My partner is Guatemalen so we both were recommended to this spot a few years ago. I have to admit that I have gone to quite a few restaurants who "claim" authenticcity, but Tinajon is the real deal. They have a wide selection of true

i never had guatemalan food before- it reminded me of a mix between cuban and mexican. regardless, it was delicious and the portions were large. excellent margaritas, too. only drawback: we had an entertainment book coupon to get one meal

If you've never had Guatemalan food, check out El Tinajon in Roscoe Village. It's like Mexican food, with more flavor and soul. The menu is full of spicy and flavorful traditional meat and bean dishes as well as chicken and some vegetarian entrees. The prices are reasonable, maybe a little high. The restaurant is small but the service is great. They also offer a weekend brunch to sample Guatemalan breakfasts, with eggs and bean dishes. This is an above-average restaurant that offers good food and a very casual environment.
