and combine these trips with fine dining in Chicago. Salpicon, we've know about for years. This was a return visit distanced by 20+ yrs from the last. The experience was memorable and delightful. We have a handful of restaurants that we visit along the North Avenue corridor near Steppenwolf and along Division and in the river North area. We usually wait to see what we feel like eating after the performance. This time it was Salpicon, but it won't be the last time.
I found Salpicon way back in 96 when I went to Frontera Grill and was told I had to wait 1.5 hours to be seated. We then walked out rather disappointed and we were overheard by a member of the staff discussing where we would go... very quietly we were instructed to try Salpicon and given the address and off we went. We didn't have to wait to be seated when we arrived and the food was incredible... I have sent friends, entertained customers and always leave with happy people. I go back there every visit to Chicago.
We have ordered the special menu of Salpicon that is roasted butternut squash soup garnished with smoky chile chipotle and caramelized pumpkin seeds. The food was above expectations. The service was great. We also had a good chicken dishes. This could be a Best Mexican Restaurant in Chicago. This was a very good place. Food was generally pretty good, and they were flexible about substituting my sides. Service was fine; friendly but the timing of the courses was off. Good chicken dishes. Best place to get Mexican style food at Chicago.
They have a varied menu, great food and atmosphere. In addition, live music on some nights. Highly recommended. This should be one of the top Mexican restaurant in Chicago. We have ordered A poblano chile stuffed with huitlacoche they have served in a roasted poblano cream sauce and an ancho chile filled with potatoe. It is one of the Nice Mexican Restaurant in Chicago. It was so good, reasonable prices, and GREAT service! You must try the burger as it was one of the best I've ever had! Their Grilled Fish with Salsa Fresca Recipe is one of the best I have ever had and if they have the clam special, don't miss it! This is the great Mexican restaurant in Chicago.
This was no exception to the rule. Decor was warm, friendly, inviting...just made you want to be there. Enjoyed a New Year's Day dinner at Salpicon. Everyone in our party of four enjoyed the good food, reasonable prices, and attentive service. We have ordered a rich vegetable stock with tomatoes and epazote soup and it was good. I have never seen a best restaurant in Chicago. When I return to Chicago, I'll make sure to dine at Salpicon. It is romantic, delicious, and a place we will come back to again and again. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and very efficient. I would eat here at least once a week if I lived in town. Highly recommend it!
The menu is inventive and the food is very, very good. The staffs have been carefully chosen and rigorously trained. We had a best meal at Chicago with Salpicon. They serve huge portions so you could easily share on entree and the prices are very reasonable. We had a nice dinner here. The food was great and the prices are reasonable for such a nice spot. The staff is friendly and eager to please. I have not had a bad meal in Chicago for the number of years I have lived here.
The food is amazing; I personally loved the Fresh baby spinach salad with goat cheese. yummy chicken dinner and super vegetables! Prices are very reasonable. The wait staff was great, but the chefs stole the show. It was a great Mexican restaurant at Chicago. The staff was fabulous and the food even better. I saw several couples, apparently a new friendship on their first date, so apparently it is popular to impress the single crowd. I had a Chopped Chicken salad that had a peanut sauce. I ate it all, it was great!
Been there many times. The food, atmosphere and drinks are great! I go to Salpicon every time I visit Chicago. Should really have a reservation on Sundays for Brunch menu. Great wine, great cornbread, homemade soups. This was a fantastic restaurant in Chicago; we were sat near the jazz quartet who along with the great food and wine made it an amazing evening. Also we had Italy's white wine and it was great. The restaurant is filled with both tourist and local clients, either for drink and dinner at the bar or a sit down meal. All of our meals were excellent, we had fun, the music was great and our waitress was excellent. We will definitely return! I have never had a bad meal here. I have never had a waiter or waitress who was not fully informed of the menu choices and pleasant and welcoming.
I will be organizing to go back regarding meal about my own big day and also verify these out there. Program has been sort if you ask me. Yummy foods, cost-effective value, simply by lunchtime travelled far better inside equally and also top quality and also expense smart.
You may not understand the actual menus is within right here as well as every thing all of us purchased had been scrumptious! The actual wines checklist is of interest as well as substantially listed. France malbec is a great mixture with this dinner. We had been cautious concerning the checklist associated with tequilas however the waiters understood how to approach this. Ill have made the decision to possess a obtain as well as my personal buddies only at that location.
Hors d'oeuvers will be in very good selection much like the $7, reasonably priced along with tastier way too... along with Pescado sea food foodstuff $18 features a great deal of omega 3 supplements... presents anyone additional vigor, are generally that they providing very good foodstuff? Zero these are certainly not. Precisely why? Cuz that they provide the top foodstuff. Forgot to note a thing particular below, your ?Mole De Olla? ended up being in their ideal. Don't forget about to attempt the idea while oughout arrive
Vegetarian selection in their ideal. Gone to the present position with a Feb 5th nighttime using our gf. A new waiter resting people with a cozy position.. Your assistance ended up being quite warm and friendly along with rapid. On the other hand, your veg-food came up throughout smaller recipe along with good quality ended up being worthy of the bucks. Do you think you're searching for a position using wonderful feeling this can be a appropriate locale. Us along with our gf got an amazing chitchat, immediately after a very long time.
You don't realize the particular food selection is at the following and also almost everything we all bought has been tasty! The particular wine beverages record wil attract and also significantly costed. People from france malbec is an excellent blend with your food. My partner and i has been careful in regards to the record regarding tequilas nevertheless the waiters realized dealing with that. I'll have previously made a decision undertake a acquire along with my own close friends as of this spot.
Not necessarily traditional yet modern day. My partner and i has been away from funds about in which evening and also still left my own VISA credit card in the home, getting an everyday consumer ? My partner and i misplaced my own confront nevertheless the director has been considerate adequate to be able to i want to pay out, about my own subsequent check out. Any director knowing every one of the consumers just isn't one thing you obtain with an everyday bistro. In addition to their utmost program, the particular feel just isn't one thing which can be neglected
Vegetarian menus from it's greatest. Proceeded to go for this location on the Fri night along with my personal gf. The waitress sitting all of us on the comfy location.. The actual support had been really pleasant as well as quick. Nevertheless, the actual veg-food arrived within little meal as well as high quality had been really worth the cash. Have you been buying location along with excellent atmosphere this is actually the correct location. Me personally as well as my personal gf experienced an incredible speak, following quite a long time.
They've the fairly big selection of beef as well as seafood seviche, that We attempted -- these were amazing. We have not attempted the actual Salbutes however by the actual appears and also the method other people had been taking pleasure in this, We 'm preparing to return with regard to supper upon my personal wedding as well as examine all of them away. Support had been type in my experience. Delicious meals, inexpensive cost, through lunch time proceeded to go much better within each as well as high quality as well as price sensible.
You'll find 75+ goods inside selection starting from $1 for you to $135, using very good assistance. Perhaps there is some other eating place using much involving versions in reasonably priced price tag? My spouse and i don't feel consequently. Falco's really does nonetheless they don't get numerous selection as well as fee anyone pertaining to further mozerella. My spouse and i discover this specific eating place, Salpicon because IDEAL, while the idea relates to foodstuff along with assistance.
We always dine at Salpicon whenever we visit Chicago. It's well worth the drive from Indiana. We have visited Salpicon since its opening and not been disappointed. I have dined in some of the best restaurants around the world and Salpicon is among my favorites.. Your meals are consistently inventive, tasty, perfectly prepared and offered. When using the Margaritas worth the taxi fare and hotel enabling anybody to own them. Would that people existed in Chicago being more, but we never miss the opportunity much more town.
Of the best Mexican restaurants in Chicago, Salpicon is the finest Mexican fine dining restaurant I've been to. The quality of the food here is divine - wonderful... this is one of the most popular places in the neighborhood, great food and worth the trip, and the price. This is some of the best food I have ever had. The best wine list you'll encounter, The margaritas are some of the best if not the best I have ever had--not too tart not too sweet. The meal was okay. The tamalitos were excellent. The guacamole which looked more like avocado salsa was ok. Chicken dish had salsa salpicon on it which is habanero chiles were excellent. Dessert lime sorbet was too good and service was great.
It?s one of our favorite dining places and definitely one of the top Mexican restaurants in Chicago. The service was exceptional, as was the food. The menu is very simple but with complex dishes that are usually typical of regions in Mexico with a modern twist. It think we sampled 80% of the menu to get an idea of the flavors. The bar is filled with well over 100 bottles of tequila; don?t expect a cocktail other than those that have Tequila. No Vodka, No gin, no rum, etc. Wine is the exception; you have from over 10,000 wine bottle selections. I never had Mexican with fine Tequila and a French wine. It works!!!
I was very excited to try out this mexican restaurant and when I got there I was quite disappointed. Everything on the menu was overpriced and the food was too "gourmet" for a mexican place. Everyone I went with disliked their meals and the bill was pretty hefty in the end. Definitely not my favorite mexican restaurant in the city.
Great spot for a special occasion that calls for Mexican! Delicious food, nice atmosphere and good line-up of tequillas.
Pros: Delicious Food
the credit physician and the restoration team, michael allen says a low credit score can keep you from your dreams, restoration of your credit can help get you into a new home, car, thats why we celebrated with the 750 and above credit score club at salpicon mmmmm talk about good latino food, the salsa is awesome i was amazed at the good service, congradtulations to all the new members who were put into the new 750 club, thank u to the staff at salpicon
Pros: helping latino into new home
Cons: low credit score
The contemporary Mexican food is absolutely superb and definitely the best in the city. Wines by the glass or by the bottle are always terrific which cannot be said for many of the other upscale restaurants that we visit and which surround us in the Rush street- Gold coast-Streeterville area. . The 'Jalapeos Rellenos de Queso Capeados' appetizer is excellent and the 'Filete de Res en Salsa de Moritas con Hongos' beef tenderloin main course with unbelievable tasty sauce is out of this world. Friends love the Margaritas and Tequilas. Salpicon being 'Fit for Foodies' is a complete understatement.- It is a Foodies heaven! Fit for someone looking for a cheap basic mexican food chain it is not. We dine out at upscale American, Italian, Seafood etc restaurants every week but Salpicon is now our firm favorite for ourselves, friends and any out of town visitors. This is definitely one of the very best if not the best restaurant in Chicago.
Pros: Absolutely Superb Upscale Contemporary Mexican Food
Cons: Cannot get back to Salpicon Often Enough
I took a party of seven for a birthday celebration, two of them are children. As we were reading the menus, the owner turned the lights down very low, but only over our table. We asked the light be brought back up to reading level, and a waiter returned it to decent setting. Not two minutes later, the owner dims it again.
That is not creepy enough, but the owner continually stared at the two kids during the entire meal, which could not end soon enough! I mentioned that I was bothered by this man ogling my daughter, and received no apology.
I heard great things about this Mexican restaurant, and each of us found the food very disappointing. The chile rellenos were clammy, the lamb chops were bony and difficult to cut, even medium rare. The pollo mole had a wisp of mole sauce, almost as if dropped on it by mistake.
Do not bring children into this restaurant under any circumstances, and consider packing a flashlight.
Cons: Indigestible food, creepy & condescending service
I have been dining at Salpicon on a regular basis every since they first open their doors in 1995 and I've always had an excellent experience there.
Over the years, I have taken many, many friends there and they too have become fans and regulars of Salpicon. Sure, the restaurant may have "loud" decor, prices that are more expensive than your neighborhood burrito house and a tight dining space, but what makes it special is the excellent food and outstanding flavors of award-winning and nationally-acclaimed chef Priscila Satkoff.
I am writing to defend my taste buds!
When I read the few ??negative? reviews, I believe that these folks walked into the wrong restaurant. They might have been looking for Las Pinatas (just up the street ?? decent/cheap Mexican food) but somehow ended up at Salpicon. They may have been looking giant combo platters and jumbo hangover margaritas, but instead they dined at a fine restaurant unfamiliar to them; a restaurant that puts flavor, uniqueness and quality ahead of quantity.
If you??re looking for a ??burrito-the-size-of-your-head? that??s fine. But please don??t slam Salpicon for taking Mexican food to an entirely new level.
Uncle Julio??s it is not. Chi-Chi??s it is not. Adobo Grill it is not. If you want to gorge then walk down the street to Las Pinatas (or take a cab if you??re that lazy). If you want to throw back shots of cheap tequila, cab over to El Jardin in Wrigleyville and slam away till you see double. Or triple.
What brings me back to Salpicon time and time again are the wonderful flavors and sauces. Must haves on the menu include: the spicy Jalapenos Rellenos (if you??re excepting a plate of deep-fried Jalapeno Poppers by the dozen, stay away); the tasty spinach salad ??Ensalada Espinaca? (if you want a Buca di Beppo-sized salad, stay away); the fresh blue marlin Seviche; any of the appetizer specials: any one of Priscila??s cream soups ?? quite outstanding; my-mouth-is-watering-right-now lamb chops and beef tenderloin; and any of the fresh fish specials ?? they have always been excellent.
And those who say Salpicon Margaritas are ??watered down? are certainly unfamiliar with top-shelf, extra-smooth, 100% agave tequilas. Thus they are disappointed because that nasty ??twang? of cheap tequila/ grain alcohol is missing. Sorry to disappoint you, but nasty is not what real tequila tastes like.
As far as price, with quality food comes quality prices. If you only go there once a year for special occasions, then that is what kind of restaurant it is: special.
I??ve seen a lot of restaurants come and go here in Chicago, but as long as Priscila continues to dazzle me - and all of us Salpicon regulars - with her creativity and wonderful flavors, this is one restaurant that will continue to thrive and stand out above the rest.
Sorry, no combo platters here!
Pros: Best Mexican Flavors and Dishes in Chicago!
Cons: None (unless you're looking for a cheap burrito house.)
My wife and I had lunch there during the Old Town art fair simply because we were there and not because we had sought it out. $60 later, it became plain that we didn't need this place and that they were just soaking us for poor food. Since any local taco stand can do better, you shouldn't waste your money in going there, either.
When we got there the place was empty and stark besides the cheesy retro decor. We wanted a glass of wine but glasses averaged $15+ and the wine list read like a encyclopedia: overpriced and no where to start. We ordered Margaritas at $10 dollars a piece that came in boring 6 oz un-stemmed glasses watered down with ice and most likely tap water as well. My girlfriend ordered a margarita with premium tequila at $12, the waitres recommened it for women, and I ordered a regular margarita for $10.00 with tequila no better than Jose Cuervo. The $7.00 dollar tomale plate was resonable and had a variety of taste of mole chicken Alskan Halibut and pork tomales on banana and corn leaves; I should of ordered it as my main course. A rude Maitre D' interupted us if we have any questions about the wine list and we said "No" . Then he rudely just walked away with no comment to his podium. He was awkward and un-personable older man with a bow-tie. I have received much better personalities at Chili's. The place was empty and all the hosts and attendants stood at the bar just kinda looking at our table. For our entrees, nothing was cheaper than $20.00 a plate. I ordered the Chicken mole and it was good but all it was is rice, two boneless chicken breasts and mole sauce. The cuisine was good and left us satisfied but highly remourceful when I spent $80.00 (tip included) for average Mexican cuisine and two watered down Margaritas and an appetizer. Drinks were terrible and anything on the wine list you need to take on a second Mortgage. I would never go to this place again. In fact I wish I never made dinner reservations for Second City because as I walked around the area my girlfriend and we noticed several other restaurants probably with better food at much better prices we could've gone to instead. We will never go to Salpicon again.
Pros: Authentic Mexican Cuisine
Cons: Cold Serivce and overpriced
Quite possibly the most A to Z horrible dinning experience. RUDE owner and staff, from the reservations, through the entire dinner. Food was brought out cold, order was screwed up, service was terrible, margaritas were watered down - over priced lemonade. They litteraly DO NOT deserve your business for their over priced, nonsensical, wannabe version of an actual Fine Dining establishment. If you just happen to be the luckiest person on earth and get decent food and service, this place is no bigger than a closet! You are on top of the table next to you, forget privacy or comfort, I mean romance is taking your date to a conference with the table on the right and left isn't it?
Pros: They have a door to walk out of
Cons: They have a door to walk into
Me and my friends went to cerebrate my birthday, and UNFORTUNATELY I choose to go to Salpicon, as I always like to try new places. Starting with making the reservation; they take your credit card information when reserving a table, as there is a $75.00 cancellation fee per person? As soon as we arrived, we had to wait 20 min. for valet parking and 30 min. to be seated even though we had a reservation. Let's move forward with awful customer service? the owner instead of greeting was very rude; the servers, would not take an appetizer order unless the full order was placed at once. The prices are outrageous and the food portions are very small, the food is not as tasty, the restaurant is very simple, definitely not worth their price? Unfortunately, they ruin my appetite; I hope this review reaches other people before their appetite gets ruined. If you are willing to have a great experience, try Adobo grill (much less expensive, much better food, great ambiance), Carnival (expensive but worth their price, great customer service, really fancy, excellent chef selection?) and I can go on, but definitely any other place will make you feel welcome. DO NOT GO TO SALPICON!
Cons: Ambiance, parking service, prices, customer service
This fabulous Old Town restaurant is one of my favorites in the city. Warm, cozy, with fantastic and friendly staff, Salpicon's menu has something for everyone. I come back to the restaurant at least once a week!! Check out all the wonderful awards the restaurant has won- appropriately on display by the host desk. The wine and tequila list is tremendous- not to mention the staff are extremely knowledgeable about food and wine pairings. Try any of the wonderful weekly specials (particularly the duck when it is on the menu). The ceviche as a starter is wonderful! The tenderloin filet and camarones al mojo de ajo are amazing. If you want excellent, authentic, modern Mexican fare, Salpicon is an absolute must visit!!!!
Pros: Fabulous menu, something for everyone!
Salpicon has to be one of my favorite restaurants in the city of Chicago- and believe me when I say, I go to A LOT of great restaurants. Let me first say, this is no taco bell. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but this is true authentic Mexican Food......not a Tex Mex shack you stop into before a night of drinking. The food is EXCELLENT, the staff are friendly, quick, helpful- I am always greeted with a smile when I walk in the door and always seated very quickly. The restaurant is cozy- make sure to make reservations. It is always a pretty full house, which speaks to its popularity among foodies. For an upscale restaurant, I think the price is right- REMEMBER, this is not a taco and burrito joint, but a restaurant for "in the know" diners. Try any of the fabulous weekly specials- there is always something for everyone to enjoy. I love their Margaritas too- I recommend the Margarita made with the Herradura Reposado- if you want some tequila that leaves you with a headache from hell, wondering how you got home....this is not the place for you. If you are a wine person- they have one of the best lists in town. Ask recommendations from the very friendly sommelier. Top picks for me are the ceviche, the crab cakes, the camarones al mojo de ajo, and the excellent pork chop!!! Get ready for an excellent dining experience!!! Believe me, you won't be disappointed!!
Pros: Great food, friendly staff.
Cons: Go early and make reservations
Ever seen the 'Soup N*zi' episode of Seinfeld?! Just like that, but MUCH worse:
Very rude manager and owner, not accomodating to any request.
Very small and cramped restaurant. People always bumping into you or your table.
$25 per head if you cancel a reservation.
Very overpriced food that is mediocre and in very small quantity.
Screwed up a vegetarian order entirely, wouldnt even comp the dish.
Salpicrap...... in sooo many ways.
Cons: Too many for this small line
THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE. WE STARTED OUR NIGHT AT OUR FAVORITE MEXICAN RESTAURANT UNCLE JULIO'S HACIENDA, AND THE WAIT WAS TOO LONG THAT WE DECIDED TO GO ELSEWHERE. I WALK PAST SALPICON ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK AND WE THOUGHT WE'D TRY IT. FROM THE MOMENT WE STEPPED IN THE DOOR, OUR MOODS CHANGED. THE ARROGANT, UNGRACIOUS HOST COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE DISRESPECTFUL. SINCE WE DIDN'T HAVE A RESERVATION, HE LOOKED AT US LIKE WE DIDN'T BELONG THERE. EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE SEVERAL OPEN TABLES, HE "DID US A FAVOR" AND SAT US. WE WERE HESITANT TO EVEN GO ANY FURTHER, BUT YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER, HOWEVER IN THIS CASE THE COVER TELLS YOU EVERYTHING. WHEN WE DIDN'T WANT TO CHECK OUR COATS, WE THOUGHT THEY WOULD INTENTIONALLY ADD A LITTLE "FLAVOR" TO OUR FOOD. WE FELT LIKE WE WERE BACK IN JUNIOR HIGH AND THE WAIT STAFF WAS GOSSIPING ABOUT US IN THE CORNER. WHEN I PAY $7 FOR CHIPS AND SALSA, I EXPECT A LITTLE MORE THAN 6 CHIPS AND HALF A SPOONFUL OF SALSA. THIS IS A HORRIBLE DATE PLACE, BECAUSE NOT ONLY ARE YOU SITTING RIGHT ON TOP OF THE COUPLE NEXT TO YOU, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO PAY A FORTUNE TO FEEL CLOSE TO SATISFIED. I HAVE A GOOD JUDGEMENT OF GREAT FOOD, AND THIS JUST WASN'T IT. IF YOU CAN'T TELL BY NOW, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO EVEN MY WORST ENEMY.
Pros: THE WATER WAS COLD.....
Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE
I went at 5:30 on a week day. My friend and I were told that since we did not have a reservation that we could have a table but that if someone with a reservation showed up we would be asked to give up our table. There were maybe 4 people at this time dining and maybe 30 empty tables. The host or manager was so rude to us. We sat down and just the lingering attitude left a bad taste in our mouths. All we could talk about was how nasty he was. Then our appetizers came, lets just say they were not very good. We asked for our check and left.
Cons: the food and the service
Came here on New Year's Eve with my husband. Everyhing was perfect; from the valet service to the chocolate truffles with tequila)! My husband had the crabcake and I had the scallop app with bacon. Both were well-conceived and tasted fresh and yummy. For entrees we had the lamb chops and the filet with huitlacochi (sp)? sauce. The lamb melted in my mouth and my husband's filet was delicious on its own but was superbly matched with the huitlacochi sauce. For dessert I had the pear and mago tart with goat's milk ice cream (yum) and Jim had the chocolate espresso cake with vanilla ice cream Both tasted as good as they looked. Their wine list is extensive and very impressive and Henry, the sommelier, picked out a great bottle of wine for us that went well with what we ordered (I think it was an Australian Grenache). Our server Mark made us feel very welcome. We can't wait to return!
Pros: excellent food, great wine list, professional service
Cons: not close enough to our home!
