In Short
Everything here exudes a quiet dignity, from the portraits of prominent Chicagoans on the high walls to the attentive yet unobtrusive service. The classic steakhouse menu starts with flash-fried calamari and Beluga caviar, then moves on to the main event: Dry-aged steaks, charbroiled with butter and fresh garlic, then sliced and served up with a la carte sides of potatoes and vegetables. Desserts include standards like Key lime pie, cheesecake and creme brulee.

Key Points

  • Wine Spectator Award 2007
  • Personalized event planning
  • Dry-aged steaks cut on premise

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - The wine list offers a global selection of more than 500 wines.
  2. The Extras - A digital stock ticker on the wall keeps day-traders up to speed on the financial world.

I have been to The Capital Grille for one business group of about thirty, and one time for a wedding reception with about forty-five. It was such a refreshing change from a hotel, or other banquet-type facility! Food, service, and the atmosphere was top-notch.

Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere

I had a really bad day at work, and really did'nt feel like attending dinner afterwards. Upon arrival to The Capital Grille, everything changed. I felt taken care of from when I walked in the door. Our server, Vanya, was spectacular. Knowledgeable, friendly, and accomodating. Have the lobster and crab cakes. Go and ask for Vanya!

Pros: Service, Food, Dining Room

I had been to The Capital Grille in Chicago the most, and also in Boston and Charlotte. Always a great time. Someone asked me to lunch recently, and suggested The Capital Grille. Before, I had always thought of it as a high-end steakhouse, with prices too prohibitive for lunch. It was no more expensive than any other place for lunch, and so much better!

After several wonderful nights at the Capital Grille of Miami I looked forward dining at the Capital Grille of Chicago. I was very impressed with the beautiful dining room. And that was it! We were served the wrong vintage wine. Both steaks at our table were overcooked. No visit from management. Loud open kitchen.

Pros: Wine List, Dining Room, Valet

Cons: , Food, Noise

Hostess station: Extremely pleasant and acommodating. Bartender: Absolutely delightful. Waitress: the pits. We had to practically lasso our unfriendly waitress on numerous occasions to have her visit our table (we suspect because we were a table of women, as she frequented the male-dominated tables that surrounded us). The steak was good, but the appetizers were extremely lacking. Tarter sauce with fine lump crab meat, or the undercooked lobster/crab fritters with the bland corn salsa? Yuck.

Ratings_icons Disappointing...

rileymacallan

To say our waiter was inattentive would be an understatement. My steak was sitting so long before having been served it was cool and gray when it arrived. A disappointing experience to say the least. Not worth the trip with so many other great steak restaurants in the city.

Pros: atmosphere

Cons: , food

Complaining about a wait time when you show up at a 5 star restaurant with no reservation?

I have dined capital grille in connecticut and illinois and they are by far the best steak I have ever encountered. They have a flavor that is out of this world. The creme brulee is a must have for any sweet tooth. The vegatables were cooked to perfection (try the asparagus) and don't even get me started on the lobster. Everything I tasted was phenomenal and I plan on dining their again and again.

Pros: location, menu, ambience

Cons: , in the party room

Ratings_icons My Kind of Restaurant

The Capital Grille, is, hands down, the best steakhouse in Chicago. It has the most elegant dining room, it provides a terrific value for power lunches, and extrordinary ambience for romantic and business dinners. There is a terrific private room for large parties, too!The the steak is dry-aged, unlike Morton's, and the seafood cannot be topped. The service is the best I have ever had anywhere. The staff is the most professional and knowledgeable I have ever seen. This is Chicago's new quintessential restaurant.

Pros: Service, Ambience, Food
