Loved eating outside. Loved the lively group of soccer players that bought my friends and I drinks. Mostly I love the chimichuri (sp) sauce and the great steak. I am a steak girl and this place knows how to make a great steak. The only thing that I wish they had is a bigger menu with more choices. Otherwise I could have hung out and people watched all night. Think its good to plan to wait on weekends.

I travel all the world as a restaurant reviewer. Been in many arg.restaurants and even in buenos aires. I know then from experience what an argentinian restaurant should be. But this isn't it. It is trying though.

Service is: hectic, and employees have no vision on details. It is just massproduction.Just too busy for them.

Reservations: is chaotic. If you go with 4 persons they go 1st then 2 persons. The don't meet the time you made the reservations.

Food: The meat was disappointing. It was full of sinews. At some point it was even tough. This is not the real arg. pampa's meat. A "Bife de Lomo" should be so soft that, with one cut, the meat will fall off.
The taste of the meat is to much coaly. I am sure they don't clean the grill before they put new meat on it. Not surprised as they are too busy. The salad is just onions, tomato and lettuce. NO taste at all.

Ambiance: romantic with candles but it is so dark that you can hardly read the menucard.

Pricing: not too high but i had better for same pricing. I rather pay more for better food and service and also have a normal conversation. The noise is just incredible.
You are wonerding why it is so busy then? Just 50 tables, and people sit too long. Also their are only 2 argentinian restaurants in Chicago. So less competition. The romantic part attracts mainly younger people and the name Argentinian have for their meat. aswell. Also the right area for younger people. Probably many live in the area. (romantic )

Waiting on food can go over 1 hour. That is way to long.

Concluding: if you don't mind this all just visit them and find out yourself. Don't forget to bring you alcohol allong.BYOB. Says enough i think about the restaurant.
A good restaurant should offer the famous Malbec wine with it.

If you are a red meat eater, I suggest the steak. The Argentinians get is right!!! My dad took me here once for my birthday and it was soooo good. It was small and loud, but I'd say its worth it on a special occasion.

It's very romantic, that is probably the best thing about Tango Sur. The food was mediocre (they served stale bread) and not that cheap. And of course parking was a beast given the area. I would not recommend it.

I've had kobe steak at many overpriced places in many states and nothing compares to the bife de chorizo or the entra?a at Tango Sur. The chef is great, the cuts are good and the taste is wonderfull. I am now a usual customer and always want to go back. All my argentinian friends go there at least once a week what speaks up for the place I think. Eat well for a fraction of the price you can pay at Morton's or Chicago fire house with very comparable quality

Tango Sur is a great restaurant that really gives you a great value along with a wonderful dining experience. The steak there is amazing with all that flavor. Their mashed potatoes are amazing and they have a great selection of appetizers. I loved the BYOB aspect making the restaurant seem more intimate and homey. The no corkage fee is a bonus.
I went on a Monday evening at 9pm and the place was packed. There were even people waiting by the door for a free table. My friends and I loved the place so much we created a site for the place (we found out that Tango Sur has no website). Google search: tangosur.typepad
along with a little video spoof of the place on You Tube: Senor Sur - Tango Sur

Tango Sur is one of the best BYOB resteraurants in the city. For the price, you cannot get a better steak in the city. If you are going there for the first time I would recommend the filet and you will be sure to go back again in the future. The seating is a little cramped inside, but if the weather is nice the outdoor seating is perfect.

I moved to Chicago about a 1 year and a half ago and this is one of the first places I went to. Needless to say after visiting many other Top Steakhouses.....I have been to this restaurant 7 times since the first!!!! I have taken everyone that has visited me in Chicago. The Argentine beef is beyond delicious. I have had the filet with the Argentine style potatoes as well as the Spinach potatoes........OMG it's so......freakin...... good!!!!!! And there is an olive oil based garnish for the steak that is delicious. The service is very good and atmosphere is great. It can be pretty loud in there so think twice about having and intimate evening. All in all.....it is one of best dining experiences in Lakeview.

My best friend, a Chicago native, turned me on to Tango Sur 2 years ago, and I have craved it ever since! I live in NJ, so I am only able to enjoy the tender double filet mignon with spinach mashed potatoes on my visits to Chitown, which is 2X per year. Having dinner at Tango is a definite stop on my itinerary. We normally go early to avoid the crowd and the wait for a table. I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful restaurant.

The food was excellent and the place had great potential. Very cute inside, but it was the worst service I've ever experienced. We were rushed through a three course meal in 30 minutes. We tried to slow service down, and the wait staff simply wouldn't have it. At one point, we were trying to take something off a plate before it was whisked away. It was not busy and they did not need to turn our table over, so I really don't understand what the problem was. I would not recommend this place to anyone and I definitely do not plan to return. There are so many places to go that treat customers better.

If you don't mind waiting 2 hours for a steak, then this is the place for you. The prices are not bad, especially considering how big the plates are. There is nothing phenominal about the food, but it's a cool place to dine with friends or your significant other. The BYOB factor definitely is a great incentive as you can save money on the several bottles of wine that you will go through before you get your meal. I usually order the filet mignon, and it always seems to be just mediocre. They give you 2 filets to top it off, but I'd prefer just 1 good quality filet. Nevertheless, I'd recommend it just for the experience. After a couple bottles of wine, you won't even remember how the steaks were.

You will be completely amazed at the size of the portions at this restaurant. Bring four friends, order and appetizer and dinner for two and go home stuffed!! Amazing meat. Try the vacio and the empanadas. Avoid the melted cheese- too greesy!

Tables set so close you can hear the diners at the table next to you masticating & mmmming, fast service, dim lighting coupled with a simple candle on each table, good musica en español & the best churrasco I've had in a restaurant in Chicago make this an excellent red-meaty experience for a date, a group or a bunch of tourists wanting to escape the downtown spots. To start, sample some empanadas (argentine empanadas being my personal favorite). They're flaky & tasty and only more delightful when dunked in the chimichurri salsa (which consists of olive oil, loads of chopped fresh parsley, garlic & teensy bits of red pepper).
It should be mentioned that Argentinos are not known in the culinary world for their salad-wizardry, & Tango Sur is no exception. My forgettable salad was eaten solely for ruffage-sake. My companion's tomato slices were unripe & lacking in sweetness -- granted we went at the end of October after the local & regional tomatoes have long been eaten or canned.
However, once our perfectly seasoned, 4"-thick Churrascos arrived, the next seven minutes found us ignoring each other completely & existing in pure meat bliss. YOU COME HERE FOR THE FANTASTIC MEAT! The serving was so generous that I was able to eat two additional large meals from my leftovers. We finished up our meal with smooth, creamy flan & great espressos.
The busboy service was prompt & cordial, but our waiter managed to not change the stone facial expression he wore nor his uninterested manner of speech throughout our meal. I know he was capable of smiling & vocal inflection because I heard him chatting with his coworkers near the credit card machine-pearly whites displayed & all. Not that I require cheesy, fake American grins when eating out, but since I'm paying for his service, i expect to be treated with some measure of respect even though we belong to the same peer group.

Tango Sur is amazing for its meat fare. The steaks are succulent and sizzling on your table. The best part is that you get to bring your own wine from the wine store which is less than a block away. I hate the idea of restaurants charging a high premium on wine and therefore it is a welcome break.
The restaurant is small and cramped and definitely not so good if you want to go out on a romantic quiet date as it is usually bustling on a weekend. The food is of course good and what you would expect of a South American palate. The meat served tends to be over marinated in olive oil, and garlic and can get a little over whelming.
The service is good and the staff is friendly.

it was very simple with a candle lit dinner, yet was also very sweet with the decorations and paintings. The service wasn't very fast but it allowed more time for conversation and was completely worth it once you took your first bite. I had the Churrasco, which was incredibly delicious. It's a 12oz sirloin steak and the seasonings were flavorful, but not too overpowering. This place was great and i'm definately coming back again.

My boyfriend and I were seated at 6:30 p.m., at 8:10 p.m. we had nothing more than bread and water and our waiter had only come to our table twice. The service was UNBELIEVABLY HORRIBLE! When I asked to see the manager, she sent out a staff person instead who said the kitchen was really busy. But we ordered our food 1.5 hours before and tables around us were seated, had eaten and left. They staff was unapologetic and rude. We walked out and will never return. I would rather pay decent money for good service than go to this cheap place simply to be ignored.

We went here last night hoping for good steak, preparing for bad service, and were really wowed! Our wait was only 30 mins so we went down the street and grabbed a drink, we were promptly seated in the back room and it was really romantic - I loved the dim lighting, candles, and exposed brick. It was a bit loud, but nothing too bad.

The food was excellent! We tried the empanadas & filet & stuffed steak of somekind - everything had wonderful flavor. The service was surprisingly pretty great as well!

We were glad we finally tried it and happy to have found a great spot for steak close to home without having to go downtown. Excellent! Oh - also the prices are so reasonable here, what you get for the price is fantastic!

We celebrated my sister's 20th birthday here, and the food was incredible, especially the beef, and I would highly reccomend the basic filet, although the bife Vesuvio was also delicious but I prefer good meat by itself. The empanadas as appetizers were wonderful as was the ensalada russa, and the tortillas de papas. The portions were huge! and everything was easily shared. The value of the food was also amazing, especially with the amount of quality meat you were consuming. Great atmosphere, good looking servers who provide great service as well, just lots of fun!

This place is great!!! My boyfriend and I went for his birthday. We each got our own meal but they give so much food that you could share. The meals that are designed for two are more food then two normal can eat. It is also great because it is BYOB. Where else can you get a fabulous steak dinner for less then $50 for two people? Only bad thing is they don't take reservations, but they will take your phone number and call you when your table is ready.

my boyfriend and i shared the "vacio" steak made for two... it arrived on a sizzling plate with grilled sweet potatoes on the side. the best steak i've had in a very long time. possibly the best steak in chicago! my sister had the churrasco, which was a HUGE portion for the price ($14), but also delicious. i could have dunked anything that was given to me in the chimichurri sauce! it was just perfect.
we ended off the meal with coffee and dessert which was also good. :)
our waiter was very nice, courteous and knew when to attend to us.
overall, great experience, but arrive early! it got packed FAST, with a wait of 2hrs eventually, and we got our table at about 5:30pm.
i will definitely go again!

I have been there about 20 times. I go for the food, but I would not want to go on a date there. It is so noise, you cannot hear yourself think! It get's so busy waiters trip over each other. They are so busy it takes them a long time to serve you. However, they are so charming, it's okay. This is not a place to go if you need to be somewhere else on time.

took my wife for dinner on her birthday because we had previously had a big celebration earlier with 25 friends. this was our first. we had a candelight dinner in an informal setting dinner for two for less than $50, featuring the beef for two - $32 and worth every penny. best flank steak i've had. the venue included our own byob champagne, appetizers (eggplant was to die for)... and dessert. wow, what a bargain. obviously a popular spot for many others who looked like regulars- got crowded quickly...on a wed night. no wonder, the service and food was marvelous. we'll become regulars for sure, even though we are southsiders. worth the trip!

This tiny restaurant is a jewel, frequented by Latin Americans (very authentic). If you are a vegetarian, however, this is not the place for you. The accent here is on the beef...more than you can possibly eat at one meal (but great leftovers the next day). Side dishes are simple but good. Go when you really have that craving for meat, and you won't be disappointed. Great waitstaff too.

PROS: excellent preparation of meat and simple side dishes
CONS: small restaurant and even smaller outside seating

One of the best BYOB spots in Chicago!! Tango Sur is an intimate restaurant with the dark ambience set off by candlelight creating a very relaxed and casual atmosphere. The food here is great and VERY affordable. The steak here has always been cooked to the perfect temperature! The Al Filet (filet mignon) are my favorite. Summers are VERY warm in there due to the crowds and the wait for the food can sometimes be considerable. BUT.....good company and a nice bottle of wine helps to while away the time. Definitely make reservations if you're a party of 6 or more or get there earlier. Late comers have been known to form long lines outside the restaurant. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Cons: Lack of Good AC, Wait on Food, No reservations? SOL

Service was average. Cant say it was horrible, by reading other reviews posted I can say that the service has improved, cuz my experience was nothing like theirs. Waitstaff was'nt the friendliest but didnt care cuz the food made up for their lack of smiles & giggles. I ordered Bife Vesuvio & it was to die for! My husband ordered Bife Filet & it was fabulous. This restaraunt is mainly beef dishes, cuz that's what they do best. It's BYOB, nice cuz its cheaper & you can bring what you want. Prices are reasonable, & did i mention the food was absolutely fabulous! The beef is so tender and the sauces are so flavorful, it's mouthwatering! If you're a steak lover, this place is definitly for you!

Pros: Inexpensive, Excellent Food, Romantic

Cons: Parking, Crowded

If you like great, marinated steaks than Tango Sur is for you. The wait time can be ridiculous on weekends, especially in the winter when there are no outdoor seats, so be prepared. BYOB, so don't forget to bring your own wine or beer. Order the Churrasco, its unbeatable.

Cons: , Very, very noisy

Great food. Weekends are PACKED! Definitely make reservations. It is BYOL, but the Jewel down street has plenty of it. Street parking is VERY difficult so don't even bother looking for it. We went on a HOT summer day and despite the no A/C and the long wait, it was worth it for the food.

Pros: Not too loud, Outdoor seating, reservations accepted

Cons: can get very crowded, difficult parking

Good food! Good Atmosphere! What else do you need? Don't worry about the wait either, they'll call you on your cell phone when your tables ready so you can head down the street to one of the bars or go select some wine at the Dominick's.

Be sure to make reservations, or be prepared to wait. The place is packed because its that good. Its pretty dark inside and the tables are close together, but the food is excellent and a great value. Highly recommended!

The meal was very good. However we could barely read the menu due to poor lighting. We also needed items on the menu explained to us. We and others always asked "What is flap meat?" They could put it in terms we'd understand like: skirt steak, NY stip, etc.

jherrera's review is right on the money. We dined at Tango Sur on Dec 11 2002 and were surprised to have to "beg" to have our order taken. The waiter volunteered very little information and had no sense of humor. The room was very dark and we had to use a small pocket light to read the menu (other diners were doing same). Our Open Table on-line reservation was honored, but I think it was only good luck. None of the staff had the password to log on to their reservations computer. The food was very flavorful - we tried the empanadas - they were great. The vacio (pot roast) was outstanding. Deserts were also to die for: fantastic flan, and an Argentinian cake called mil hojas (a thousand leaves). If only the service were more professional. The prices are quite reasonable - a great value.

I was very disappointed with the service that I received last night at Tango Sur. The food was good. However, the service was the poorest that I have ever received while dining out. I repeatedly waited long periods of time to order and to receive my check. I was required to go back to the kitchen to request to have my order taken and again to receive my check. Please be aware that the food is very good and the service is exceptionally poor. This place would be a perfect package if the service would only improve dramaticly.

The food is delicious. The atmosphere is quaint and romantic. It is a great place to go on a date or out to dinner with a friend. There is a grocery store around the corner, so you can procure yourself a bottle of wine to bring over. Excellent.

This place is one of my favorite restaurant to have a great meal - make sure you are hungry because their portions are big. The atmosphere and food speaks to the traditional originality of Argentina.
If you are going on a Friday or Saturday night be ready to wait - they don't take reservations and the place is always packed. They provide a heater outside and they will also open your botle of wine while you wait.

Tango Sur has never failed to provide excellent service, a great quaint candle-lit atmosphere, both indoor and outdoor seating , exquisite fresh food and live music. The wait staff is really nice (maybe because our dining friend is argentinian!) At our last visit we were given invitations to their new opening of "N" which is a club that also serves light tapas! Can't wait to try that out too!

This small Argentinean storefront has pizzazz to burn (but little space to spare), and it's BYO with no corkage fee. It serves all the basics: empanadas, escabeche and an array of beef dishes that would make a gaucho sit up and takeā€¦
