WOW - I see overwhelming responses of dissapointment!!!!! Is this place as bad as most of Chicago thinks. My fiancee is considering having our wedding and reception there, so I can take it that would be a huge mistake?

would love to hear anyone who has either a wedding or reception at Flatwater?

My husband and friends wanted to take me out for dinner and drinks before meeting up with a bunch of people for my 30th birthday celebration. After finding out that the initial restaurant I wanted to dine at had a 3 hour wait, we stumbled down to Flatwater per the suggestion of a member of our party. Let me just say, what a blessing in disguise that the other place had such a long wait! Everything that we ate and drank here was wonderful! We started with the Gaspacho (sorry if that is spelled wrong), that was definately a loose interpretation, which, in our foody book, is always a pro! There was a hint of cinnamon which made it to die for! My husband and I decided to split our meals. I chose the seared Ahi Tuna, while he picked the Short ribs! YUM! Both melted in our mouths. The other 2 diners in our party had Short ribs as well, and the Pork Chop. My husband and I are usually not Pork Chop fans, but, this dish made us change our mind! Delicious prep, tender, and the fennel mashed potato garnish was amazing!

Oh, and we can't forget drinks! Blueberry Mojitos! AWESOME!!!!

The waitstaff was nothing but accomodating, and at the end of our meal, we made sure to tell our waitress how awesome the meal was. She said she would pass that onto the chef. She wasn't kidding! He came out to speak with us! Told us that their pork chop is custom cut from a vendor up north, that he frequents the local farmers markets for his produce, etc. He was just a joy for us to speak with!

oh, and don't forget the view! Being a chicagoan my entire life, I never get sick of sitting outdoors and looking at my city!

Def give this hidden gem a shot, I think you'll like it!

Pros: Great outdoor dining!

Cons: Noisy boats (and those aren't even that bad)

.

Spectacular location on the water but as expected with these type of tourist restaurants, the food couldn't match the vibe. My wife had the chicken which was tasteless except for the pound of salt it was drenched in. They couldn't even get the grilled broccoli right. My sea bass was rubbery and cold. And again salty. I generally don't complain about restaurant food but in this case I couldn't help it. Truly awful. Too bad because it's really a cool place. Plus the service was slow, although friendly. Skip the food and come for drinks only. Good looking crowd. Awesome view of the Chicago River.

My husband and I decided to check out Flatwater. We called earlier in the evening for a reservation...and even though we arrived late, we were quickly escorted to our table. Our server, Cara, came over, introduced herself and asked for our drink order. She then shared a special, took our order and within 15 or less, was back with our entree. The food was great, the service was excellent and the ambiance was beautiful. All in all, we cannot wait to go back and we will definately ask to sit in Cara's section.

I went there many many times in the past... I love this place for its location by the river and live performance on weekends. As far as food, it's okay and hostesses are not the most welcoming out there. However, this past Fri I was nicely surprised with our waiter and service. Plus, we had the best mojitos you can have. Highly recommend the place for a weekend brunch...

This is one of the coolest little dining spots in the neighborhood. Most people go the in the summer to sit on the patio, but i really like coming here in the winter where there are far less crowds and I can still enjoy the same view. The city is absolutely gorgeous by the river. We started coming here a few months ago when we heard there was a new chef at the helm. I have to say that we have consistently had great creative meals here. The staff really seems to know the food and really make a for a enjoyable dining experience. If you come here, you have to get the Ribeye steak. This thing is unbelievable. I like coming here whenever I have freinds in from out of town and it is also the perfect spot for a quiet business dinner.

I visited Flatwater after a not so wonderful dinner over at Fulton's on the River. My friend and I figured we'd do cocktails and dessert since we had just eaten. The energy at Flatwater was popping from the moment we entered the door. We were seated promptly outside on the patio with the water right beneath us. Their was a DJ spinning that night and the music was all good! The crowd was diverse, mature and out for a good time. Although I didn't have any of their entrees, I gave the menu a once over and the selections seems very appetizing. We closed the restaurant, danced and mouthed the lyrics to many classics that night. The next time in Chicago, I will definitely pop in again.

We recently dined at Flatwater for their 'Bossa Nova Brunch' and we had an amazing experience. The location on the river coupled with the live Brazilian band made it quite an unforgettable experience. The menu was pretty diverse with both breakfast/brunch food and some lunch type items. The favorite at the table was definitely the spicy eggs benedict. We really felt like we were on vacation while we were dining at Flatwater. They have done a really good job in creating a unique Chicago experience.

first of all, I go in to speak with the host and she was terrible and rude. She said my table was't ready ad that i had to wait at the bar. Instead of asking us to wait!!! Then I have a seat at the bar and the bartender was a show off, someone who obviously has spent too much time bartending and think he owns the place... He kept throwing glasses in the air and bottles, and flipping things, while constatly spraying me with liquor. He didn't eve apologize. VERY RUDE!!! Then When the Host seats me, she seats me upstairs and the table were everywhere! The servers were bringing tables over my head while I was trying to read the flimsy menu. When the server came, I explained that I wasnted to sit downstairs on the lake where I made my reservation. She brought the nasty host up annd she told us, we could only sit downstairs at the bar..outside.... NO THANK YOU!!!!

We tried to make the best of it and our server came over...Looked like trailer trash!! Her name was Lindsay. She had the nerve to start flirting with my boyfriend right in front of me!!!! (Laughing and grabbing his arm, filling his drink, not mie, asking him how his food was not mine) So we left..I do't know who was bothered more, me or my date!!!!

Avoid Lindsay, dont eat, just stand outside and grab a drink, or better yet, aviod flatwater all together.

My husband and I have tolerated the less than perfect service because the location and atmosphere are so great. We stopped in for a glass of wine recently, and the new young bartender was very rude and the food was horrible! We're really disappointed as this has been a favorite hang-out for us! We WILL NOT be going back.

We went to Flatwater while visiting Chicago on Saturday (12/29), we were a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews, but we received great service, we even got seated about 10 mins early, the food was excellent, one of the best filet mignons I've had in a long time (cooked to perfection), and the atmosphere was very nice. They play good upbeat music in the dining area. It is a very trendy feeling place, kind of reminds me of some of the trendier spots in London. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to go out for an upscale dinner, be prepared with drinks to spend about $100 per couple...they also have a cool lounge area with a fireplace.

I don't know what is about this place, but it is always packed with women for Happy Hour. It must be the feel of the space. It does not really feel at all like you typical pub. It has more of a lounge feel. Anyway, they have a great $2 happy hour food menu and a pretty nice draft beer selection. I love going there in the winter and getting a seat by the fireplace.

I have been to Flatwater several times on dates and it never fails to impress. I love the fact that it is one level away from street level. It almost has a very exclusive hidden feel to it. The best part about Flatwater are the amazing views of the river and downtown architecture. I cannot think of another place in the city with these kinds of views. The river really makes you feel relaxed and like you are on vacation. The menu has some nice choices, but the avocado egg rolls are a must if you are dining there.

I went there with my parents. We didn't make reservations on a weeknight but, as expected, it was jam-packed with what seemed to be glamorous Loop young business-types. We were seated promptly indoors (it was a gorgeous day and the outdoor section had been reserved out). Our waitress didn't seem to care about our service. She didn't seem very friendly. The food was fairly good but for the price, heh, you could find that anywhere. We had the marlin, the ahi tuna, and the sea bass. I had a coconut martini. Everything was good. Not great. Good.

In all, nothing special. Good decent restaurant. Priced for what it's worth. Nothing spectacular.

I am a professional event planner and I have had corporate events all over Chicago. Recently, a colleague told me about Flawater because she had such a wonderful dinner there. I was planning a party for an Investment Banking client of mine, so I decided to take a look at Flatwater for the event. I really loved the place and we winded up doing our event there. Everything was flawless. I thought the place might be a bit too "over the top" for my conservative client, but they absolutely loved it! My client sent me a great letter of appreciation, which prompted me to write this review. Thank Flatwater! I will be back with many more clients.

We recently celebrated a wedding brunch at Flatwaters for a Colorado couple. Our group of 50 family and friends came from all over. All of our guest had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and kept hot. And the timing of the serving, table set ups, attention from your staff was awesome! The venue from the River can't be beat and was a guarantee, but Flatwaters' attention to our party was an important part in making the celebration a success. Rakesh, the event coordinator, was very helpful and responsive to our needs in answering any questions/concerns we had. I am sure our family will be talking about the event for months to come. It was truely a wonderful time. We will certainly consider Flat water's for future events.

Flatwater was my 1st choice to have my wedding reception and I had called to get more information. After playing phone tag, I got a hold of the special events manager, Rakesh. His attitude was snide and arrogant, any questions I had he told me to refer to their events sales kit and quickly got off the phone with me. I emailed him twice with questions, left several voice messages, and called from a land line and had him pretend he couldn't hear me and hang up on me. Needless to say, I won't be choosing them as my venue. I tried to call and speak to the manager, but Flatwater's fantastic phone queue leads you to an "error" and you get hung up on. I finally had to call the reservations line and speak to a receptionist (LINDSAY) who also wasn't apolgetic when I relayed my story. I told her I had seeked Flatwater out to give them the business, no sorry, nothing, just asked me if I wanted to leave a message for the manager or if I wanted him to call me back. I'm 100% sure I WON'T be receiving a phone call from him. Such TRAGIC service for a beautiful venue. I don't think I've ever encountered such lack of customer service, and ignorance.

My father, husband and I went to Flatwater so enjoy the view and some tasty seafood. The view is truly wonderful: you are just above river level and can see tourboats pass by and watch as the city lights come on. The food, however, was awful: my salad nicoise came with uncooked potatos, a "Spring Roll" appetizer came doughy and underfried, my father's sea bass filet was the size of a premature guppie. Our soups tasted strongly of Campbell's and arrived lukewarm and 45 minutes after our order. There were no olives or bread to snack on in the meantime.

Our service was slow and indifferent. When I returned my salad with crunchy, raw potatos, it was taken away without any explanation (they did take it off the bill but no other accomodations were made).

The most awkward part of the evening was when the check arrived: our waitress discovered her friendly, chatty side and asked my father where he was from and if he was enjoying his trip. She forgot to wait around for the anser.

The worst part about the whole thing is that the food is fantastically expensive (~$30/entree). Ugh, what a waste of money.

Flatwater gets credit for being the first place to disappoint so thoroughly as to warrant an actual negative review. This place was bad from entrance to exit... Attempted to dine there last night with my boyfriend. We were met by incompetent, vapid hostesses and told there would be a 45 minute wait to be seated outside. No problem. We head to the bar for a drink where we were greeted by a less than hospitable bartender who somehow managed to screw up a gin and tonic. We watched 3 tables pay up and leave and no one was ever seated at them. We asked the hostess about this and she said it would be a few more minutes. We finally just walked out, past the hostesses, without so much as an apology, thank you or even a glance in our general direction. Never, and I mean, NEVER have I seen such a complete disregard for the customer. It was appalling beyond description. What a shame that such a lovely location is completely ruined by an incompetent, apathetic group of employees. Flatwater left quite the bad taste in my mouth - and I never even had a chance to eat the food...

This is the worst service I've ever gotten!! I've never written a review before, but I felt compelled to warn others. The location is beautiful, so I was very excited to come to this place. Unfortunately, the service was slow and the workers were downright insulting. After asking to speak with the manager, we realized the rudeness goes all the way to the top. I hope that if you want to be treated well, you'll never return to this place!! It is very sad that a beautiful location like this is being managed by such incompetent people.

There are many fine restaurants in Chicago..unfortunately this isn't one of them. This restaurant pretends to be fine dining yet falls short. The only thing going for it is the view which is magnificant. It is a beautiful spot on the river with a sweeping view of the Chicago cityscape.

The food is ordinary for a restaurant in this price range, they only stock a handful of overpriced wines. Our first bottle of red was so warm, that it must have been cellared near the stove. I could only think that all of the other reviews were submitted by owner or staff. The waitsatff were amatuerish. Avoid at all costs.

i truly thank the staff for helping pull off the best party ever.............the food is still being raved about, and the location is beautiful. I would highly recommend Flatwater for any occasion. Totally a funky, fun atmosphere.
I only wished to have had our party in the summer...............to have had the chance to enjoy the outside terrace. Maybe in the future we can do that.
thanks again for making our night special.

Flatwater has got the best locatio for an outdoor restaurant in the city. With the recent warm spell, I had a chance to dine at Flatwater. I could not believe that there are not more restaurants on the River. It is such an amazing feeling to sit in the middle of downtown right on the water. The menu is very inspired. It seems to take you on a world tour without leaving your seat. I truly enjoyed the Spicy Tina Poke Roll. It reminds me of an appetizer I had at Bond Street in NYC. The service was nice, but a little slow. I do not think that they were prepared for the massive amount of people that wanted to take in the unseasonable warm weather (80 degrees in March!!!). I really cannot wait til Summer. I think that I may be a fixture at Flatwater. Now I just need to work on getting a boat, so that I can pull up to Flatwater in style.

Pros: Views, Atmosphere, Menu

Cons: Slow Service, Small Champagne List, Not Much Street Parking (But $5 Valet!)

It's amazing how these guys screwed up almost everything from start to finish. My husband and I tried Flatwater on Valentine's Day since they were one of the only restaurants still available (that should've been our first clue.) Upon arriving at the valet, we sat in our car for what seemed like 10 minutes before calling the restaurant to ask why there was no valet outside. We were told it was really busy and the ONE valet was running cars. There were TWO other couples in the entire restaurant!! This is busy to them? We shook it off & hoped for a good meal. We were given a Prix Fixe menu that looked somewhat promising. They did have a good wine, but our TOTALLY incompetent server didn't know how to open, serve, or pour the wine. When he brought out each course it was just slammed in front of us with no description or attention. The courses that were listed on the menu were not exactly what we ate, and the only thing that was slightly enjoyable was the main course of chateaubriand... just ok.
It was about 4 degrees that night and for some reason they decided to leave doors wide open and constantly adjust the temp in an already freezing room. When the manager would turn up the heat, a server would come by and turn it down. I was freezing most of the time. After our sub-par meal, we took the rest of our wine and moved to a couch near the fireplace hoping to defrost. The couches were so shabby I was afraid to sit on them. Missing buttons and exposed metal on the seats? Come on! The room has so much potential, but the apathy from the waitstaff to the managemnet is depressing. The waiter seemed afraid to talk to anyone (even about the food) and the only other patrons in the bar were loud, swearing, obnoxious drunks that the bartender was happy to do shots with all night. I was totally uncomfortable in the place. When we wanted to leave it took the inept valet 20 minutes to get the car! We couldn't wait to get the hell out of that place. TERRIBLE!

Pros: Not many. Clean bathroom, I guess.

Cons: Service, food, valet... you name it.

Flatwater was great from start to finish. The location is absolutely amazing. Right on the Chicago river surrounded by some amazing Chicago architecture. The menu was quite eclectic with no theme that I could detect. It seemed to have a very global influence. Our server was very knowledgeable on the wines and helped us pair some real great wines with our dinner. We were entertaining some of out friends from out of town and I would recommend it to anyone doing the same. Great dining experience in an amazing Chicago location.

My friends and I made reservations to have dinner here on New Years Eve. When I called to make the reservation, the host indicated there was limited seating with the regular menu, but he said they still had space in the section dining with the regular menu that night. When we arrived, at 8:30pm on New Years Eve, our host gave us the prix fix menu. After sitting at our table for 10 minutes, a waiter arrived and we said that we wanted to use the regular menu. He said this was not possible and we told him that we had been told otherwise when we made our reservation. He then sent the manager over who said that he had all of the hosts call the people that had made reservations that night to tell them they couldn?t use the regular menu. Funny I didn?t get a call. This manager was incompetent --not only were his employees taking reservations for a menu that wasn?t even being served, but he also offered us NOTHING to compensate for the fact that he had wasted our time and money to get to his worthless restaurant. And at 9pm on New Years Eve, we had no choice but to pay $95 in his establishment or go hungry. We chose hungry. I'd rather flush my $95 down the toilet than help this place stay in business. I?ll never go back to this horrendous establishment. Based on prior reviews, I see I?m not the only one that feels this way.

Cons: Horrible Service

This restaurant was really a disappointment. We ordered a $9 glass of wine and got about 1/8 of a glass. The entrees were $29 each and were very small portions, probably worth about $15. We did not get any bread with the meal either. We spent $90 including tip and left hungry. I felt really cheated. The prior restaurant in this location was a much better value. What a rip-off!

This new restaurant has got an awesome menu. We had a party of 6 and everyone in our party now has a new favorite dish. All of the appetizers and entrees had such amazing detail to the flavors. What I liked most was the variety of options on the menu. The wine list leaves a little to be desired; however there are a lot of very reasonably priced bottles. I just did not see a lot of big names on the list. Our service was also great. Very attentive and knowledgeable about the food. Not so knowledgeable about the wines, but he did bring over the manager who was able to help us select a nice wine. I can?t wait to go back and try more items on the menu. I would recommend trying to snag a section in the lounge near the fireplace for appetizers and drinks before dinner.

Food is medicore and the service is horrible. I have been here for lunch and dinner and both were bad. During the summer it is really nice outside to sit on the river though.

What a weird setup. It was recommended by the concierge at the W hotel, so I presumed it would be at least half-decent. Wrong! And rather annoyed that I wasted my only night in Chicago at this strange place. Plus points: Food quite good, although the salmon smelt far too fishy to be fresh, nice washrooms! Minus points: Unprofessional staff (felt like I was intruding on their private party!), bizarre wine list (written on a scrap of paper, no house wines, no bottles of white wine, choice of 3 reds starting at $70!), seated away from the window despite tables with a good view being free, mains took forever to arrive, check brought before we'd finished eating, asked them to call a cab and was told just to hail one on the street (it was late, dark, rainy, and cold), no atmosphere. You'd expect this in a bar, not a restaurant charging $70 a head! Perhaps okay for a company function but definitely not if you're looking for a pleasant meal out with friends in somewhere with a good atmosphere. Perhaps that's why it was practically empty, apart from the numerous staff standing around smoking, chatting, and drinking!

I first want to thank all of the staff at Flatwater for helping me host such a wonderful corporate event. I planned our Company's Annual Dinner here and could not have been more pleased. After the twentieth positive comment I received in feedback after the event, I decided that I should post this review. Not only is the view amazing, but our service was prompt and the food was great. The event coordinator was extremely helpful and made sure that every last detail was attended to. I will definitely recommend Flatwater to anyone looking for a new and unique venue for an event.

The ambience at Flatwater is really relaxing. The food is average. The service is "TERRIBLE". They have a lot of people working there and walking around, but not serving the customers. There is no reason to wait 20 minutes for a drink when it's not crowded. Ask for water during your meal and you'll die of thirst. Bartenders always seem to be setting up. Maybe the ignoring of the customers is the "In" thing to do.

My boyfriend and I dined at Flatwater last Saturday night. I must say set up is phenomenal and the view from the patio is amazing. However, nothing else was remotely on par. The tomato mozzarella salad was awful, I could find fresher tomoatoes at Jewel. After waiting 30 minutes for a drink my waiter took my wine away when it was half full. The boats that pull up had people hanging around - leaning on our table and the staff didn't seem to care if it interfered with our meal. As our final sign-off our waiter asked us to "hurry up and sign our bill" when my boyfriend and I were having a relaxing dinner and didn't want to be rushed out of anywhere.

Too bad the service here is so horrible because it's a great space. Three bartenders all loading beer into the fridge and I sat there for five minutes before any of them even bothered to look up and see people waiting for drinks - and it wasn't even busy. We then decided to sit at a table where we were immediately kicked out of because the host told us they were setting up for reservations - 45 mins later there's still 7 tables open and no one sitting in them. Hugely disappointed and I will not be back.

I work in the ABA building just above this place. I really looked forward to a new restaurant finally opening up nearby, but was unfortunately disappointed with this place. The service was slow, the food not well cooked, and the overall scene a little boring. There are a few other places on the water, Japonais, various steakhouses, and the W off Michigan that deliver in a much bigger way.

This place has the coolest bar I have seen. It has an indoor/outdoor bar that opens up to the river and you can see boats going by as you are sitting at the bar. The whole vibe is very European. The food was very tasty. The mini burgers are a must. We were there for after work drinks and the place was pretty busy. I think next time I might try having a full dinner on the patio.
