Brought in an instrument I had not used in years and they made it better than new. The people that helped me were all friendly and accommodating.

This is one of those ma and pop music stores that sells a lot of high end equipment. I work nearby and go in every once in a while for guitar picks, literature and the occasional browsing of my wish list.

They aren't particularly good at managing their inventory, but if you know them, they are good people and it seems this store is more of just a hobby for them. I can appreciate that, but I also think they need a store manager that will do the dirty work like keeping inventory or researching new products.

They really know their stuff over there so I highly recommend checking them out and give them a chance to help you out. I personally prefer these kinds of stores over the larger music stores in the area.

The others music stores in the area are mostly run by kids that are just trying to sell you whatever they have. For example, I was looking for a Les Paul recently and was looking at the Epiphone, RavenWest and Agile which run about $440. I go into that other music store by CLC in Grayslake and they tell me I should go with the ESP EC-1000 for almost double the price with no mention of the cost or even an explanation as to why I should spend so much more! Another example is Guitar Center. In the heart of the Christmas Season these Jokers not only avoid any real discounts or sales, but they had ZERO left handed les pauls to try out. ZERO! Do you know how many guitars they have hanging on their walls? I went into Great Lakes Music recently and saw 3 different Lefty Les Pauls I could have played. But I already got my new guitar online so it didn't matter.

The point I'm making here is, this is a family owned music store. It's not perfect, but it's a heck a lot of better than anything else around here. Even if you never buy anything, their experience is worth visiting.

So I ordered a guitar book off them and they said they would have it in next week. So I could pick it up but when I got there the next week. Guess what they didn't have it and so I waited another week. Then I called them to see if it was there so I could save a trip and it still wasn't there so they said oh it will be in monday (today). So I called today and it still wasn't in and I have been waiting around two weeks. So I suggest not ordering from them!

I would highly rate Jeff and team at GLM. I have purchased several guitars from them over the years (Taylors, Fenders). In addition, I brought in a guitar that I had bought off the internet that I had accidently dropped and CRACKED THE TOP. Jeff and team did a huge bangup job on the repair (it is literally invisible). To boot, Jeff knows a ton about guitars, equipment, set-up, etc. They can beat the prices of any of the big box guitar guys, and the personal service can't be beat. If you are looking for a great shop to get your gear, you have found the spot.

I am fairly new to palying after a 37 year hiatus and these folks did absolutely NOTHING & wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with my dry Gibson Guitar. First of all, they insisted I essentially contact Gibson since the guitar in question was likely beyond repair. After I expressed an interest in their guitars & financing, I left my contact info, social security # and credit info with them to qualify for Zero Percent financing. Although they in no uncertain terms promised to call me back 3 days later on Monday, I still to this day have NEVER received a reply (this was back in November 2009).
The boottom line is, I ended up having muyGibson guitar rehumidified in Chicago such that it plays exceptionally well. Also, & of particular note, they lost a customer to Guitar Center since I ended up purchasing a Taylor GS8 from them due to their exceptional customer service and Zero Percent financing. If these Great Lake Music folks had exemplified any customer service and sincerity and simply followed up on their promise to call me back I would have likely purcharse a new Taylor GS guitar from them.

I would not purchase a pick from them....nor should you!

Having problems with a school sound system? This is the place to go. I needed repairs on a school sound system for a music program and Great Lake Music was able to come out right away and supply me with an excellent sound system for the evening music program. They were also able to repair my existing sound system. The people of Great Lake Music were friendly and knowledgeable and able to help me in a timely manner. They will also be my place to go for instrument repairs and supplies.

The staff at this store is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The selection of instruments is exceptional and cannot be matched by any store in the area. They have a large selection of acoustic and electric guitars as well as keyboards and other instruments. They will repair your instrument at this store as well. There are lessons offered through this store. Prices are reasonable and negotiable on larger purchases.
