Bloomingdale's

★★★☆☆
From when Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale first stocked the hoop skirt in the 1800s, Bloomingdale's has made a fashionable name for itself in men's, women's, and children's apparel, accessories, and more.

My wife and I are still in the process of enduring an inexcusable demonstration of incompetence. We moved into a new house in November, 2006, and we ordered bedroom furniture for our toddler son. At the writing of this review, 27 July, 2007 we have still not yet received the bed and dresser.

We were to take original delivery in January. Halfway through January we called to get an update. Sales associates pointed the finger at late delivery from the manufacturer several times, but other enquiries showed the goods in the warehouse. After a month of misdirection it became apparent that Bloomingdales lost our furniture in their warehouse. A sales associate cancelled the order and placed a new one in April for delivery in early June. In mid-June we began enquiring again because Bloomingdales was making no attempt to keep us abreast of our order status. This time the order was delayed with the excuse that the manufacturer had delivered only the bed, but not the dresser.

After another few weeks of the Bloomingdales runaround we went to the store to approach the managers in charge of the department. They offered excuses that they did not control the manufacturer or shipper, but the fact is that we bought the furniture from Bloomingdales. We should not have to deal with their supply chain problems directly. It is their responsibility. Finally, they committed to delivery on July 17. On July 17 the store manager called us to say everything was ready. 4 hours later the warehouse called us to say that they could not deliver the dresser because the it was damaged. This was because the dresser had been moving around the warehouse since it was delivered in January.

During our visit to the store in early July, we saw that there was an exact copy of the furniture we ordered on display. These pieces were delivered after our initial order was delayed, yet there was no system in place to recognize that there were open and delayed orders in place for the pieces that were to go on display.

After the damage ordeal we contacted the store manager who, after a few days of debate, offered us the floor models at a 20% discount. After another few days the department manager called us with the exact price. A week after agreeing on the price we still did not have delivery information.

I am hoping maybe before my son is a teenager that we can get him furniture from Bloomingdales. Meantime, this abysmal experience has turned us off to ever buying anything from Bloomingdales again.

Bloomingdale's is an upscale store along the lines of Nordstrom, Saks, or Macy's. That means it has very good merchandise at very high prices. I don't buy much from here, but I like to look around once in a while.
